Let’s Get It On. Behind the scenes of the 1970s music explosion with Bruce W. Talamon

Talamon saw it all during the golden age of soul, R&B, and funk. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, this young African American photographer from Los Angeles found himself backstage with an all-access pass to the heart of the music scene. He caught his first big break landing a position as a staff photographer at SOUL Newspaper in LA in the early 1970s, just as soul, R&B, and funk were becoming part of the mainstream. He captured the rehearsals and sound checks, recording sessions and costume fittings, the quiet reflective moments and life on the road, and, of course, the wild photo shoots and memorable performances. These photographs define an era famed for its glamour, fabulous fashions, and utter devotion to the groove.

Including close to 300 photographs from 1972 to 1982, the extensive Talamon archives are presented in full detail for the first time. Whether you’re a diehard soul fan or a thrilled newcomer to the aesthetic magic of the 1970s, the collection exudes the infectious spirit of an exuberant age. The photographer

Los Angeles–born Bruce W. Talamon (1949) has been a fixture in the film industry as a stills photographer for 39 years, after a prolific career capturing R&B royalty in the electrifying 1970s. His photographs were used as key poster art in numerous ad campaigns for all the major Hollywood studios. A contract photographer for Time magazine in the 1980s, his work has also appeared in People, Rolling Stone, Ebony, Vanity Fair, and NPR. He is also the author of Bob Marley: Spirit Dancer.

Reuel Golden is the former editor of the British Journal of Photography and the Photography editor at TASCHEN. Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his work have attained a legendary status in our collective consciousness. About the Author:

Bryan Adams, born in 1959 in Ontario, divides his time between music and photography. Adams has photographed for magazines including Interview, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, and British and German Vogue. In 2003 he founded Zoo Magazine for which he has received a Goldene Feder Award. In 2006 Adams was honored with a German Lead Award for his series of photographs of Mickey Rourke. Adams’ exhibitions include those held at the Saatchi Gallery and National Portrait Gallery in London, and Haus der Kunst in Munich. About the Author:

Ed Caraeff is a name recognized by anybody who is anybody in the music industry. A photographer, illustrator and graphic designer, he has directed art for, photographed, and designed hundreds of record album covers from 1967 to 1982 for numerous artists, including The Stooges, Elton John, Steely Dan, Carly Simon, Three Dog Night, Tom Waits and Dolly Parton. His photography has appeared on the cover of four issues of Rolling Stone and boasts a rightful place in the permanent collection at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Born in 1862, Inazo Nitobe began learning English at the age of nine. He entered Tokyo Imperial University before studying politics and international relations at John Hopkins University. From 1903 to 1919 he held a professorship at Kyoto Imperial University. About the Author:

Preston Blair (1910–1995) was a native Californian who studied art at the Otis Art Institute, as well as illustration under Pruett Carter at Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts). As a member of the California Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society in New York, he exhibited work all over the country. Preston was a fine artist during the early days of full-length feature animation. For the Disney production Fantasia, he designed and animated the hippos in "The Dance of the Hours." He also animated Mickey Mouse in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, portions of the classic film Pinocchio, and the famous scene in Bambi when the owl talks about love in his "twitterpated" speech. At MGM, Preston directed Barney Bear short films, and he was well known as the designer and animator of one of Tex Avery's epic shorts Red Hot Riding Hood. Preston later moved to Connecticut, where he produced television commercials, educational films, and cartoons, including The Flintstones. Before he passed away, he worked as an inventor of interactive TV programs, such as teaching reading through animation and virtual reality games featuring full-sized animated opponents.

About the Author:

Suzanna Ivanic is Lecturer in Early Modern European History and member of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Kent. Her research focuses on lived religion and material and visual culture in Central Europe. Recent publications include articles on amulets, religious objects and the domestic sphere, and a book on Cosmos and Materiality in Early Modern Prague.
