About the Author

Judy Sund is Professor of Modern European Art and Art of the Americas at the City University of New York. In addition to constructions of the exotic in Euro-American visual culture, her research interests include artists' responses to texts (from Biblical psalms and parables to Naturalist novels) and intersections of high art and popular culture (world's fairs, Hollywood movies, advertising campaigns, fashion). She has published books and essays on Vincent van Gogh (including Van Gogh, in Phaidon's Art & Ideas series) as well as articles on Antoine Watteau, Mary Cassatt, Fernand Léger, Frida Kahlo, and twentieth-century appropriations of Pre-Columbian artefacts.

Born in England in 1969, Ashley Bassie is an independent art historian, specialised in German Art. After graduating from the University of Manchester, the author conducted her research across Europe. She published several works creating a link between art and politics and centres her research on the first quarter of the twentieth century.

We find luminous streaks from Wassily Kandinsky, and the sickly hues of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the futurist facets of Franz Marc, and a partial Impressionist throwback in the gaudy dabs of Emil Nolde. We walk into seedy bars with bloated old men and then enter a claustrophobic yellow room occupied by an awkwardly posed nude. We are crushed in a cacophony of city sound and smoke and then left alone with woods, a lake, and silence.

The author:

Dietmar Elger studied art history, history, and literature at the University of Hamburg. In 1984/85, he was secretary of Gerhard Richter’s studio and between 1989 and 2006 curator for painting and sculpture at the Sprengel Museum, Hanover. He has organized numerous exhibitions on modern and contemporary art and has directed the Gerhard Richter Archive at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden since 2006. For TASCHEN he has authored the volumes Expressionism, Dadaism, and Abstract Art.

The authors:

Italian producer and songwriter Giorgio Moroder helped create electronic dance music, and has worked with Donna Summer, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Barbra Streisand, and many others. He also founded Musicland Studios in Munich, once used by legendary acts like Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Elton John.

Alessandro Benedetti began collecting coloured and unusual records in 1981, and now has 8,000 discs, including 1,200 coloured vinyl discs. In 1998 his collection won recognition in The Guinness Book of Records. His dream is to open a record museum so he can share his collection with the public.

The contributor:

Peter Bastine has been a DJ, record seller, and concert organizer. From 1977 until 1998 he collected every kind of picture disc; since then, mostly historical 78rpm records. Today his collection comprises around 8,000 picture discs, and has been the subject of several European exhibitions.

Peter Carl Fabergé (1846–1920) is deservedly the most famous creator of the stunning gold, silver, and jewel-studded treasures of imperial Russia. Perhaps because of the popularity of his Easter eggs, Fabergé’s skilled competitors have been largely overlooked. Fabergé and the Russian Master Goldsmiths tells their story and features their masterpieces as well as Fabergé’s. The exquisite objects created by goldsmith and jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé and his studio in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the aristocracy and nobility of imperial Russia are considered to be some of the most refined examples of the jeweler's art of any age. Richly illustrated with some 600 photographs, the volume documents an important collection bequeathed in 1947 to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by Lillian Thomas Pratt, of Fredericksburg, Va., the wife of General Motors executive John Lee Pratt. Her collection, assembled between 1933 and 1946, comprised several hundred creations by the Faberge workshops and by other Russian imperial jewelers. These exquisite, marvelously crafted objects, range from the majestic jeweled imperial eggs to delicate jeweled flowers in vases to diamond-encrusted icons and tiaras, to animal figures nimbly carved from precious stone.

About the Author:

Géza von Habsburg is an internationally known author and authority on Faberge who has served as curator and organizer for a number of Fabergé exhibitions in the United States and abroad, among them Fabergé, Jeweler to the Tsars (1986-87) at Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich, Germany, and Fabergé in America, which was shown at VMFA and 4 other U.S. venues (1996-97), and Faberge, Imperial Court Jeweler, which was shown in St. Petersburg, Paris, and London (1993-94). He has written or co-written 9 books on Faberge and related topics. Von Habsburg is the grandson of King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony and great-great-grandson of Emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria. He is currently the curatorial director of the London-based Fabergé Company.

As two of the most acclaimed fantasy artists working today, Boris and Julie have produced art for album covers, trading cards, posters and calendars for (in Boris' case) 30 years – as well as having 15 books of their work published under the Paper Tiger imprint.

During their careers Boris and Julie have become most famous for their paintings of the female form and this book is a collection of their greatest fantasy women.

Together, Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller are Faile. Although their art has its roots on the street, their work clearly demonstrates that street art no longer solely belongs there. Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller have been working with wood since they founded Faile in 1999. Now, Faile: Works on Wood showcases their exploration of wood as an integral material in their practice from past to present.
