The master fashion photographer makes a gorgeous typology of the ultimate accessory

“In 1999 I did a book called Go-Sees where girls came knocking on my door over a one-year period to show their portfolio and themselves. Recently, walking through Paris, I found myself thinking what work I would exhibit in my upcoming museum show in Naples. Handbags, I’m just gonna do a handbag book and a show. It felt like another Go-Sees book to me. Friends of my girlfriend were asking me what kind of a photographer I am, what I photograph. I replied: ‘Actually, come to think of it, mostly handbags.’ I always like their astonished and disappointed faces! I realized through the 30 years of my career, I photographed a hell of a lot of handbags within my fashion work. And as the Americans once said to me, ‘Where’s the money shot?’ I looked at them puzzled. ‘Show me the money shot!’ they repeated. Here they are: the money shots in this collection of images for my new book.” Juergen Teller

Annotated in his wry, inimitable voice, Juergen Teller presents over three decades of fashion and editorial work in a groundbreaking volume that combines photography, collage, and candid (and often humorous) autobiography.

One of the most influential photographers working today, Juergen Teller creates images that are instantly recognizable. Raw, often overexposed and displaying a spontaneity and candor, Teller’s visual language reflects a measured yet uncompromising sense of rebellion.

This book includes landmark editorials with nearly every important fashion label of the era and celebrities from Kate Moss to Charlotte Rampling and Kurt Cobain to Yves Saint Laurent. Outtakes of iconic shoots (including infamous ones with Courtney Love, Cindy Sherman, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, and Björk) that have never been published will be included in this volume.

Teller first broke into fashion in 1996 with a magazine cover of a naked Kristen McMenamy with the word Versace scrawled across her chest. Since then, his fashion photography has been featured in all the international VoguesAnOther MagazineIndexSelf-ServiceWDetailsPurplei-D, and 032c, among others. A highly sought-after cult hero and the author of many iconic campaigns, Teller has collaborated with the likes of Helmut Lang, Raf Simons, Hedi Slimane, Nicolas Ghesquière, Phoebe Philo, Vivienne Westwood, Miuccia Prada, and Isabel Marant, and shot every season of Marc Jacobs’s ready-to-wear collections from 1998 to 2014.

Encompassing the entire career of the American surrealist painter Kay Sage, this catalogue raisonné features all her known mature works and the latest scholarship on a brilliant artist.

While her career as a painter was often eclipsed during her lifetime by that of her husband, Yves Tanguy, recent scholarship posits that the influence was mutual and that Kay Sage’s work was distinct from Tanguy’s. The full extent of Sage’s talent is laid bare in this stunning slip-cased book that includes many works that have not been viewed publicly since the 1940s and 1950s. An insightful essay explores Sage’s involvement with the Surrealists and her marriage to Tanguy, as a partner and sounding board. A generously illustrated chronology includes personal and archival material that reveals much about her life and practice. The paintings, collages, and works on paper — haunting, evocative, and original — are reproduced to full effect, each with comprehensive provenance and exhibition history. Impeccably researched and engagingly written, this monograph brings to life an intrepid and hugely gifted artist whose talent is long overdue for recognition.

About the Authors:

Jessie Sentivan is an independent art historian and curator. She has held positions at the Williams College Museum of Art and the Arthur Dove Catalogue Raisonné Project, and was a contributing editor of the Hans Hofmann Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings.

Stephen Robeson Miller has written extensively about Kay Sage and her art in publications such as Art International, Dada & Surrealism, and various galleries catalogues around the world. He was co-curator of the landmark traveling exhibition Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy in 2011. He is also the author of Kay Sage: The Biographical Chronology and Four Surrealist One-Act Plays. His research papers on Sage, including interviews, are located at the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Mary Ann Caws is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Comparative Literature, English, and French and Resident Professor at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. An exploration of Jacques Henri Lartigue’s early photography and a vivid portrayal of Belle Epoque France

As a little boy of seven or eight, Jacques Henri Lartigue was given his first camera, and soon was developing his own photographs. Born into a prosperous family, from childhood Lartigue acutely observed the social rituals of the upper echelons of society through his photography. The hand-held Kodak camera, first introduced in 1888, granted the young photographer flexibility to capture the fine details of eccentric family members at home, the elaborate social parade in the Bois de Boulogne, on the beach in Normandy and beyond. Classic images of motor cars and high fashion sit alongside previously unpublished photographs from the Lartigue archive. These images of family beau-monde and demi-monde life are not only evidence of a prodigious talent, but also offer an intimate, adolescent perspective of Belle-Époque Paris, the world of Proust, Debussy and the Nabis, before the outbreak of the First World War.

