Fashion Masterclass. Defining design of the 20th and 21st centuries

From Azzedine Alaïa, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Coco Chanel to Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vivienne Westwood, a century’s worth of fashion greats from the permanent collection of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City are celebrated in this fresh edition of Fashion Designers A–Z.

Formerly available as a limited Collector’s Edition only, this accessibly priced and updated new edition features photographs of over 500 garments selected from the Museum’s permanent collection. From an exquisitely embroidered velvet evening gown to Mondrian-style minimalist chic, each chosen piece is chosen not only for its beauty but for its representative value, distilling the unique philosophy and aesthetics of each of the featured designers.

Texts by the museum’s curators explain why each designer is important in fashion history and what is special about the chosen garments. In her introductory essay, director and chief curator Valerie Steele writes about the rise of the fashion museum and the emergence of the fashion exhibition as a popular and controversial phenomenon. Together with a foreword by Suzy Menkes, Steele’s writings also provide a history of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the world of fashion scholarship and museology.

Author Diane Keaton, Foreword by Ralph Lauren
ID: 18294
Издательство: Rizzoli

A fashion icon in her own right, Keaton amusingly revisits and reflects on some of her favorite and not-so-favorite fashion moments over the decades, from childhood homemade outfits to red carpet ensembles and street style experiments she tried from the 1960s until today.

Since she could remember, Keaton has been fascinated by clothing and style. As a little girl, she would pick out patterns and request that her mother make her custom outfits. This was the beginning of a love affair with clothes and looks, and sometimes, fashion. From the outset of her acting career in the 1970s, the legendary star has experimented and thought outside the lines of what a Hollywood icon should wear and still became lauded as a style icon by VogueWThe Hollywood Reporter, and countless fashion websites. Keaton’s style is at once timeless, experimental, bold, effortless, androgynous, quirky, and utterly and distinctly her own.

This is the celebrated film star’s ode to her unforgettable fashion moments examined through Keaton’s self-deprecating, charming voice, as she comments on her favorite looks and her biggest fashion faux pas. Images includes photos of a young Keaton sporting her mother’s homemade ensembles, stylish snapshots from the 1960s and iconic 1970s looks highlighting her signature Annie Hall style, red carpet moments, magazine editorials, street-style shots, and selfies from the 1980s until present day. Striking fashion photographs by renowned photographers such as Annie Leibovitz, Ruven Afanador, and Ron Gallela are accompanied by anecdotes about Keaton’s inspiring style from her longtime friends, collaborators, and fashion designers, including Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kris Jenner, Nancy Myers, Blake Lively, and Thom Browne. Truly entertaining and stylish, this is the book fashion lovers and fans of the inimitable actor have been waiting for.

About the Authors:

Diane Keaton is an Oscar-winning actress, director, and author whose books with Rizzoli include California RomanticaHouseThe House That Pinterest Built, and SavedRalph Lauren is an American fashion designer, philanthropist, businessman, and four-time CFDA winner.

The groundbreaking images created in London’s celebrated commercial darkroom tell the fascinating story of one of the most productive, experimental, and colourful eras in fashion photography.

For more than 30 years, Brian Dowling’s studio was the birthplace of some of the most remarkable fashion photography ever created. In his Islington darkroom, using specialist analog equipment, Dowling shepherded amazing images from negative to paper captured by the likes of Anton Corbijn, Glen Luchford, and Nick Knight. Dowling’s BDI studio was also responsible for a number of technical innovations in colour photography, paving the way for many of today’s digital effects.

This tribute to Dowling includes extensive interviews, commentary, testimonials from his clients, and numerous examples of iconic haute couture photographs that passed through his hands. In addition, a series of photographs specially commissioned for this volume demonstrate Dowling’s groundbreaking techniques: cross-processing, masking, filtering, layering light, and colour fades.
Dowling’s hands-on achievements and alchemic talents are showcased in this beautiful ode to fashion photography.

Fashion writing now enjoys its highest-ever profile as the digital world has multiplied the number of platforms on which it is available. No longer confined to restrictive print schedules or occasional broadcast slots, fashion has become an ever-present content driver. With retailers, brands and designers all in on the act, plus citizen fashion coverage from the social media community, the volume of fashion content has risen beyond any predictions.

While influencers monetise their musings - indeed, create successful and influential fashion media and fashion product businesses - traditional magazines and newspapers have expanded their multi-channel fashion content in order to secure more touch points with consumers.

Aimed at students on journalism, content creation, media and publishing courses this guide will also appeal to untrained writers who want to develop a more professional approach to their fashion writing.

About the Author:

Josephine Collins is the course leader for BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism and Content Creation and senior lecturer in print and online journalism at London College of Fashion. She has extensive experience as an editor and writer across business and consumer magazines, newspapers and online.

The relationship between art, nature and fashion in the creations of the Venezuelan designer that conquered public and critics around the world.

Fashion and art have always had intimate and fruitful relations, accompanying social change and, in particular, the role of women in the world.

Oscar Carvallo is a fashion designer who challenges things with his original and amusing contents and who, among his numerous artistic collaborations, is associated with Carlos Cruz-Diez, a key Op art artist and colour theorist, to elaborate new collections.

This extraordinary encounter has given life to creations titled “Kinetic Journey”. Silhouettes and colours occupy space-time, accompany the fluid motion of silks and satins or sculpt bodies in an intermingling of colours that make the senses vibrate and deceive the gaze.

Carvallo’s passion for art is linked to his love of nature, pursued with true dedication. Born in Caracas, near the sea and lush landscapes, the designer extols the silhouettes of women that become, each time, women-flowers, women-feathers, women-fish... His vision of the world is reflected in his collections “Save Our Soul”, “Caribbean Sea” or “Neptune”; he reveals the anxiety of being in “Melancholy” or “Eagle Eye”; he questions the passing of time that withers and decays things and living beings. Carvallo tries to fight this decay – with artists, designers, craftsmen – and to build beauty – freeing it, displaying it. This incredible creative inclination sublimes nature that can renew itself and which must be safeguarded.
