Alphonse Mucha is known largely for having originated Art Nouveau when his poster of the actress Sarah Bernhardt became a legendary icon of the movement.

For those posters Mucha created a distinctive style – “le style Mucha” – characterised by harmonious compositions, sinuous forms, organic lines and a muted palette, which became synonymous with the newly emerging decorative style of the time – Art Nouveau. By the time of the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, Mucha had become a leading figure in this decorative art movement, who defined the look of the era.

The catalogue explores the development of Mucha’s career and overall achievements as a multifaceted and visionary artist. It is divided into six sections, highlighting Mucha’s personality as Bohemian; picture maker for people; cosmopolitan; mystic; patriot and philosopher.

About the Author:

Tomoko Sato studied History of Art and Architecture at the University of Reading, and Museology at the University of Manchester. Formerly Curator at the Barbican Art Gallery in London, she has been Curator of the Mucha Foundation since 2007. Professor Thomas Schnalke is director of the Berliner Medizinhistorischen Museums der Charité.

Dame Sue Black is a forensic anthropologist, anatomist and academic. Black is a Fellow and President of the Royal Anthropological Institute and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Society of Biology, and is the lifetime Professor of Anatomy for the Royal Scottish Academy. She was awarded an OBE in 2001 for her work in Kosovo and a DBE in 2016 for her contributions to forensic anthropology. She is also a recipient of the Fletcher of Saltoun award for her contribution to Scottish Culture, the Jephcott gold medal for scientific advancement, the Lucy Mair medal for humanitarian assistance and the Anatomical Society gold medal for her distinguished contribution to the field of anatomy.

The Ancient Egyptians used a hieroglyphic writing system that still resonates today for its graphic representation of things, people, pharaohs and concepts.

These hieroglyphics were discovered by adventurers and archaeologists in temples, tombs and on papyrus documents, telling of the everyday life, religion and history of this 5,000-year-old civilisation.
Some of the symbols were simple but represented something with a wider significance, such as the eye of Horus; other logograms might represent an animal, such as a snake, elephant or lion; while others, such as the Ba symbol of a bird with a human head, represented the human soul with the ability to travel to the afterlife using wings.
