About the Authors:

Professional photographer and keen amateur cyclist Michael Blann spent his formative years racing his bike and dreaming of riding in the Tour de France. Aged nineteen, he left England for Australia to ride in a well-respected amateur team, during which he competed in the nine-day Golden West Tour in Queensland. This experience left him with the realization that a pro contract was out of reach. Returning to the UK, he enrolled in art college and eventually moved into advertising. This book brings together Blann’s two great passions – cycling and photography – and evolved from a desire to produce a definitive record of the immense, immovable landforms that have set the stage for the most intense, nail-biting dramas the cycling world has ever seen. Andrew Diprose is Group Creative Director at WIRED magazine in London and a keen cyclist. He lectures regularly on art direction, photography and illustration. He is also the co-founder, publisher and art director of cycling independent title The Ride Journal.

Susannah Osborne is a journalist and has written for numerous newspapers and magazines on the subjects of travel, fitness and adventure sport. She has cycled since her late teens, first as a means to get around her native North Devon, and later as an active member of the women’s road and criterium racing scene in the UK. She worked and cycled with Michael Blann for several years before teaming up with him on this book, which appeals to her love of storytelling and her long-standing fascination with dramatic landscapes.

Jonathan Franklin is an author and investigative reporter based in South America. As a correspondent for The Guardian, Washington Post, and Sydney Morning Herald, he has covered the continent's biggest news stories over the past three decades. Born and raised in the mountains of New Hampshire, he started skiing soon after walking and has explored the slopes of the Andes in the best—and worst—conditions. His only advice to newbies south of the equator is to slather on the sunblock—you won't believe how sunny these slopes get. Franklin's books cover extreme survival and include the saga of the trapped Chilean miners (33 Men) and a fisherman lost at sea for 14 months (438 Days).

Sam Haddad is a freelance journalist specializing in action sports (especially snowboarding and surfing), responsible travel, and the environment, with bylines in The Guardian, 1843, Raconteur, and Huck Magazine, among others. Based in Brighton, U.K., with her husband and two sons, Haddad lived in Chamonix, France for two winters about 20 years ago. She edits the newsletter Climate & Board Sports.

After falling in love with skiing at the age of three, Gabriella Le Breton has skied in over 130 resorts across the globe. Her passion for mountains blossomed while living in the Alps as a child and further flourished while traveling extensively through the Rockies, Himalayas, and Arctic Circle later in life. Over the past two decades, Le Breton has written The Ultimate Ski Book and The Stylish Life: Skiing and is a regular winter sports correspondent for the Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, and Condé Nast Traveller. Chamonix-based mountain athlete and photographer, Aaron Rolph is on a mission to inspire human-powered adventures all over the world. Rolph spends his winters skiing big mountains in the Alps and summers mountain biking, running, or paddling. Born in Vienna, Florian Scheimpflug has traveled the world in search of the best rock formations. However, he is just as fond of the snow. To be close to the mountains, the director and author (Dem Genuss auf der Spur: 50 Skitouren in den österreichischen Alpen) has lived in Hallein since 2017.

Rachel Taylor is an experienced media and communications professional exploring the practice of regenerative storytelling. She shapes and supports projects seeding regenerative narratives, disrupting degenerative paradigms, and leveraging storytelling that’s joyful, hopeful, and celebratory. In her writing, she mostly explores topics related to ecology, joyful activism, and our planetary interbeing.

A compendium of magnificent engineering drawings that gives a unique overview of the history of railways

The advent of railways played an instrumental part in Britain’s economic and social revolution in the 19th century, with technical advances that were the envy of the world. From the beginning, these developments were chronicled through meticulous drawings of locomotives, carriages and wagons, as well as of stations, bridges and tunnels. The detailed plans facilitated the manufacturing process and the maintenance of the rapidly expanding railway network.

Miraculously, about a million of these magnificent drawings have survived and are held in the National Railway Museum in York. Christopher Valkoinen has selected over 130 examples that tell the engineering history of great innovations and triumphs, such as the Forth Bridge, and reveal the work of famous pioneers, including Richard Trevithick, George Stephenson, and Nigel Gresley of Flying Scotsman fame. Other plans range from Queen Victoria’s royal saloon and a travelling post office to a station tea room at York and modern experiments with a hovertrain. There are also drawings for railways around the world: in the USA, Russia, Japan, India, Australia and Egypt, among others, as well as contemporary photographs and posters.

Throughout, Valkoinen provides valuable insights into the social and political impact of the railways. He also reveals how these drawings are more than a reference tool for the historian or modelmaker; they are exquisite works of art, painstakingly produced by highly skilled artists, which can be appreciated in their own right.
