Author Calvin Klein
ID: 15890
Издательство: Rizzoli

This book is published with three unique covers.  Customers will receive one of the covers at random when they purchase the book.

This magnificent survey is the first and only book that Klein has written and compiled himself and is illustrated with era-defining photographs by the most distinguished names in fashion photography, from Irving Penn and Richard Avedon to Bruce Weber, and Patrick Demarchelier — among others. In it, the world’s most iconic models like Christy Turlington and Kate Moss, are captured in images that would define their careers, and remain indelible to the consumer. Accompanied by private insights and behind-the-scenes stories that only he could tell, every image has been chosen by Calvin Klein to narrate his evolution as a designer — from couture to jeans, underwear, and fragrance — all categories in which he redefined what was chic and essential.

As an icon of minimalism, modernism, sexual provocation, and androgyny, Calvin Klein’s first book will find broad appeal with anyone interested in design, fashion, or photography. Few names in fashion are as recognizable as that of Calvin Klein.

This unique book presents a stunning archive of images that reveal his timeless influence as a designer. From founding the company in New York in 1968, he went on to change the face of fashion, bringing his visionary minimalism to the fore and defining looks for generations. Divided by theme, with characteristic simplicity and sophistication, each of the three sections in this volume looks at one singular element of Klein’s approach. In Provocative, we see the most controversial of his campaigns, from Brooke Shields’s infamous teenage portraits to the seductive photography of underwear collections. In Minimalist, we understand the simplicity, refinement, and elegance in every collection. And in the final section, we read in the designer’s own words the insights behind the campaigns and the secrets behind the successes.

About the Author:

Calvin Klein is an American fashion designer. He founded his own company in 1968 and went on to turn the label into one of the most recognizable and successful fashion brands in the world. This is his story told for the first time.

A monumental volume devoted to one of the world’s largest and most spectacular collections of Cézannes.

The Barnes Foundation’s holdings of works by the renowned Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) — sixty-one oils on canvas and eight works on paper — are among the most significant in the world. The Barnes Foundation was established in 1922 by scientist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a passionate supporter of European modernism. His virtually unrivaled collection, which can only be viewed at the Barnes Foundation, also includes exceptional paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and many others.

Beginning in 1912, Barnes acquired works by Cézanne from major Paris dealers such as Paul Durand-Ruel and soon ranked among the artist’s most prominent collectors. At the time, this expressed a pioneering taste that Barnes shared with only a small group of enthusiasts, even though Cézanne had been posthumously hailed as a father of modern art at the turn of the twentieth century. The foundation’s impressive holdings of Cézannes — never before published in a single study in their entirety — span every period of the artist’s career and include his largest rendition of The Card Players and one of the three versions of The Large Bathers, one of his signal testaments.

This lavishly illustrated landmark volume is both a work on Cézanne and his time, and an impetus for further study of an artist whose oeuvre is at once luminous, austere, challenging, and deeply confounding.

About the Author:

André Dombrowski is Frances Shapiro-Weitzenhoffer Associate Professor of 19th-Century European Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Nancy Ireson is Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions and Gund Family Chief Curator at the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia. Sylvie Patry is Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Collections at the Musée d’Orsay.

Ashley Hicks
ID: 17085
Издательство: Vendome Press

British designer David Hicks (1929–1998) wowed the English decorating world with his bold geometric prints, electrifying color combinations, and quirky mix of antique and contemporary furniture.

Thanks to his prodigious talents, his gift for publicity, and his connection to the royal family through his wife, Lady Pamela Mountbatten (cousin of Prince Philip), Hicks attracted an A-list clientele. For decades, Hicks documented every salient moment of his life in scrapbooks, amassing 24 volumes filled with press clippings, invitations, swatches of his signature textiles, sketches of interiors, magazine articles on his projects, and hundreds of photographs, mainly family snapshots but also his own photos of people like Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, and Andy Warhol. Many of the pages, now thumbed and foxed, are laid out in a collage style, and several are embellished with drawings and notes, revealing Hicks’s thoughts and sense of whimsy. Here, his son, Ashley Hicks, has chosen more than 325 of the best pages — providing not just a window into the extraordinary world of David Hicks but also a fascinating time capsule.

About the Author:

Ashley Hicks, an architect and interior designer, is the author of two books on his father. Since 2003 he has produced a line of fabrics, carpets, and wallpaper called David Hicks by Ashley Hicks.