At a young age Lartigue mastered the medium of photography: this exploration of his extraordinary childhood is interwoven with a social and cultural portrait of the Belle Époque. Bonnard and Vuillard used the camera as a reference point for painting, Eugène Atget documented the architecture of the old Paris ahead of its developers, but Lartigue was the first to harness the immediacy of the snapshot, often capturing his subjects mid-gesture as in real life, creating a new visual language for the 20th century.

The perfect primer on American photographer Louis Stettner

Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner (1922–2016) first took up a camera as a teenager and went on to establish an extraordinary career that lasted almost eighty years. After photographing life on the streets of New York, he joined the famous Photo League and befriended Sid Grossman and Weegee. In the Second World War he served as a combat photographer, and the fight against fascism strengthened his faith in Marxism and the working class.

Living between New York and Paris, he amassed a huge body of work that combined elements of New York street photography with lyrical humanism in the French style. His subjects were many and varied: passengers on the subway and tourists in the streets, Spanish fishermen and American beatniks, protests and demonstrations, landscapes and trees. But no matter where he found himself, he looked for beauty in the everyday and never lost his fundamental compassion and solidarity with ordinary people.

About the Author:

Virginie Chardin writes widely on photography and is the author of Elegance: The Seeberger Brothers and the Birth of Fashion Photography.

The official publication celebrating Magnum Photos’ 70th anniversary: a totally fresh and perceptive view of the legendary agency’s history and archive

This landmark book celebrates the 70th anniversary of the world’s greatest photographic agency, Magnum Photos. Offering a fresh and insightful view of the agency’s history and archive, it takes an analytical look at the work of Magnum’s photographers, and provides an understanding of what it is that makes Magnum Photos so different, so special and so great.

Author and curator Clément Chéroux, together with Clara Bouveresse, demonstrates how Magnum Photos owes its pre-eminence to the ability of its photographers to encompass and navigate the points between photography as art object and photography as documentary evidence. A Magnum photograph can be expressive and bear witness at the same time.

The book is organized into three main parts: Part I (1947–1968) views the Magnum archive through a humanist lens, focusing on post-war ideals of commonality and utopianism. Part II (1969–1989) shows a world fragmenting, with a focus on subcultures, minorities and outsiders. Part III (1990–2017) charts the ways in which Magnum photographers have captured – and continue to capture – a world in flux and under threat.

Featuring both group and individual projects, the book includes magazine spreads, newspaper articles, excerpts from books, and other valuable material, putting some of the world’s most recognizable images in creative context. Complete with extensive texts, an anthology of correspondence and an agency timeline, Magnum Manifesto is an expertly curated, essential collection of images and commentary for anyone seeking the very best in photography.

Contents List:

Preface: May 22, 1947 • Part I, 1947–1968: Human Rights and Wrongs • Part II, 1969–1989: An Inventory of Differences • Part III, 1990–2017: Stories About Endings • Epilogue: 'Magnum Is…'

About the Authors:

Clément Chéroux is senior curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He was formerly head curator of photography at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.

Clara Bouveresse is a photography historian, with a PhD in art history from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

Magnum Photos was the first photographic agency to be founded by photographers themselves, or as Henri Cartier-Bresson described them, by “adventurers with ethics.” Magnum owes its reputation to the talent of its members, who have never swerved from the principles of its founders: solidarity and respect for individuality. What unites all of these photographers, however, is their understanding of journalism and the warmly human gaze that they cast upon the world.

Man Ray (1890-1976) occupies a prominent place in 20th-century art history. A versatile artist, he was a pioneer of modern art. His polymorphic work crosses all fields of visual arts: photography, assemblage, sculpture, painting, drawing, film…
Man Ray arrived in Paris from New York in July 1921. Born in Philadelphia in 1890, of Jewish parents of Russian origin, Emmanuel Radintsky took a two-syllable pseudonym: “Man”, man (short for Manny, his childhood nickname) and “Ray”, the ray of light. Painter, draftsman, assembler of objects, in New York, he frequents intellectual and artistic circles, discovers the European avant-gardes with his first wife, who makes him discover French literature… He became friends with Marcel Duchamp, with whom he collaborated for artistic creations.

