At last, a mathematical explanation of how art works presented in a manner we can all understand.

Kimberly Elam takes the reader on a geometrical journey, lending insight and coherence to the design process by exploring the visual relationships that have foundations in mathematics as well as the essential qualities of life.

Geometry of Design takes a close look at a broad range of twentieth-century examples of design, architecture and illustration (from the Barcelona chair to the paintings of Georges Seurat, from the Braun hand blender to the Conico kettle), revealing underlying geometric structures in their compositions. Explanations and techniques of visual analysis make the inherent mathematical relationships evident and a must-have for anyone involved in art, design, or architecture graphic arts. The book focuses not only on the classic systems of proportioning, such as the golden section and root rectangles, but also on less well-known proportioning systems such as the Fibonacci Series.

Through detailed diagrams these geometric systems are brought to life giving an effective insight into the design process.

About the Author:

Kimberly Elam is the head of the Graphic and Interactive Communication Design Department at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. She also runs Studio Resource, Inc., a website for design educators.

Effective layout is essential to communication and enables the end-user to not only be drawn in with an innovative design, but to digest information easily. Making and Breaking the Grid is a comprehensive layout design workshop that assumes that in order to effectively break the rules of grid-based design, one must first understand those rules and see them applied to real-world projects.

Basics include composing typographic space, format determination, and sequencing and systemization. Various types of grids manuscript, column, modular, hierarchical are also covered.

Text reveals top designers' work in process and rationale. Projects with similar characteristics are linked through a simple notational system that encourages exploration and comparison of structure ideas. Each project is shown comprehensively so readers can see its structure revealed over several pages, at a size that allows for inspection of detail.

Also included are historical overviews that summarize the development of layout concepts, both grid-based and non-grid based, in modern design practice.

The multidimensional nature and simplicity of geometric shapes have fascinated designers since design's early days

The creative possibilities that they offer are unlimited, and we interpret them constantly. Whereas the rectangle represents symmetry and order, the square, with its equal faces and angles, denotes calm and neutrality, and the circle evokes perfection and infinity.

Shapes: Geometric Forms in Graphic Design reveals how the most innovative studios and agencies continue to reinvent geometric shapes to create new design philosophies.

This is an essential guide for those who wish to incorporate new insights into their creative repertoire.

How to design and market services to create outstanding customer experiences. The first practical book for companies, institutions and governments that deliver a service

This is Service Design Thinking introduces an interdisciplinary approach to designing services. Service design is a bit of a buzzword these days and has gained a lot of interest from various fields. This book, assembled to describe and illustrate the emerging field of service design, was brought together using exactly the same co-creative and user-centred approaches you can read and learn about inside. The boundaries between products and services are blurring and it is time for a different way of thinking: this is service design thinking.

23 international authors and even more online contributors from the global service design community invested their knowledge, experience and passion together to create this book.

It introduces service design thinking in manner accessible to beginners and students, it broadens the knowledge and can act as a resource for experienced design professionals. Besides an introduction to service design thinking through five basic principles, a selection of individual perspectives demonstrate the similarities and differences between various disciplines involved in the design of services.

Additionally, the book outlines an iterative design process and showcases 25 adaptable service design tools, exemplifying the practice of service design with five international case studies. The book concludes with an insight into the current state of service design research and sets service design thinking in a philosophical context.