Dieter Rams, Jo Klatt

The new edition of the benchmark work by Dieter Rams.

Few product designs have the staying power of creations by Dieter Rams. Almost everything produced by the most influential designer of the twentieth century is today considered a classic. This new and revised edition of Less but Better shows once again why Dieter Rams’s approach to design will be relevant for the foreseeable future.

Ideas of what can and must be achieved by good design are in a constant state of flux as a result of cultural and technological developments. Dieter Rams, however, came up with ten principles that advocate for a purist, almost imperceptible design. These principles are still considered timeless fundaments of design theory and practice today.

Less but Better does not set out to be a complete documentation of Dieter Rams’s body of work, nor does it claim to tell the full story of the company Braun. Rather the book explores the ideas, criteria, and methods behind Rams’s creations and reveals how a shifting culture of product manufacturing gave rise to universal design benchmarks. From his reflections on design ethics and values we can distill a clear paradigm for future design — because one principle has remained firm over the years: less is simply better.

About the Authors:

Dieter Rams, born in Wiesbaden in 1932, initially studied architecture. He is widely considered one of the most significant industrial designers of the twentieth century. In the more than 40 years that he spent working at the electrical appliance manufacturer Braun, Rams turned out a wealth of pioneering creations that continue to influence designers around the world today. He has also generated a new awareness of the social function of design in Germany.

Jo Klatt is an acknowledged connoisseur and collector of Braun products. For many years he worked at the magazine Design+Design and was the publisher of numerous works, including the first edition of Less but Better.

Aaron James Draplin
ID: 13820
Издательство: Abrams

Esquire. Ford Motors. Burton Snowboards. The Obama Administration. While all of these brands are vastly different, they share at least one thing in common: a teeny, little bit of Aaron James Draplin. Draplin is one of the new school of influential graphic designers who combine the power of design, social media, entrepreneurship, and DIY aesthetic to create a successful business and way of life.

Pretty Much Everything is a mid-career survey of work, case studies, inspiration, road stories, lists, maps, how-tos, and advice. It includes examples of his work — posters, record covers, logos — and presents the process behind his design with projects like Field Notes and the “Things We Love” State Posters. Draplin also offers valuable advice and hilarious commentary that illustrates how much more goes into design than just what appears on the page. With Draplin’s humor and pointed observations on the contemporary design scene, Draplin Design Co. is the complete package for the new generation of designers.

About the Author:

Aaron James Draplin is the founder of the Draplin Design Co., based in Portland, Oregon. He has created print, identity, and illustration work for Timberline Lodge, Woolrich, Patagonia, Nike, Mark Maron, and Sasquatch Festival, among others.

Charles and Ray Eames
ID: 15341
Издательство: Ammo Books

Renowned designers Charles and Ray Eames are among the greatest designers of the 20th century. They are, of course, most well known for their groundbreaking and iconic furniture designs, but they also created important, creative, experimental, and beautiful work in the areas of architecture, exhibit design, textile design, product design, graphic design, toy design, film, and photography. The Eameses distinctly postwar American enthusiasm and openness to the world around them gave them free license to explore work in many disciplines. This book celebrates the seamlessness and fluidity in which they operated as both a husband-and-wife team and as designers unrestricted by traditionally professional boundaries. They brought a sense of innocence and playfulness to the design process, as well as a tremendous love and discipline in all they created in many different fields and mediums. Augmenting the abundant visual images, Eames Demetrios Charles s grandson and the director of the Eames Office has written chapter essays and an insightful introduction.

Over 300 works from the beloved early 20th-century illustrator and graphic designer

The highly original and unique art of Escher, one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century

Maurits Cornelis Escher was born in 1898 in the Netherlands and died there in 1972. In 1922 he first visited Italy (Tuscany, Umbria and Liguria) and in 1923 arrived in Rome, where he lived for twelve years, until 1935. The Roman period had a strong influence on all his later work, which saw him prolific in the production of lithographs and etchings especially of landscapes, views, architecture and views of that ancient and Baroque Rome that he loved to investigate in its most intimate dimension, that of the night, by the dim light of a lantern. Restless, reserved and undoubtedly brilliant, Escher in his famous engravings and lithographs created a unique, imaginative, impossible world where art, mathematics, science, physics and design converge.

