Photographs by Mark Mann, Foreword by Chita Rivera
ID: 15784
Издательство: Rizzoli

Renowned portrait photographer Mark Mann documents an impressive host of dancers — their eloquent bodies in posed tranquility and vibrant motion — representing years of excellence and varied disciplines of the art form.

A celebration of the strength and emotive ability of dancers, this book is a collection of images that captures the dynamism and energy of the mediums of both dance and photography. In homage to Mann’s hero Irving Penn, he installed a backdrop of old monochromatic muslin. Dancers from many genres — ballet, jazz, African, tap, Broadway theater, hip-hop, ballroom — perform and discuss their passions about the art form in this stark environment.

Mann captures the humanity and spontaneity of principal and lead dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Martha Graham Dance Company, New York City Ballet, and many other troupes. Subjects include dance personalities Misty Copeland, Carmen de Lavallade, Tiler Peck, Chita Rivera, James Whiteside, Omari Wiles, Xin Ying, and many others.

As a photographer, Mann is used to working hard at making something happen in his images; here, he has taken a slightly more passive role, witnessing and capturing the expressive and talented subjects that take control of each frame. This book is a testament to the emotional and physical power of each dancer, in stillness and in motion.

About the Author:

Mark Mann is a renowned celebrity portrait photographer who originally hails from Scotland. Chita Rivera is an American dancer, singer, and actress.

From well-known portraits of Monaco’s “beautiful people” to rarely-seen landscapes, this collection of images documents two decades of Helmut Newton’s love affair with the sun-kissed world of the French Riviera.

Helmut Newton was in his sixties and already a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the French Riviera. At an age when many people would consider retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career. The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. And it was in Monaco that Newton finally tried his hand at landscapes. While this volume focuses primarily on the years 1981 to 2004, it also looks at Newton’s historic links with the Côte d’Azur and the area around Bordighera, Italy. There are essays by a range of experts in photography, film, and art and three interviews, including one with Paloma Picasso. In these remarkable photographs readers will discover the French Riviera through Newton’s fascinated, slightly ironic lens: a way of life characterized by ease and elegance; a world dominated by appearance and superficiality; and a veritable living theater, in which he was both actor and privileged member of the audience.

The photographer:

Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most influential photographers of all time. He first achieved international fame in the 1970s while working principally for French Vogue, and became celebrated for his controversial scenarios, bold lighting, and striking compositions in street or interior settings, rather than studios. His many titles and awards included Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Nick Brandt
ID: 14170
Издательство: Hatje Cantz

The Day May Break, photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020, is the first part of a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts. Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be re-wilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual, as we increasingly find ourselves in a kind of limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, in spite of their loss, these people and animals are the survivors. And therein lies possibility and hope.

About the Author:

Nick Brandt (b.1964) is an English-born, US-based photographer whose themes always relate to the disappearing natural world. He is the co-founder of the Big Life Foundation, in Kenya, where all of these photographs were shot.

Portraits of Survival and Hope

Some of Nick Brandt’s subjects are humans, some are animals, but they all are creatures of equal and obvious personhood. The overwhelming sense in the photographer’s ongoing global series The Day May Break is that they are all figuring out how to live in a new world. Each has arrived at the shoot at Senda Verde wildlife sanctuary in Bolivia through their own cascade of tragedy. Both extreme droughts and floods have destroyed people’s homes and livelihoods. Victims of habitat destruction and wildlife trafficking, the animals are rescues that can never be released to the wild. People and animals were photographed in the same frame and indeed convey a sense of connectedness through a shared fate. Fog is the unifying visual, symbolic of the natural world rapidly fading from view; and an echo of the smoke from wildfires, intensified by climate change, devastating so much of the planet. But in spite of their loss, these people and animals are survivors, pioneers entering the new phase our world has reached. In The Day May Break they share their powerful stories.

