Form Meets Function. The industrial designs that shape our lives

If you take even the slightest interest in the design of your toothbrush, the history behind your washing machine, or the evolution of the telephone, you’ll take an even greater interest in this completely updated edition of Industrial Design A–Z.

Tracing the evolution of industrial design from the Industrial Revolution to the present day, the book bursts with synergies of form and function that transform our daily experience. From cameras to kitchenware, Lego to Lamborghini, we meet the individual designers, the global businesses, and above all the genius products that become integrated into even the smallest details of our lives.

Alongside star designers like Marc Newson and Philippe Starck and major global brands like Braun and Apple, lesser-known and newcomer entries such as Brompton Bicycles and Enercon wind turbines attest to product design’s restless pace, as well as to today’s most pressing challenges and priorities to which it must turn its creative invention.

George R. Kravis II
ID: 12710
Издательство: Rizzoli

An ambitious new survey of industrial design from 1900 to the present day in the United States, Europe, and around the world, as told through selected objects from the George R. Kravis II Collection.

Destined to become a new classic in the design genre, this major work summarizes an enormous topic — the creation of everyday objects for mass production and consumption from 1900 to the present — and shows how these products have become both symbols of the modern age and harbingers of our future. It covers the work of the heroes of modern and post-modern design, from the early pioneers — Dreyfuss, Bel Geddes, and Eames — to the leaders in the field today, including Starck, Newson, and Ive.

More than 200 objects from the Kravis Design Center’s collection are highlighted as important exemplars of industrial design. A wide range of media is represented, including furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and plastics. New research by contributing scholars has uncovered illuminating details about each object that help tell a more complete story of design in the past 100 years.

Among the more than 400 photographs, which include a wealth of historical images and ephemera, are those of the objects taken especially for this book and seen as never before, in vibrant colour and precise detail. This concise new history introduces a whole new audience to the topic in a style that is at once educational and accessible.

About the Author

George R. Kravis II has amassed more than 4,000 industrial design objects in his collection at the Kravis Design Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Penny Sparke is Professor of Design History at Kingston University in London.

A major survey of the Japanese designers, artisans, manufacturers and technologies that have shaped the world of modern design

A dedication to craft and the finest production quality have been an integral part of culture and day-to-day life in Japan for centuries. For the Japanese, the concept of design is not limited to functionality or materiality, but wholly connected with ancient culture and rituals. In this sense, a chair is much more than what you sit on, a cup more than what you drink from: these objects are to be reflected upon, to be touched and cherished.

As mass manufacturing became widespread in the post-war period, fascinating cross-cultural exchanges began to take place between Japan and the West. These gave rise not only to timeless objects of great beauty and utility, but innovations in materials, form and technology. Far beyond the icons of Japanese design – the perfectly weighted Kikkoman soy sauce bottle, Yanagi’s butterfly stool, the Sony Walkman – the products and objects that have emerged from the country over the past seven decades, few of which have been widely exported, serve to delight and draw admiration. In recent years, a new generation of designers – Nendo, Yoshioka – have taken Japanese creativity into entirely new territory, reconceptualizing the very meaning of design.

No attempt has been made to present a complete overview of Japanese design, until now. Showcasing over eighty designers, hundreds of objects, and contributions from both Japanese and Western design experts, this volume will become the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.

Contents List:

Foreword by Maasaki Kanai • Introduction: The Craft of Japanese Design • The Design Titans • The Designers and Everyday Icons: Tables & Chairs • Essay by Naomi Pollock • Food & Drink • Essay by Makoto Shimazaki • On&Off • Essay by Shinji Hamada • Posters & Packaging • Warp & Weft • Essay by Matilda McQuaid • Lifestyle & Leisure • A–Z of Designers

About the Authors:

Naomi Pollock is an American architect who writes about Japanese design and architecture. Her work has appeared in numerous publications on both sides of the Pacific, including A+UDwellKinfolkWallpaper* and Architectural Record, for whom she is the Special International Correspondent. In addition, she is the author of several books, including Modern Japanese HouseMade in Japan: 100 New ProductsJutaku: Japanese Houses and Sou Fujimoto. Oki Sato, Geneviève Gallot
ID: 18525
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A large-format book that uncovers the secrets behind Nendo’s unique creative process

He named his firm ‘Nendo’, the Japanese word for modelling clay; he uses manga-like sketches to illustrate his design concepts; and he creates some of the most imaginative furniture in the world: he is Oki Sato, one of Japan’s most prolific designers. At any given moment, he has hundreds of projects in the works – architecture, interiors, furniture, tableware, and more. ‘There is nothing I would not design,’ says Sato.

Sato renders his designs with remarkable conceptual clarity. At the outset, he allows his imagination to run wild and then documents his idea with a simple black line drawing – be it a bathroom basin defined by a single, ceramic swirl or a pair of wooden chopsticks that twist together to become one. These 2D images are converted into minimal 3D shapes described with clean outlines and a largely monochrome palette. Like a traditional Japanese ink painting, which constructs an image with just a few brush strokes, Sato extracts the unnecessary and eliminates distraction.

Featuring Sato’s original sketches, full-scale product images and explanatory texts, nendo uncovers and unpicks the designer’s unique creative process, guiding the reader step-by-step through his innovative and playful world to reveal the secrets behind fifty of his inimitable works.

About the Author:

Oki Sato is founder of the multi-award-winning Japanese design firm Nendo. Geneviève Gallot is former director of the Institut national du patrimoine and of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs.

The life and legacy of eminent designer Peter Schreyer

Meet one of the most influential designers of our time — a book about heritage, creative vision, and leadership, and what design can do for the future. Roots and Wings explore the life and work of Peter Schreyer, one of the most influential car designers of our time. A Renaissance man with an eye for detail and foresight for innovation, he geared himself toward success. Responsible for the births of some of the most iconic cars ever, his industry experience with Volkswagen, Audi, Kia, and Hyundai brought instant classics to the road.

Schreyer embodies a conduit between the West and East — bridging his homeland’s history of automotive design with South Korea, a country that has experienced stratospheric growth on the world stage in just a few decades. Looking at the formative moments and pivotal artistic discoveries that shaped his creative mindset, Roots and Wings is the story of how a man helped two polarizing cultures merge to create something unique and left a mark on history, and the future, in the process.

Born in 1953 in Bad Reichenhall, Peter Schreyer grew up on his parents’ farm, developing a passion for flying and skeleton bob racing. From 1975-1979 he studied industrial design at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and began to work with Audi first as a student in 1978, subsequently earning an Audi scholarship to study transportation design at the Royal College of Art in London.

In 1980, Schreyer began working with Audi in exterior, interior, and conceptual design, before moving to the Volkswagen group‘s prestigious design studio in California in 1991. After becoming VW’s head of exterior design in 1993, he decided to return to Ingolstadt, shaping Audi’s design strategy as the Director of Design between 1994-2002. Having been part of the Volkswagen group for more than 25 years, Schreyer left his position as Head of Design of the VW group to become Chief Design Officer for Kia Motors in 2006. In 2013, seven years after his arrival in Korea, Schreyer stepped up from his role at Kia to become President of all Kia and Hyundai design centers worldwide and is now, as President & Head of Design Management of the Hyundai Motor Group, responsible for the company’s long-term design vision.

Schreyer has received numerous awards and prizes throughout his career, including an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in recognition of his contributions to automotive design, the “Design Team of the Year” award in 1999 for Audi as well as the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2002.

Michael Sheridan
ID: 18179
Издательство: Strandberg Publishing

Twenty-one portraits of objects from Danish Modernism that remain relevant to this day.