Published on the exhibition in Rome, the volume gathers over 300 works, including new acquisitions and many of his most notable pieces that have made him famous all over the world, documenting the story of the Dutch artist’s genius with the most iconic works of his production such as Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938) and the Emblemata series, which belong to the common imagination referable to the great artist. The book also features the complete series of 12 Roman Nocturnes produced in 1934. An artist discovered relatively recently, Escher is loved by those who know art, but also by those who are passionate about mathematics, geometry, science, design, and graphics. A wide range of themes converge in his works, and for this reason in the panorama of art history he represents a uniqueness.

About the Author:

Mark Veldhuysen is CEO of the M.C. Escher Company.

Federico Giudiceandrea is one of the world’s leading Escher experts.

Text by Becky Sunshine, Foreword by Stephen Jones, Contributions by Christian Louboutin and Vivienne Westwood and Kelly Wearstler
ID: 15682
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first illustrated monograph presenting the work of British designer Lee Broom, founder of the eponymous brand and celebrated for his stylish, contemporary take on classic design products.

The book explores the many influences and ideas behind Broom’s portfolio of more than 100 products as well as highlights the way in which he showcases his work through original and engaging installations, exhibitions, and films. Lee Broom furniture, lighting, and accessories, some of which is now held in the permanent collections of cultural institutions in London and New York, is at once familiar and yet feels new — a signature skill of reinterpretation and the mix of classicism and modernity.

The book is presented thematically in four chapters, each relating to a defining aspect of Broom’s design personality. “Art Form” explores Broom’s relationship with architecture and silhouette, as well as the way in which he works with form, balance, and symmetry. “History Repeats Itself” delves into Broom’s fascination with historical starting points and reinvention and how techniques of the past can inform the future. “Material Boy” focuses on Broom’s meticulous approach to the process of making, his clever use of materials, and the art of collaboration. Finally, “Drama of Design” is a study of Broom’s background in theater and fashion and how both have permeated his creative thinking and the way he presents his work as immersive experiences.

With special contributions by Christian Louboutin, Vivienne Westwood and Kelly Wearstler.

Edited by Barnaba Fornasetti, Introduction by Andrea Branzi, Text by Mariuccia Casadio
ID: 7644
Издательство: Rizzoli

This elaborate volume, authored by the designer’s son, is a splendid celebration of one of the world’s most inventive design minds. Combining whimsy and elegance, Piero Fornasetti (1913 –1988) transformed everyday objects like cups, scarves, and screens into works of art featuring his idiosyncratic leitmotifs, such as the hand, the female face, and luminescent fish. Additionally, he created a wide range of works, including idealized architectural fantasy drawings, book designs, and provocative nudes, as well as the decor for the luxury liner Andrea Doria. Perhaps most famous for dazzling pieces of trompe l’oeil furniture, Fornasetti was rediscovered in the 1980s and has remained much sought-after by collectors worldwide. Featuring 2,800 illustrations, many never before published, the monograph is designed to be an artist’s book that reflects as faithfully as possible Fornasetti’s own approach to design. Fornasetti’s work is organized by type and includes paintings, sculptures and etchings, furniture, graphics, textiles, glass, screens, trays, and ceramics, as well as smaller categories. With unique and exhaustive access to the archives, this epic undertaking covers detailed technical, biographical, and bibliographical information, including a list of exhibitions and a register of the complete works. A must-have for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

For fans, collectors and dealers Rizzoli's upcoming book Fornasetti: The Complete Universe is cause for massive celebration. Nearly 700 pages long, with 3,000 images and illustrations, it is a composite catalogue raisonne and coffee table book extraordinaire. For those ever frustrated with the paucity of information on Fornasetti, the book feels like a miracle.

I like to equate Fornasetti with Andy Warhol. Both had long, prolific careers that constantly replenished their output with material that was simultaneously fresh but iconic. Both were talented illustrators and masters of appropriation. Fornasetti is remarkable in the realms of both art and design in his enthusiastic embrace of figuration, antiquity and the ornate defying not only his generations aesthetic preferences but many trends inherent in Modernism.

