About the Author:

Cale Waddacor is a South African artist, musician, photographer and documentarian. Skateboarding through his home city, Johannesburg, he developed a passion for urban art and graffiti. He began photographing street artworks to document the country’s rising street art scene and launched the website Graffiti South Africa in 2011, which was made into a book of the same name in 2014.

A unique typographical sourcebook featuring over 150 specially designed, original alphabets exclusive to this book

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets.

Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries to show the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world-renowned, such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), and Hera (Germany); others are lesser-known or only now starting to emerge.

Each artist received the same instructions: design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results encompass not just street art but sketches, sculpture, digital art, and photography.

About the Author:

Claudia Walde, aka MadC, is a world-renowned graffiti artist, muralist, designer and writer. She was born in Bautzen, Germany, and is most known for her large-scale, outdoor artistic paintings. MadC painted her first graffiti piece in 1996, being 16 years old. She studied at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle and Central Saint Martins College in London. MadC carries a master's degree in graphic design. She is the author of Sticker City: Paper Graffiti Art.

Alun Graves is Senior Curator, Ceramics and Glass 1900–now, in the Department of Decorative Art and Sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He has written widely on 20th and 21st-century British ceramics and sculpture, contributing to a variety of journals, collected papers and exhibition catalogues. He has curated many exhibitions and displays, including Simon Carroll: Expressionist Potter (2014–15), Barnaby Barford: The Tower of Babel (2015), and Alison Britton: Content and Form (2016).

About the Author:

Lafcadio Hearn was one of the earliest Western writers to publish stories and essays about supernatural Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1890 and fell in love with the country and its people. After marrying a samurai's daughter, he became a Japanese citizen and changed his name to Yakumo Koizumi. He began publishing books on Japan in 1894, soon becoming known as the great interpreter of all things Japanese to the West.

Yei Theodora Ozaki was born in Victorian England to a Japanese father and an English mother. Lao Tzu, or Laozi, is an honorific title meaning ‘Old Master’, and it is unlikely that the Tao Te Ching or Daodejing was written by one person, but if he did exist, his name was Li Er. Traditionally written in the sixth century BCE, there are a number of ancient text sources that have been used to compile this version.
