The golden era of industrial design that revolutionized home appliances.

The fascinating world of product design that emerged between the 1960s and 1980s symbolized the birth of a new age in human behavior. From coffee grinders to electric knives to blow-dryers, each home appliance was intended to help in the daily household routines — but they were also masterpieces of style.

Based on Jaro Gielens’s collection, Soft Electronics explores a nostalgic and unique set of products from a very distinct period in design. Each object possesses a sense of longevity, quality, and innovation that has been hard to match since planned obsolescence redefined our relationship with consumer goods. Soft Electronics pays homage to an iconic era of product design.

About the Author:

Jaro Gielens is a Dutch collector of vintage consumer electronics and electronic games. His collection includes more than 1,200 boxed small household appliances. As an online designer, he has created and designed online ads and websites on a daily basis for the past 25 years. His first book with gestalten, Electronic Plastic, explored handheld and tabletop devices from the 1970s and '80s.

Target, Foreword by Kim Hastreiter
ID: 16244
Издательство: Rizzoli

Target sparked the democratization of design two decades ago, as the first retailer to forge partnerships with well-known and emerging designers to offer high style without the high price tag.

This idea altered the fashion and style landscape forever -- and became a retail game changer. Now readers can discover the inside story from those who were there -- the designers, photographers, creators, superfans, and, of course, the Target guests.

For 20 years, Target's design partnerships have made a mark on culture at large, with the retailer's brand promise of "Expect More. Pay Less." embracing the belief that design should be accessible, too. At the center of Design for All are the designers -- offering exclusive collections in stores or at another Target first, the pop-up shop. From Michael Graves to Isaac Mizrahi, John Paul Gaultier to Philippe Starck, Jason Wu, Alexander McQueen, Gwen Stefani and more, Target has collaborated with more than 180 designers throughout the past two decades. And this book covers it all with new glimpses behind some of the most iconic collections including Missoni, Stephen Sprouse, and Lily Pulitzer.

Target: 20 Years of Design for All is the definitive tale of Target's impact on culture and retail with page after page recounting every one of those memorable years. Through beautiful photographs, advertising stills, sketches, and interviews with designers, influencers and Target insiders, this book offers everything readers love about Target. It's chic and approachable. Stylish and inclusive. With surprises around every corner.

About the Authors:

Target, considered a leader in design, is one of the largest retailers in the United States with more than 1,800 stores across the country. Kim Hastreiter cofounded Paper, an independent pop-culture magazine, which she coedited for thirty-three years.

A one-stop resource providing comprehensive information about all the 'design' material types and new technology developments

Today’s designers are often presented with a seemingly infinite number of creative choices, with the ability to push their materials to the limits of what they can do. Understanding these materials properly helps designers make inspired decisions in a practical and confident manner. The Materials Sourcebook for Design Professionals is the one-stop resource for all design professionals, providing comprehensive, accurate information about the basic materials with which they work on a daily basis, as well as a complete breakdown on new and exciting developments in high-tech materials.

Written by Rob Thompson, The Materials Sourcebook for Design Professionals comprises six main parts on all the major ‘design’ material groups. These parts are then separated further into chapters that examine the properties of individual types of materials, e.g. ‘Iron’, ‘Steel’ and ‘Aluminium’. In total, there are nearly 100 material types featured, each one supported by examples of how it can be used in a variety of industries, an outline of its most desirable properties and details on its form and texture. With 450 vibrant illustrations and a clear layout, the design professional or student is presented with a long-term reference tool that tells them everything they need to know about the materials they use habitually, with information delivered in a wholly unbiased and accessible manner.

Tord Boontje
ID: 16533
Издательство: Rizzoli

This highly anticipated follow-up volume presents the exquisite designs of Tord Boontje, one of the most creative and romantic industrial designers working today.

Tord Boontje: Enchanted World is a comprehensive visual document of the designer’s most recent work. As an artist and a craftsman, Boontje incorporates an artisanal sensibility into contemporary industrial design, drawing upon a rich graphic tradition to create objects of exceptional beauty and delicacy.

Featured here are some of his latest works, many undertaken after Boontje stepped down as Head of Design Products at the Royal College of Art in 2013 (a position he assumed after Ron Arad in 2009). Now, solely focused on his own design studio in London, Boontje showcases many of his designs, including the wispy Icarus Lamp, an armoire constructed entirely of pressed-metal fig “leaves” for Meta, a portable Bluetooth speaker for Yamaha hidden under a curtain of horsehair, and many other romantic explorations that have made Boontje’s output stand out in the world of design. Combining developing technologies and traditional approaches, his pieces are prized for their originality, delicacy, and intricate detail. This book is a must for design lovers, providing readers with a window into how Boontje crafts his unique objects, from studio prototype to retail. Indeed, the book is conceived as a work of total design, using special printing effects and beautiful marginalia on almost every page in the form of Boontje’s sensitive and romantic detailed hand-drawn illustrations that have served as the inspiration for many of the objects featured here.

