Edith Holden
ID: 16012
Издательство: Rizzoli

A charming addition to Rizzoli’s carefully curated program of bringing classic books back into print.

This beautifully packaged facsimile of Edith Holden’s original diary is filled with a naturalist’s masterful paintings and delightful observations chronicling the English countryside throughout 1906. As one of the few true records of the time in print, the handwritten thoughts and paintings contained in The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady transport readers to a more refined, romantic, and simpler time.

Capitalizing on the current Downton Abbey–inspired appetite for Edwardian-era ephemera, fashions, and society, this reproduction brings readers back to a time in which propriety, civility, and an appreciation for the natural world reigned. This souvenir of a bygone era serves not only as a calming touchstone, but a reminder that as long as we choose to see it, we are still surrounded by beauty and grace. Presented to retain the charm and beauty of the original volume filled with Holden’s hand-drawn illustrations of the English countryside’s flora and fauna through the changing seasons of the year, as well as handwritten notes, observations, and quotations, The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady makes a lovely addition to any home’s library or side table.

About the Author:

Edith Holden (1871–1920) was born at Kings Norton, Birmingham, one of seven children of a Midlands paint manufacturer. The family lived in the small village of Olton in Warwickshire and it was there that she wrote and illustrated the book. After attending art school, she worked as an illustrator, with her drawings being published in several books.

Adam Rowe

Издательство: Abrams

Worlds Beyond Time is the definitive visual history of the spaceships, alien landscapes, cryptozoology, and imagined industrial machinery of 1970s paperback sci-fi art and the artists who created these extraordinary images.

This collectible volume is a loving tribute to a unique and robust art form whose legacy lives on, both in nostalgic appreciation as well as the retro-chic design of mainstream sci-fi films such as Guardians of the GalaxyAlien: Covenant, and Thor: Ragnarok.

In the 1970s, mass-produced, cheaply printed science-fiction novels were thriving. The paper was rough, the titles outrageous, and the cover art astounding.

Over the course of the decade, a stable of talented painters, comic-book artists, and designers produced thousands of the most eye-catching book covers to ever grace bookstore shelves (or spinner racks). The pieces commissioned for these covers often had very little to do with the contents of the books they were selling, but by leaning heavily on psychedelic imagery, far-out landscapes, and trippy surrealism, the art was able to satisfy the same space race–fueled appetite for the big ideas and brave new worlds that sci-fi writers were boldly pushing forward.

In Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s, Adam Rowe — who has been curating, championing, and resurrecting the best and most obscure art that 1970s sci-fi has to offer on his blog 70s Sci-Fi Art—introduces readers to the biggest names in the genre, including Chris Foss, Peter Elson, Tim White, Jack Gaughan, and Virgil Finlay, as well as their influences.

Packed with gorgeously reproduced art, this book also includes deep dives into the subject matter that commonly appeared on these covers—spaceships, alien landscapes, fantasy realms, cryptozoology, and heavy machinery.

About the Author:

Adam Rowe is a senior writer at Tech.co and a Forbes contributor on publishing and the business of storytelling. He has also written for iO9, Popular Mechanics, Tor.com and the Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog. In 2018, he was a Digital Book World Award nominee for Publishing Commentator of the Year. Rowe curates the popular, multi-platform 70s Sci-Fi Art feed, bringing the best in retro sci-fi art to over 100,000 Instagram followers @70sscifi. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

Felix Scheinberger

Издательство: Hoaki

This book is not only about illustration, though it does contain illustrations — lots of them. But there’s more. This book examines the profession of illustrator, from the vexing subject of money to the question of the right workplace.

How do you get commissions? How do you negotiate successfully? What’s a fair price? How do you handle the everyday routines involved in illustration work?

It explains concepts such as usage rights, collecting societies and social security insurance for artists. And, of course, it presents a wide variety of illustration techniques. In short, it makes an effort to enlighten, be useful and answer as many questions as possible. Its author does so, on the one hand, by offering more than twenty really useful tips for budding illustrators — for example, how to stop the fear that a blank page often inspires — and, on the other, by presenting the twenty-five most important illustration techniques in a practical way that awakens the reader’s desire to learn more. As a parallel narrative accompanying the humorous texts, there are images by very different illustrators who work with a wide variety of techniques and styles.

These pictures are diverse yet easy to compare, because they all show the same thing: a bird.

About the Author:

Felix Scheinberger, born in Frankfurt in 1969, is one of the most innovative illustrators of the young generation.

Marta McDowell, Janet Stiles Tyson
ID: 17932
Издательство: Abbeville Press

A complete edition of the first herbal published by a woman artist — which has a remarkable backstory.

In the 1730s, Elizabeth Blackwell (1699–c. 1758) found herself penniless, with her ne’er-do-well husband confined to a London debtor’s prison. A talented artist, she came up with a unique and ambitious moneymaking scheme: the publication of a new illustrated guide to medicinal plants, including many New World species not depicted in earlier books. Blackwell’s Curious Herbal, published between 1737 and 1739, was hailed for its usefulness to doctors and apothecaries and met with considerable financial success.
This magnificent volume — the first modern edition of Blackwell’s herbal — reproduces all 500 of her exquisite plates. Blackwell not only made the drawings, but prepared the copper plates and personally hand-coloured them. Her handwritten descriptions of the plants, which she creatively adapted (with permission) from Joseph Miller’s Botanicum Officinale, retain considerable interest. This book features a previously unknown preface by Blackwell, in which she reveals her passion for art and nature, and her vision for the herbal. Two introductory texts contextualise Blackwell’s achievement: the noted garden writer Marta McDowell explores the history of herbals as a genre, and the state of botanical knowledge in Blackwell’s time; and the historian Janet Stiles Tyson relates the artist’s rather extraordinary biography.

