Pentagram: Living by Design (two volumes) is the definitive statement on 50 years of Pentagram. This is an in-depth survey of the group from its beginnings in 1970s London to its current status as one of the powerhouses of international design.

Book one, The Biography, offers a comprehensive analysis of the group, its partners, its achievements, its multidisciplinary approach, and its unique business model. This is accompanied by a plethora of images (some never published), a visual essay of Pentagram’s work across four main sectors, a selection of partners writings, a Pentagram family tree, and much more.

Book two, The Directory, has profiles of 50 partners, past and present, accompanied by extensive coverage of their work. It’s a stellar roll call: from the five famous founders to some of the most celebrated names in contemporary design. It also includes a list of everyone who worked in the firm’s various offices.

Both books are designed by Tony Brook and the Spin design team and use a range of paper stocks and special colours.

About the Authors:

Adrian Shaughnessy is a graphic designer, writer and senior tutor at the Royal College of Art, London. He has written numerous books, including a recently published compendium of his design journalism, Scratching the Surface, and monographs devoted to legendary designers Herb Lubalin and Ken Garland. He regularly contributes to design publications and blogs such as Design ObserverEyeCreative Review and Design Week. In 1988, Shaughnessy co-founded design studio Intro; today he runs ShaughnessyWorks, a consultancy combining art direction, writing, editing and lecturing, and is a co-director of Unit Editions. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale. Tony Brook is primarily a designer, but also a publisher, collector and curator. Brook founded SPIN, his south London-based studio, in 1992, and is a co-director of Unit Editions. He is currently a visiting professor in Graphic Design at the University for the Arts, a specialist arts university in the South East of England.

The first book on the great American landscape painter to focus primarily on his work in Nevada, capturing the beauty of the American West, its open spaces and the developing landscape at the dawn of the modern era.

This is the first comprehensive publication on the paintings, letters, photographs, and poetry made by Maynard Dixon (1875–1946) while he was in Nevada. This large, landscape format book accompanies a blockbuster exhibition on this colorful western painter and illustrator.

Although Dixon’s contributions as an artist are widely recognized throughout the American West, this significant publication surveys nearly 180 artworks he created in Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and the Eastern Sierra from 1901 to 1944. Dixon first visited the state of Nevada nearly 125 years ago; and while much has changed during the past century, one can still explore many of the same remote locales depicted in these paintings or drive across the state beneath what many like to refer to as a cloud-filled, “Maynard Dixon sky.”

Richly illustrated, including a wealth of privately owned paintings never before reproduced, the volume includes by texts by scholar Donald J. Hagerty on Dixon’s Nevada journeys, a significant essay on the art of the Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam), and Dixon’s depictions of the workers who built the dam. The book has a 3-piece binding and gilded edges.

About the Authors:

Neville Brody is a globally acclaimed creative director, designer, typographer and brand strategist, whose career spans over four decades. Well-known internationally for his iconic work on album sleeve designs and as art director for The Face and Arena, he has also worked on major projects for the BBC, The Times, Tate and Channel 4.
Adrian Shaughnessy is a graphic designer, writer and publisher based in London. He is a senior tutor in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art. His previous books include How to be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul and Graphic Design: A User’s Manual.
Steven Heller is a graphic designer, art director, art critic and author. For over thirty years he held the position of senior art director at New York Times Book Review and U&lc magazine. He has authored and co-authored over 200 books on design and popular culture.
Jo-Ann Furniss is an editor, creative director and writer based in Leigh-on-Sea who has worked on The Facei-D and Arena Homme+ amongst many other key titles.
Naomi Hirabayashi is a Tokyo-based graphic designer and art director involved in creative direction, branding, visual identity, corporate identity systems, and design for apparel brands, stores, musicians and many other fields.

In recent years, he started shifting from graphic design to space and product design, focusing on cultural design, creative industries, and brand marketing. In 2021 he founded the brand Material Imagination in Chengdu.

Lü Peng born in Chongqing in 1956, is an independent art historian, critic, and curator. He teaches at China Academy of Art, Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, and Macau University of Science and Technology. He has published some of the most important Chinese artists’ monographs and the most complete volume on modern Chinese Art History, A History of Art in 20th-century China and curated a number of solo and group exhibitions in China and internationally.

Bao Qian is an independent art critic, curator and cultural planner, graduated from China Academy of Fine Arts. She has won the Chinese Contemporary Art Theory and Criticism National prize multiple times and has participated to major national planning projects such as “Gulangyu Cultural Development Plan" and "Quanzhou Ancient City Cultural Development Plan”.

Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) and Achille (1918-2002) are the eldest and the youngest of the three Castiglioni brothers who all studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic.