Unlike Warhol, whose works are mostly priced in the million-dollar range, objects by Fornasetti remain accessible to a large segment of the population. Of course, there are Fornasetti pieces (notably 1950’s furniture emblazoned with his most iconic motifs) with price tags that approach six figures. However, there is also a significant amount of material available on the secondary market today that was made by the Fornasetti atelier during his lifetime. (Full disclosure: I am a dealer who specializes in vintage Fornasetti) Such pieces, including everything from silk scarves, lamps, umbrella stands, ashtrays, mirrors and decorated porcelain can be found in the several hundred to several thousand dollar range. Fornasetti: The Complete Universe is such an astounding book as for the first time there is an attempt to document and date everything (?!) that Piero created during his lifetime. Fornasetti has numerous motifs or subjects that he applied to an array of consumer goods that are uniquely his own notably malachite, mythology, playing cards, the personification of the sun and moon, musical instruments and “Themes & Variations” (which puts a woman’s face in over 300 surrealist scenarios).

The book is composed of two halves; one dedicated to his artistic ambitions and evolution, the second how his talents were applied to creating a host of elaborate and distinctive consumer products. Fornasetti’s son, Barnaba is largely responsible for both maintaining his father’s archives, the creation of this book and the enduring popularity of Fornasetti. Since his father’s death in 1988, Barnaba has actively reissued designs and licensed certain iconic images. Some purists may find it problematic that such post-humous work is included here. After all such pieces were not created nor overseen by the creator and will likely never appreciate in value.

About the Authors:

Barnaba Fornasetti is a designer and oversees his father’s legacy. Andrea Branzi is a leading architect and designer in Milan and has published a number of books on design, including The Hot House: Italian New Wave Design. Mariuccia Casadio is the art consultant for Italian Vogue and the author of Dolce & Gabbana: Fashion Album, among other books.

In 1949 Francis Bacon found his subject - the human body - and from then on it remained his principal theme. But he did not paint from life. Instead he appropriated images from the mass media that he manipulated into his "studies." This book presents over 200 of these documents, about which Bacon was secretive but which, it emerges, were integral to his creative process.

Culled from thousands of pieces of original material found in his studio, including newspapers, magazines, books, and photographs, these items have each been exhaustively and minutely researched, providing for the first time comprehensive details of the artist's sources. Previously unseen, these visually thrilling documents demonstrate Bacon's tactile, visceral relationship with his sources and his unerring eye for seeking out visual stimulation in the most unexpected places.

This unique selection of material from Bacon's sudio - meticulously documented and compellingly presented - will provide an invaluable insight into both the artist's work and his working methods.

Издательство: Arnoldsche

The discovery of the Oberstein company Jakob Bengel as a prominent jewellery manufacturer has liberated Oberstein from the stigma of being the “underdog” of the German jewellery industry. Wilhelm Lindemann and Christianne Weber-Stöber document in this current study its independent contribution to the evolution of early German jewellery design between 1910 and 1933 using Bengel as an example.

Highlights from the collection of Drs. Margarete and Heribert Händel, hitherto unpublished pieces of Bengel jewellery, and contemporary designs attest to the exceptional level of production as part of the reformist ideas of the Deutscher Werkbund, the German Schools of Art and Crafts, and the Bauhaus.

With this book, the industrial monument Historische Uhrketten und Bijouteriewarenfabrik Jakob Bengel, Idar-Oberstein together with the Jakob Bengal Foundation marks the factory’s 150-year anniversary.

Text in English and German.

The first fully illustrated and comprehensive introduction to May Morris's work as an artist, designer and embroiderer, published in association with the V&A

May Morris (1862–1938), younger daughter of William Morris, was a significant figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement and a pioneer of ‘art embroidery’. She ran the embroidery department of Morris & Co., as well as designing textiles, wallpapers and jewellery. May was also an influential teacher and lectured in the UK and America.

May Morris: Arts & Crafts Designer is the first publication to present the full range of May Morris’s work and reveals her exceptional skill and originality. It draws together her designs, exquisite embroideries, watercolours, costume and jewellery from museums around the world, and in particular the rich collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the William Morris Gallery, London. The book contains more than 180 items in colour and detailed information on their materials and provenance compiled by leading experts. There are also new insights into May’s personal life and relationships, her social activism and her support for other craftswomen.

This authoritative and illuminating study places May Morris, whose reputation has been overshadowed by that of her father, firmly among the leading British designer-makers of the Arts and Crafts movement.