A Curious Herbal will be essential for all lovers of botanical art, and for anyone interested in women’s history and the history of science.

About the Authors:

Marta McDowell teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden. She has authored several books, including Unearthing “The Secret Garden” and All the Presidents’ Gardens. Janet Stiles Tyson, an independent scholar, wrote her doctoral dissertation on Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herb

Soviet propaganda against the demon drink: the latest in Fuel's Russian pop culture series

From the acclaimed authors of the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedias and Soviet Space Dogs comes Alcohol, a glorious and exhaustive collection of previously unpublished Soviet anti-alcohol posters. The book includes examples from the 1960s through to the 1980s but focuses on posters produced during Mikhail Gorbachev's campaign initiated in 1985. These posters attempted to sober up Soviet citizens by forcing them to confront the issues associated with excessive alcohol consumption. This government-led urgency allowed the poster designers to present the anti-alcohol message in the most graphic terms: they depicted drunks literally trapped inside the bottle or being strangled by "the green snake." Their protagonists are paralytic freeloaders and shirkers who always neglect their families, drive under the influence, produce substandard work, are smashed when pregnant and present a constant danger to fellow citizens.

A two-part essay by renowned cultural historian Alexei Plutser-Sarno attempts to explain, from a Russian perspective, the reasons behind this phenomenon.

Since the first dissections of corpses, anatomy and art have always been connected.

From Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings to Francis Bacon’s naked figures, artists have always been interested in the representation of the human as a biological being. Today, anatomy is back in vogue in contemporary art following the rebirth of gothic and horror in the entertainment industry.

This book features a celebration of anatomy, flesh, and bone by more than 60 contemporary international artists and celebrities including Damien Hirst, Mark Ryden, Jason Freeny, and Nychos.

About the Author:

Blending pop cultural themes with art techniques reminiscent of the Old Masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, and his work is part of the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Amanda Erlanson is a writer, art collector, and editor of the art blog "Erratic Phenomena."

This 240-page book, Aubrey Beardsley: The Decadent Magician of the Light and the Darkness, reveals the core of the artist Aubrey Beardsley through more than 180 of his artworks, compiled under the supervision of Hiroshi Unno, a critic and a writer who has contributed to many books on the fin-de-siècle.

Aubrey Beardsley was an illustrator who was best known for his drawings in black ink filled with erotic and decadent features. He was born in Brighton, England on August 21, 1872. The Victorian era in which Aubrey lived was gripped by a strict, rigid, conservative morality. The society was male-dominated and forced women to be modest. However, in Brighton, which developed into a seaside resort for the upper classes full of entertainment, people were relieved from such strictness. Brighton was also a breeding ground of a sense of liberty in all things, and sexuality was no exception. In other words, it can be said that the Victorian era was a chaotic era during which open-minded thoughts on sexuality and strict, male-dominated morality coexist. Aubrey's mother, Ellen, was a person who embodied that Brighton atmosphere. Although she worried about raising her son in such an environment, she also taught literature and music to Aubrey. It was lucky for him to spend his youth with Ellen, and Brighton definitely became the basis of his talent for grasping the oddness of society in this era. Aubrey moved to London when he was 15 years old. When the Beardsley family left Brighton, Aubrey lost the feeling of liberty he had been raised with, but at the same time was able to develop his talent by interacting with Edward Burne-Jones, Oscar Wilde, and William Morris, the artists that coloured this period. Aubrey, whose talent blossomed in London, began to offer his illustrations to many literary and theatrical outlets.

The most famous examples are his illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome, Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Edgar Allan Poe, "Alibaba and the Forty Thieves" from One Thousand and One Nights, the French magazine Yellow Book, and the play Lysistrata. The illustrations for these literary and theatrical artworks had also been drawn by many other illustrators, but Aubrey's work was totally different from anyone else's. The seductive motifs that he drew, using only black ink, such as a woman with a fearless smile, a gentleman with disdainful contempt, and figures with extremely exaggerated genitals, all express Aubrey's incomparable talent for grasping the chaos and unsettled atmosphere of the period. The rebellious nature and imagery of his illustrations were often controversial. People even called him "the Devil's younger brother". But there is no doubt that he was a star of the age, which is evident from the many influential illustrators who came after him who were influenced by Aubrey's work, such as Harry Clarke, Alastair, John Austin, Kay Nielsen and George Barbier.

Unfortunately, Aubrey's genius illuminated the end of the nineteenth century, the era of fin-de-siècle decadence, only briefly before fading away, when his tragically short life ended after just twenty-five years. How did the rebellious, yet refined, monochrome artworks were drawn by "the Devil's younger brother" come about? Was his life simply the art itself? This book is a gem that presents the artwork that is most identified with "Beardsley" himself, revealing both the artist and the idea, through his life and his masterpieces.
