Explore the works of one of Hollywood's most renowned filmakers - the iconic Clint Eastwood.

Clint Eastwood is Hollywood’s elder statesman and its conscience. He is the standard by which other films and filmmakers are judged. He represents both classical Hollywood and an entirely modern, uncompromising and unfussy directorial presence.

There are those who adore him as a cowboy, a superstar, the rugged, unyielding yet introspective face of American machismo. There are those who read him as a great American auteur fashioning uncompromising, fascinating, intellectual films about his country, about life, about whatever the hell takes his fancy.

No single figure in all of Hollywood, operates so freely outside of the strictures of commercial pressure. And yet, or perhaps that is because, he makes hit after hit.

Separation of actor and director is almost impossible. They are intimately related, cross pollinating, but in the latter half of his career he has come to be viewed as one of the great American artists. While drawing connections from his wider work as an actor, and those who have influenced him, it is his identity as a director that this book will celebrate.

This is not a career — it is a landscape.

About the Author:

Ian Nathan, who lives and works in London, is one of the UK's best-known film writers. He is the author of nine previous books, including Alien Vault, the best-selling history of Ridley Scott's masterpiece, Terminator Vault, Tarantino, Tim Burton, The Coen Brothers and Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson and the Making of Middle-earth. He is the former editor and executive editor of Empire, the world's biggest movie magazine, where he remains a contributing editor. He also regularly contributes to The Times, The Independent, The Mail on Sunday, Cahiers Du Cinema and the Discovering Film documentary series on Sky Arts.

An illustrated guide to the history and symbolism of colours, as used in artworks throughout the ages, from prehistory to the present day.

Colour, which has the power to impart meaning or express emotion, has fascinated humans for millennia. This comprehensive, illustrated guide demonstrates how colour ― through different periods, cultures, and artistic movements ― has been used in art: from the black, red, and white pigments first used in prehistoric cave paintings to the muted tones of Gabonese Punu masks replete with spiritual significance, or from Andy Warhol’s Gold Marilyn Monroe with its flashy hues borrowed from the advertising world to the signature “outrenoir” (beyond black) of the late Pierre Soulages.

From oil painting to optical art, this international history of colour unfurls over thirty major periods in the development of colour in the arts, elucidating their characteristics, key works, and exponents. The symbolism given to a particular color and how such associations have evolved over time is revealed. A gallery of sixty works that are remarkable for their extraordinary use of colour includes the explosion of light emanating from Joseph Mallord William Turner’s Light and Colour (Goethe’s Theory), the fleeting moments of dawn depicted with broken brushstrokes and colorful intensity in Monet’s Impression, Sunrise, and the acidulous tones of David Hockney’s portrait My Parents. The final chapter examines the materials and techniques used to achieve chromatic effects. Complete with extensive cross-references, this accessible guide allows readers to discover more about a particular movement, theme, or technique, and offers an enlightening and polychromatic overview to the history of colour in art.

About the Author:

Camille Viéville is an art historian and coauthor of The Trouble with Women Artists: Reframing the History of Art (Flammarion, 2019).

John Gage

Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A groundbreaking, award-winning analysis of colour in Western culture, from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century by one of the most foremost authors on the subject.

What does the language of colour tell us? Where does one colour begin and another end? Is it a radiant visual stimulus, an intangible function of light, or a material substance to be moulded and arrayed? Colour is fundamental to art, yet so diverse that it has hardly ever been studied in a comprehensive way. Art historian John Gage considers every conceivable aspect of the subject in this groundbreaking analysis of colour in Western culture, from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century.

Gage describes the first theories of colour, articulated by Greek philosophers, and subsequent attempts by the Romans and their Renaissance disciples to organize it systematically or endow it with symbolic power. He unfolds its religious significance and its use in heraldry, as well as how Renaissance artists approached colour with the help of alchemists. He explores the analysis of the spectrum undertaken by Newton and continued in the nineteenth century by artists such as Seurat, traces the influence of Goethe's colour theory, and considers the extraordinary theories and practices that attempted to unite colour and music, or make colour into an entirely abstract language of its own.

The first-ever undertaking to suggest answers to many perennial questions about the role of colour in Western art and thought, this study throws fresh light on the hidden meanings of many familiar masterpieces.

__________

John Gage’s groundbreaking analysis of colour has been transforming our perceptions for more than three decades. Indispensable to anyone fascinated by art, psychology and history, this remarkable book considers every conceivable aspect of colour theory in Western culture.

From Roman symbolism to Bauhaus and beyond, this new edition, now featuring full colour illustrations throughout, will continue to serve as a pillar of visual arts scholarship.

About the Author:

John Gage was an acknowledged international authority on the history of art and colour, and wrote many books on the subject, including Colour and MeaningColour in Art and the award-winning Colour and Culture, all published by Thames & Hudson. He was Head of the Department of History of Art at Cambridge University from 1992 to 1995.

John Gage, Kelly Grovier

A wide-ranging and engaging introduction to the place and power of colour in life and art by John Gage, author of the award-winning Colour and Culture.

The complex phenomenon of colour has received detailed attention from the perspectives of physics, chemistry, physiology, psychology, linguistics and philosophy. However, the people who work most closely with colour – artists – have rarely been canvassed for their opinions on this mysterious subject.

John Gage sets out to address this omission by focusing on the thoughts and practices of artists. Colour in Art is concerned with the history of colour, but is not itself a history; instead each chapter develops a theme from a different scientific discipline, as seen from the viewpoint of such diverse artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Vincent van Gogh, Sonia Delaunay, Bridget Riley and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri. Drawing on examples through the ages, from ancient times to the present, the many topics covered include flags, synaesthesia, Theosophy, theatre design, film, chromotherapy and chromophobia.

Featuring a new foreword by art writer Kelly Grovier outlining contemporary developments in the study of colour, and an updated bibliography, this new edition of this classic text offers a wide-ranging and engaging introduction to the place and power of colour in life and art.

About the Author:

John Gage an acknowledged international authority on the history of art and colour, and wrote many books on the subject, including Colour and Meaning and the award-winning Colour and Culture, both published by Thames & Hudson. He was Head of the Department of History of Art at Cambridge University from 1992 to 1995. Kelly Grovier is a feature writer for BBC Culture and the author of several acclaimed studies on art, including A New Way of Seeing: The History of Art in 57 Works (2018) and The Art of Colour (2023), both published by Thames & Hudson

The first chronological global history of comics, from 1968 through to the present day

The story begins in 1968, a key year in comics’ shift from being driven by commercial potential into a means of self-expression respected not just as entertainment but also as art. The book traces comics’ evolution up to the emergence of today's global, digital scene and the medium’s likely future.

Robert Crumb and Gabrielle Bell, Jack Kirby and Alan Moore, Moebius, Yumiko Oshima and Osamu Tezuka are just a few of the hundreds of artists and writers included – making it unprecedented in its global reach.

Featuring the best-known artists and writers – from Jack Kirby, Hergé and Moebius to Katsuhiro Otomo, Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore – Comics also introduces readers to some creators they may not yet have encountered, such as Andrea Pazienza, the Fort Thunder collective and Fabrice Neaud.