About the Author:

Nick Brandt (*1964, London) studied painting and film at St. Martin’s School of Art, London. In 1992 he moved to California, where he still lives today. Since 2001, he has documented the destructive impact that humankind is having on the natural world and, as a result, on humans themselves. Chapter One of his seminal series The Day May Break featured photographs taken in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020. Chapter Two, shot in Bolivia in 2022, is the first time in his 20-year career that Brandt has made work outside of Africa.

Nick Waplington, with an introduction by Simon Baker
ID: 16795
Издательство: Phaidon

An expansive and timely survey on contemporary British photographer and artist Nick Waplington, with work spanning his entire 40-year career – his first comprehensive retrospective volume

London- and New York-based artist Nick Waplington uses photography to capture the complex and far-reaching aspects of our lived experience. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s with Living Room and has since become known for his unfiltered depictions of people and places, and the sociopolitical backgrounds that define them.

From the chaos, violence, and euphoria of riots, protests, and free parties to the surreal, hypnotic quiet of his large-format landscapes, Waplington’s work (in all its messy humanness) transcends stereotypes and confounds expectations, and this book is no exception. Including never-before-published images, offering new insight into both well- and lesser-known projects, as well as Waplington’s painting and artistic practice, the book opens with a newly commissioned introduction from Simon Baker, one of the leading curators of contemporary photography in Europe and director of the Maison Européenne de la photographie (MEP), Paris.

This is the most extensive survey of Waplington's work to date, and includes previously unpublished photographs, as well as paintings, sketchbooks, and other artworks that complement his practice.

About the Authors:

Nick Waplington is a British artist living between London and New York. He has published extensively throughout his career, including Safety in Numbers (1995), Truth or Consequences (Phaidon, 2001), Working Process (2013), a collaboration with Alexander McQueen, Hackney Riviera (2019), and Anaglypta (2020). Waplington has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and in 2015, was the first living British artist to have a solo photographic exhibition in the main galleries of Tate Britain, London.

Simon Baker is a curator, writer, and educator, and is currently director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris. Formerly, he was senior curator of international art at the Tate Modern, London

For the majority of his decades-long career, Norman Rockwell relied on a camera to help him render the iconic scenarios born in his imagination. Photograph by photograph, he painstakingly assembled the specific features he sought for his envisioned illustration, projecting whole or partial pictures of amateur models, objects and settings onto drafting paper, and from there, onto canvas.

Many of Rockwell's most famous works - including those reproduced for LIFE and the Saturday Evening Post - began behind the lens. Uncanny in their approximation to his final paintings and unknown outside a small circle of Rockwell specialists, his study photographs are among the most evocative ever taken by a painter and undoubtedly cast his brushwork in a new light.

Oliviero Toscani, Tommaso Basilio
ID: 18365
Издательство: Welbeck Publishing

Toscani's photography often depicts what no one has ever dared to explore before in advertising, such as homosexuality, racism and anorexia. This magnificent volume explores the creative force behind brands and advertising campaigns, focusing on the finest examples of his work. Interspersed throughout are collected stories of the life of the man behind the lens from some of the major personalities in the creative industries. Contributors include the photographers, David Bailey and Rankin, fashion designer Issey Miyake, designers Philippe Starck and Kenzo Takada, the musician Peter Gabriel and film director and actor, Mathieu Kassovitz, and the entrepreneur Luciano Benetton.

The book features Toscani's advertising campaigns, particularly his work with Benetton from 1982 to 2000, which was some of the most shocking advertising ever seen: in some cases provoking lawsuits and the removal of Benetton clothing from stores. However, Toscani worked wonders for the company, making it into one of the world's most recognised clothing brands – despite no items of clothing appearing in the campaigns between 1990 and 2000.

Throughout the years he has also created corporate images and campaigns for companies such as Esprit, Chanel, Fiorucci, Prenatal and many more. He has collaborated as fashion photographer for international magazines such as Elle, Vogue, GQ, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, and Liberation.