This friendship will last all their lives. In connection with the movement European Dada, they published the only issue of New York Dada, which attracted very little attention. Disappointed and disillusioned, Man Ray concludes that “Dada cannot live in New York”. He only has one objective: to join Duchamp, who has just returned to Paris..

Published in connection with an exhibition opening at Photo Elysée in spring 2024, this book presents more than 150 of Man Ray’s portraits, primarily from the 1920s and 30s

Man Ray (1890–1976) was a man both of and ahead of his time. With his conceptual approach and innovative techniques, he liberated photography from previous constraints and opened the floodgates to new ways of thinking about the medium.

A close friend of Marcel Duchamp and André Breton, he was one of the few photographers to be mentioned among the Dada artists and Surrealists. He also worked as a fashion photographer, first for Vogue, and later for Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair. Renowned as the creator of Ingres’ Violin – a photograph from 1924 that broke records when it was sold for $12.4 million in 2022 – Man Ray remains an influential figure in the worlds of art, fashion and pop culture, with many other artists referencing his work.

Published in connection with an exhibition at Photo Elysée and in the centenary year of the publication of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto, this book presents more than 150 of Man Ray’s portraits, primarily from the 1920s and 30s. It includes portraits of the leading lights of the Paris art scene, among them Marcel Duchamp, Robert Delaunay, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso, as well as a selection of his fashion work. As an innovator of photographic techniques and compositional form, Man Ray found the studio portrait – be it of the artists and writers with whom he had longstanding friendships, or of the objects and sculptures he collected – to be the playground in which he could express the visual wit and experimentation for which he is renowned.

About the Authors:

Nathalie Herschorfer is the Director of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her previous books for Thames & Hudson include Deborah Turbeville: PhotocollageBody and Coming into Fashion. Wendy A. Grossman is an independent scholar and curator. She is the author of Man Ray, African Art, and the Modernist Lens.

Masako Toda
ID: 15900
Издательство: Prestel

Published for the first time in book form, this startling and intimate collection of late images by the great twentieth-century Japanese photographer comprises the series Private Scenes and Letters from Journeys.

One of the most important Japanese photographers of the last century, Masahisa Fukase was known for exploring themes of isolation, lonliness, and melancholy and for his transgressive and intimate approach to the medium. This volume includes two of his last and arguably most personal series. Private Scenes features photographs taken over the course of the year 1989 in different locations around the world and in which he is both subject and photographer. He then painted over the prints with colored washes to create an entirely new piece. For this same series, he later photographed scenes from daily life, this time in Tokyo, changing camera and adding the date on his photographs, but still representing himself in the images. This volume reproduces for the first time in book form all of the photographs that make up both original series. It charts a turning point in Fukase’s work — an artist grappling with his medium and with a compulsion to share his personal experiences with his audience. The photographs are accompanied by a text by Masako Toda, who offers a contextual and historical consideration of Fukase’s œuvre.

About the Author:

Masako Toda is a photo historian, author, and curator of Japanese photography. She holds a masters from The University of Tokyo. Toda is a lecturer at Musashino Art University, Tokyo College of Photography, among others. In 2006, she was awarded the incentive award by the Japan Society for Arts and History of Photography. Toda's field of expertise is the history of modernism as well as postwar Japanese photography.

An Archeology of Time

There is more to numbers than sums; they can also conceal histories, too. In this case, world-famous architectural history. For five years the renowned Neue Nationalgalerie (New National Gallery), designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was closed to the public for renovation. Nevertheless, the photographer Michael Wesely was able to accommodate “four guests” inside the iconic building: four cameras, each one pointing in a different direction, were installed on the ceiling. Every day they took between 360 and 730 pictures with an exposure time of 90 seconds each. Edited into bewitching montages, this fascinating synopsis allows readers to envision the building’s metamorphosis as it was undergoing renovations. The long exposure time is an aesthetic coup, for ephemeral, restless, rapid movements contrast with the still, timeless quality of the architecture, presenting a sophisticated interplay of identity and change.

This book is published on the occasion of the re-opening of the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, August 2021. It is a slightly altered special edition of the original numbered edition of April 2021.

About the Author:

The photographer Michael Wesely (*1963) is a celebrated master of the long exposure. His precise approach to this photographic technique, tailored to each object, brought him world renown. His unique aesthetic can be found in numerous exhibitions and collections around the globe. He lives in Berlin.
