André Darlington and Tenaya Darlington are the co-authors of Booze & Vinyl, The New Cocktail Hour, and Turner Classic Movies: Movie Night Menus. André is a drinks, food, and lifestyle writer based in Philadelphia. He is a former restaurant critic and award-winning wine and spirits columnist. Talamon saw it all during the golden age of soul, R&B, and funk. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, this young African American photographer from Los Angeles found himself backstage with an all-access pass to the heart of the music scene. He caught his first big break landing a position as a staff photographer at SOUL Newspaper in LA in the early 1970s, just as soul, R&B, and funk were becoming part of the mainstream. He captured the rehearsals and sound checks, recording sessions and costume fittings, the quiet reflective moments and life on the road, and, of course, the wild photo shoots and memorable performances. These photographs define an era famed for its glamour, fabulous fashions, and utter devotion to the groove.

Los Angeles–born Bruce W. Talamon (1949) has been a fixture in the film industry as a stills photographer for 39 years, after a prolific career capturing R&B royalty in the electrifying 1970s. His photographs were used as key poster art in numerous ad campaigns for all the major Hollywood studios. A contract photographer for Time magazine in the 1980s, his work has also appeared in People, Rolling Stone, Ebony, Vanity Fair, and NPR. He is also the author of Bob Marley: Spirit Dancer.

Reuel Golden is the former editor of the British Journal of Photography and the Photography editor at TASCHEN. About the Author:

Ed Caraeff is a name recognized by anybody who is anybody in the music industry. A photographer, illustrator and graphic designer, he has directed art for, photographed, and designed hundreds of record album covers from 1967 to 1982 for numerous artists, including The Stooges, Elton John, Steely Dan, Carly Simon, Three Dog Night, Tom Waits and Dolly Parton. His photography has appeared on the cover of four issues of Rolling Stone and boasts a rightful place in the permanent collection at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Chivalry is a flower no less indigenous to the soil of Japan than cherry blossom” are the opening words to Inazo Nitobe’s Bushido: The Soul of Japan. 

It was 1900 and Inazo, a Japanese academic living in the USA, had been prompted to write the book after an American professor had wondered how the Japanese imparted moral education on their children if schools didn’t offer any religious instruction. About the Author:

Born in 1862, Inazo Nitobe began learning English at the age of nine. He entered Tokyo Imperial University before studying politics and international relations at John Hopkins University. Nitobe taught at Sapporo Agricultural College from 1891 to 1897, before moving to the USA, where Bushido: The Soul of Japan was published in 1900. From 1903 to 1919 he held a professorship at Kyoto Imperial University. Following the end of World War I, he attended the Versailles Peace Conference in 1918, then became an under secretary of the League of Nations. He was also the chairman of the Institute of Pacific Relations from 1929 until his death in 1933. Nitobe published many scholarly books as well as books for general readers.