About the Authors:

Oliviero Toscani is one of world's most high profile image-makers. He was born in Milan, Italy in 1942, and studied photography and design at the University of the Arts in Zurich from 1961 to 1965. He is best known for his shocking advertising campaigns.
Tommaso Basilio studied at the Politecnico di Milano before becoming one of Italy's most respected fashion magazine editors working for L'Uomo Vogue. He was later Head of Communication at Romeo Gigli and then at Malo. He currently teaches History of Fashion Photography at the IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) in Milan and Rome and works as a freelance journalist and stylist.

Introduction by Ambassador Juan Carlos Gamarra, Photographs by Mariano Vivanco, Contributions by Jorge Villacorta
ID: 16540
Издательство: Rizzoli

Historians, art-lovers, and the fashion-conscious will be united in their love of this sumptuous and well-researched history of Mariano Vivanco’s motherland.

Peru by Mariano Vivanco is a once-in-a-lifetime project in which the photographer uses his love of imagery, history, and fashion alike to create a truly remarkable body of work. Vivanco takes readers through a personal journey depicting the history and folklore of his beloved country, Peru, through various photo essays. Vivanco has chosen to tell the story chronologically starting from the first pre-Columbian Inca civilization, Caral. This then passes through Moche, Nazca, where he photographed geo-glyphs from an airplane, to the Chimu civilization leading up to the Inca Empire. The Peruvian jungle served as the inspiration through its mythologies: El Bufeo Colorado, El Chullachaqui, and the Devil of the Red Flora to name a few. Vivanco also explored religious saints, Santa Rosa and San Martin De Porres, as well as rebellion leader Tupac Amaru II and his wife Micaela Bastidas.

About the Author:

Mariano Vivanco travelled the world with his family from a very early age, before eventually settling down in New Zealand at the age of ten. This is where his passion for art and photography began. Inspired by the scenes depicted in the works of Edward Steichen and Horst P. Horst, Vivanco moved to London in the year 2000 to pursue a career in fashion photography, with his first shoot ending up on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. Jorge Villacorta is a Peruvian art critic and independent curator with a strong interest in contemporary visual arts. He was awarded the medal for Merit as cultural agent, by the Ministry of Culture of Peru, in 2013. His Excellency Ambassador Juan Carlos Gamarra is the Ambassador of Peru in London UK.

Iconic and rarely seen images retrace the story of Robert Capa's extraordinary life and work.

Photographer and war reporter Robert Capa (1913–54) is a legend of photojournalism, and his work, widely recognized and sometimes controversial, shaped the history of the medium. Born Endre Friedmann to Jewish parents in Budapest, he left Hungary in the early 1930s and took the pseudonym Robert Capa, believing that it was easier to sell his work with an American-sounding name. He went on to cover the major events of the mid-20th century: from the rise of Front Populaire in France to the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War and Indochina, where he was killed by a landmine.

This retrospective uses both iconic and rarely-seen images to retrace the story of Capa’s life, delving into archives and presenting not only the original photographs but also the magazine features in which they first appeared, to offer valuable context and connection. Charismatic and committed, Capa redefined what it was to be a photojournalist, and his unforgettable images have lost none of their power to fascinate.

About the Author:

Michel Lefebvre has written numerous articles and books on Robert Capa, and is an expert on the Spanish Civil War

The volume collects a rich selection of photographs from the archives of the Magnum Photos agency, taken by Robert Capa, in a combination of emblematic shots of his work and images that have appeared more rarely.

The intent is to hint at some facets of a passionate and ultimately elusive character as Capa was: a courageous witness of his time, a strong, insatiable and at the same time dissatisfied personality, with the traits of a gambler. Therefore, not only the war images that made him one of the most famous photojournalists of the 20th century, but also lesser-known shots that allow you to appreciate the very high formal quality of his photography and, together with it, his personality.

- Robert Capa, the great photographer founder of the Magnum Agency; his story in 366 images