From 1940-80, a group of Danish architects and designers created a series of mass-produced objects that have the quality of archetypes: basic equipment for daily life reduced to their essential and timeless forms. Created at the intersection of craft tradition and industrial production, these items of furniture, lighting, cookware and tableware remain absolutely relevant and a number of them are still in production.

A decade in the making, Archetypes offers the reader illuminating and richly illustrated profiles of twenty-one extraordinary designs that are emblematic of Danish material culture: modest, ethical and sustainable. Chapters on each archetype include biographical information on the designer, their creative processes, and detailed descriptions of the objects.

About the Author:

New York-based architect Michael Sheridan is an internationally recognized scholar of modern Danish Architecture and design. His books on these subjects include Landmarks: The Modern House in Denmark and most recently Room 606: The SAS House and the Work of Arne Jacobsen.

Abel González Fernandez, Laura Mott, Andrew Satake Blauvelt
ID: 17334
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book, accompanying a traveling exhibition, dedicated to Cuban mid-century design anchored by an under-acknowledged collection of graphic design, prototypes, and furniture, much of which has never been exhibited outside the island or published.

Primarily focused on the post-revolutionary era of Cuba from the late 1950s through the 1970s, this volume brings together a prolific cohort of artists, designers, and architects that materialized the ideology of their time, and ultimately narrate the country’s arc from revolutionary promise to authoritarian retrenchment.

Design and architecture played an important role in shaping the country's identity and cultural expression during this time period. Consisting of nearly 100 works, including approximately 50 pieces of furniture, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue features seminal objects of functional design, architectural renderings, speculative prototypes for a “design for all” ethos, and key examples of art and graphic design that contributed to the zeitgeist of the era. The book also includes several examples by contemporary Cuban artists and designers who explore how this post-revolutionary aesthetic survives today.

About the Authors:

Abel González Fernández is a writer and curator based in New York. González Fernández has curated exhibitions in Havana, Berlin, Tokyo, and New York.

Laura Mott is chief curator of Cranbrook Art Museum. An accomplished curator and lecturer, Mott joined Cranbrook in 2013 and has curated and co-curated more than 20 projects for the museum.

Andrew Satake Blauvelt is a curator, historian, critic, designer, and educator whose practice spans the fields of art and culture. He is director of Cranbrook Art Museum, leading the institution’s transformation into a vibrant and diverse cultural destination and community partner.

Dieter Rams, Jo Klatt
ID: 18429
Издательство: Gestalten

The new edition of the benchmark work by Dieter Rams.

Few product designs have the staying power of creations by Dieter Rams. Almost everything produced by the most influential designer of the twentieth century is today considered a classic. This new and revised edition of Less but Better shows once again why Dieter Rams’s approach to design will be relevant for the foreseeable future.

Ideas of what can and must be achieved by good design are in a constant state of flux as a result of cultural and technological developments. Dieter Rams, however, came up with ten principles that advocate for a purist, almost imperceptible design. These principles are still considered timeless fundaments of design theory and practice today.

Less but Better does not set out to be a complete documentation of Dieter Rams’s body of work, nor does it claim to tell the full story of the company Braun. Rather the book explores the ideas, criteria, and methods behind Rams’s creations and reveals how a shifting culture of product manufacturing gave rise to universal design benchmarks. From his reflections on design ethics and values we can distill a clear paradigm for future design — because one principle has remained firm over the years: less is simply better.

About the Authors:

Dieter Rams, born in Wiesbaden in 1932, initially studied architecture. He is widely considered one of the most significant industrial designers of the twentieth century. In the more than 40 years that he spent working at the electrical appliance manufacturer Braun, Rams turned out a wealth of pioneering creations that continue to influence designers around the world today. He has also generated a new awareness of the social function of design in Germany.

Jo Klatt is an acknowledged connoisseur and collector of Braun products. For many years he worked at the magazine Design+Design and was the publisher of numerous works, including the first edition of Less but Better.
