About the Author:

Yuval Etgar is a curator and art historian who specialises in the history and theory of collage and image appropriation. His curated and published work includes The Ends of Collage, an anthology of writings on the history and theory of this practice, as well as monographic projects dedicated to the work of Louise Nevelson, Jake Chapman, John Stezaker, Fischli & Weiss, and René Magritte, among others.

About the Author:

wataboku is a Japanese digital artist whose fanbase continues to expand all over the world in response to their works based on the original shojo schoolgirl icon, SAI, developed on social media. In 2016, wataboku's first art book, Kan 0, was published by Pony Canyon. Since then, in addition to exhibitions throughout Japan, the artist has held solo exhibitions in various cities, mainly in Asia. More recently, wataboku has been expanding their range of activities as a contemporary artist. Representative works include a collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto, a music video for "Mela!" by Ryokuoushoku Shakai (Ryokushaka), and book design for 12 Suicidal Teens (Bunshun Bunko). The name "wataboku" comes from the Japanese words for "I" "watashi" and "boku."

About the Author:

Nicholas D. Lowry is president and principal auctioneer of Swann Auction Galleries in New York City, and director of the auction house’s vintage posters department. Born into a family of antiquarian book dealers, he was raised and educated in New York, and graduated from Cornell University. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on vintage posters, Lowry has spent over 20 years serving as poster appraiser on the popular PBS television series Antiques Roadshow. In addition to his auction house work, Lowry is also a collector of posters himself, and an author: he has curated two exhibitions on the history of Czech posters (at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, in Des Moines, Iowa, 2016-17, and the Dutch Poster Museum in Hoorn, Netherlands, in 2013). He has written numerous articles on collecting and the history of posters for diverse publications and has appeared as himself in the 2019 documentary about the antiquarian book trade, The Booksellers. He sits on the board of governors of the National Arts Club in New York City.

The definitive book on the life and career of internationally acclaimed artist Yoshitomo Nara

Yoshitomo Nara rose to prominence in the mid-1990s, a star in a generation of avant-garde Japanese artists associated with the neo-Pop ‘Superflat' movement. This book, made in close collaboration with Nara himself, explores more than three decades of his work - and is the first truly authoritative monograph on the artist in more than a decade. How do you get commissions? How do you negotiate successfully? What’s a fair price? How do you handle the everyday routines involved in illustration work?

It explains concepts such as usage rights, collecting societies and social security insurance for artists. And, of course, it presents a wide variety of illustration techniques. In short, it makes an effort to enlighten, be useful and answer as many questions as possible. Its author does so, on the one hand, by offering more than twenty really useful tips for budding illustrators — for example, how to stop the fear that a blank page often inspires — and, on the other, by presenting the twenty-five most important illustration techniques in a practical way that awakens the reader’s desire to learn more. Felix Scheinberger, born in Frankfurt in 1969, is one of the most innovative illustrators of the young generation.

A complete edition of the first herbal published by a woman artist — which has a remarkable backstory.

In the 1730s, Elizabeth Blackwell (1699–c. 1758) found herself penniless, with her ne’er-do-well husband confined to a London debtor’s prison. A talented artist, she came up with a unique and ambitious moneymaking scheme: the publication of a new illustrated guide to medicinal plants, including many New World species not depicted in earlier books. Blackwell’s Curious Herbal, published between 1737 and 1739, was hailed for its usefulness to doctors and apothecaries and met with considerable financial success.
This magnificent volume — the first modern edition of Blackwell’s herbal — reproduces all 500 of her exquisite plates. Blackwell not only made the drawings, but prepared the copper plates and personally hand-coloured them. Her handwritten descriptions of the plants, which she creatively adapted (with permission) from Joseph Miller’s Botanicum Officinale, retain considerable interest. This book features a previously unknown preface by Blackwell, in which she reveals her passion for art and nature, and her vision for the herbal. Two introductory texts contextualise Blackwell’s achievement: the noted garden writer Marta McDowell explores the history of herbals as a genre, and the state of botanical knowledge in Blackwell’s time; and the historian Janet Stiles Tyson relates the artist’s rather extraordinary biography.

A Curious Herbal will be essential for all lovers of botanical art, and for anyone interested in women’s history and the history of science.