About the Author:

Tord Boontje is an award-winning industrial designer from the Netherlands. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in London and was Head of Design Products at the college from 2009–2013. He first came into public prominence with his work for Target.

Edited by Federica Sala, Foreword by Peter Marino
ID: 15860
Издательство: Rizzoli

On Venini’s 100th anniversary, this book celebrates the excellence of Italian high artistic glass craftsmanship and the vases that made history.

From Venice to the world, this special book recounts the prolific and original manufacture of Venini, the glass art company founded 100 years ago in Murano, Venice, by the visionary genius of Paolo Venini and Giacomo Cappellin. Over the course of a century, Venini has pursued the goal of innovation in keeping with tradition: the brand has transformed the ancient art of glassmaking by “intersecting” it with the modern visions of artists and designers. It has gained international fame and become the obsession of collectors all over the world. Venini objects are present in private collections, as well as museums and public institutions.

The book describes the evolution of Venini’s taste, style, and innovation, thanks to the images and stories of key designers and art directors, such as Paolo Venini, Carlo Scarpa, Gio Ponti, Gae Aulenti, Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Tadao Ando, and Ron Arad. The imagery includes about 150 illustrations: photos of glass, archive documents, original drawings, and a photoshoot carried out in the furnace itself. These images will allow readers to enter the beating heart of Venini craftsmanship and observe all the stages of glassmaking.

About the Author:

Federica Sala is an independent curator. She edited the book Minimal/Baroque on the Italian artist Gianluca Pacchioni and has authored various publications on the history of Italian design.

Foreword by George R. Kravis, II, Introduction by Penny Sparke
ID: 16260
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book on one of the leading collections of modern industrial design. A must-have for lovers of modernism, this is an accessible but authoritative introduction to the field. From the second industrial revolution to the start of the digital revolution, industrial design has played a major role in shaping society and the everyday objects used for living, working, and traveling. As factories transitioned from manufacturing machines for war to mass-produced goods, industrial design evolved to meet the needs of a quickly growing consumer economy. 100 Designs for a Modern World is a curated overview of the most influential pieces of modern industrial design from 1900 to the present day. George R. Kravis II has collected some of the most innovative and memorable products — including, for example, the Silver Streak glass iron — that contributed to this radical transformation of global culture. This book presents one hundred exceptionally designed objects: chairs, radios, irons, electric clocks, ceramic tableware, textiles, posters, and other graphic designs. The chronological organization generates a history of industrial design since the turn of the twentieth century. With an introduction by design historian Penny Sparke, this book is an authoritative reference on industrial design in the twentieth and early-twenty-first centuries. Meticulously selected and beautifully photographed, this elegant book is both an informative guide and a source of inspiration for collectors and enthusiasts of modern industrial design.

About the Author:

George R. Kravis II, a collector and philanthropist who has cultivated one of the preeminent collections of industrial design, established the Kravis Design Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2013. Penny Sparke is a professor in the School of Design and Art History at Kingston University London.

Things, objects, stuff, trinkets, tools, materials, gadgets, the things we use, abuse, throw away, cherish, depend on: these are the things we own, simple objects for our everyday lives. They may or may not hold special meaning to us, but their importance, as objects of cultural identity, is unmistakable. Produced by COLORS under the direction of Oliviero Toscani, famous for his controversial Benetton campaigns, 1000 Extra/Ordinary Objects is a humorous and educational guide to stuff from all over the world. Discover the wonderful absurdity of a priest's portable mass-in-a-briefcase kit, or the stunning difference between flyswatters from Zimbabwe and South Korea. Ogle at the juxtaposition of neoprene surfing shoes and bullfighting slippers; have a gander at a package of emu cutlets and a can of blowfish soup. You'll see that what is ordinary halfway across the world (or perhaps for your neighbors across the street) may be totally foreign to you. In case you see something that you absolutely must have, check out the yellow pages section at the end of the book; here you can find out where to get it and even how much it costs, as well as lots of little tidbits of interesting information to make your journey complete. Next time you pick up your toothbrush or comb your hair, you may think twice about the things that you use every day - perhaps they're not so ordinary after all.
