A prominent member of both the New Leipzig and Tacheles schools, Andreas Schiller is celebrated for ambitious work that explores symbolism and mass production in the computer age. His most recent book, Global Backup II, distills the essence of the two series that brought him wide acclaim: “Big Apple,” a collection of thousands of paintings of a single apple, and "Curiosities of the West,” which consists of iconic images presented in a repetitive pattern that renders them both absurd and banal.

The father of modern jewellery, the golden engineer, the King of Bling… These are just some of the epithets assigned to Andrew Grima, the British genius who marched in the vanguard of a 1960s London-based movement that created a new vocabulary for jewellery design.

Jeweller to the royals and the jet set, to the rule makers and the tastemakers, Grima was a feted celebrity who appeared on talk shows, in Pathé newsreels and in advertisements for Canada Dry. He won The Queen’s Award for Export, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize for Elegant Design and a record 11 De Beers Diamonds International Awards (the ‘Oscars’ of the jewellery world).

This book illuminates the career of a man who participated in a golden age of British creativity. It contains a dazzling array of never-before-seen sketches, designs and photographs from the Grima archives and includes a sparkling preface from the doyen of jewellery experts, TV celebrity Geoffrey Munn. A must-buy publication for art and jewellery lovers alike.

“Since discovering the work of Andrew Grima, I have not only become a collector of his exquisite creations, I have also become one of the many to be inspired by his unique and inimitable designs. Each piece of jewellery, each watch, each object is a sculpture.” – Marc Jacobs

“His work, his style, is completely identifiable, it’s unique.” – James Taffin de Givenchy

- The first major monograph on Andrew Grima, arguably Britain's greatest jewellery maestro
- A glittering retrospective that encompasses Andrew Grima's life, career and legacy
- Detailed pictures demonstrate Grima's impeccable artistry as a modernist designer
- Preface by TV celebrity and Antiques Roadshow expert, Geoffrey Munn

About the Author:

William Grant is the husband of Andrew Grima's second wife Jojo, and step-father to their daughter Francesca. He therefore has unique access to the family history and has thoroughly investigated the verbal and written testimony about Grima, as well as the brand's extensive archives.

The most private of artists was beguiled by a hardscrabble farm and its residents down the road from his studio, revealing some of his most personal friendships, and yielding some of his most iconic paintings.

Andrew Wyeth first discovered the haunting beauty of the farm owned by German immigrants Karl and Anna Kuerner on his boyhood rambles in Pennsylvania’s bucolic Brandywine River Valley, and it would captivate him for the rest of his life, appearing as subject of more than one thousand landscapes, interiors, and portraits. As traced throughout this volume, just what Wyeth uncovered beneath the farm’s austere facade is key to understanding his singular artistic vision.

This intimate look at Wyeth’s decades-long connection to Kuerner Farm and the people there reveals not only the source of many of the artist’s most deeply resonant paintings but also the secrets that have given his deceptively simple art its mysterious pull on the popular imagination for generations. As Wyeth became one of the country’s most celebrated artists, he continued to return to the farm, the Kuerners, and to the enigmatic Helga Testorf, creating timeless portraits from an experience of deep looking and charting a way toward unearthing from the ordinary, the extraordinary.

About the Authors:

William L. Coleman is the Wyeth Foundation Curator and Director of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum of Art. Allison C. Slaby is curator at Reynolda House Museum of American Art. Karen Baumgartner is collection manager of the Andrew & Betsy Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum of Art. James Welling is a contemporary American artist and photographer.

Presenting recently rediscovered drawings, Life and Death explores what it means for an artist to picture their own death, in both the context of Wyeth’s late career and contemporary American art.

This volume presents for the first time a recently rediscovered series of pencil drawings from the early 1990s, through which Andrew Wyeth imagined his own funeral. Chapters by leading art historians explore the significance of picturing one’s own death in both the context of Wyeth’s late career and contemporary American art. The book connects the funeral series to Wyeth’s decades-long engagement with death as an artistic subject in painting, his relationships with the models depicted, and his use of drawing as an expressive and exploratory medium. It further inserts Wyeth’s work into a larger conversation about mortality and self-portraiture that developed in American art since the 1960s, and includes works by Duane Michals, Andy Warhol, David Wojnarowicz, George Tooker, Janaina Tschäpe and Mario Moore. While his contemporaries posed a variety of existential questions in picturing their own passing, those that interrogate the universality of death as a human experience have become especially urgent in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the national reckoning with racial inequality that emerged in 2020. Andrew Wyeth: Life and Death thus addresses ideas about loss, grief, vulnerability and (im)mortality that pervade the current moment.

The rich context behind one of Andrew Wyeth’s most beloved and mysterious late paintings.

Perhaps nowhere else is Andrew Wyeth’s highly distinctive style more palpable, or moving, than in Snow Hill. His masterful tempera painting of 1989 provides a visual and poetic summary of the Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, residents who had provided artistic inspiration at key points in Wyeth’s career. With the figures depicted in a snowy landscape high above Kuerner Farm, a property of great personal significance to the painter, this enigmatic composition resonates with an elegiac air. Among Wyeth’s most popular works, Snow Hill in some ways encapsulates the spirit of his entire career. James H. Duff, a close acquaintance of the artist for more than three decades, invites an expansive reading of the work, including the wide-ranging art historical influences on this singular American artist.

The magic and mastery of anime springs to life in this gorgeous celebration of the genre

A uniquely powerful form of artistic expression, anime has embraced complex and provocative ideas since its inception in the mid twentieth century.

This dynamic and wide-ranging book explores eighty key themes of the genre, from wars to natural disasters, nature to ecology, childhood to magic, dystopias to fables. It looks at more than one hundred masterpieces of Japanese animation, including Akira, Ghost in the Shell, One Piece, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies and Howl’s Moving Castle, to show how practitioners consistently balance tradition with modernity and how anime’s distinct style has influenced other forms of media such as video games, comic books and live-action films.

Covering an enormous range of talent — from Isao Takahata, Katsuhiro Ôtomo, and Makoto Shinkai to Studio Ghibli and Mamoru Oshii — it demonstrates how anime makes room for limitless creativity. Unfettered by the physical constraints of nature’s laws, these artists realize our deepest emotions and our wildest dreams.

Nathalie Bittinger is a senior lecturer in film studies at the University of Strasbourg, France. She has published several books on Asian cinema.

From the artist behind the critically acclaimed, award-winning, New York Times #1 bestselling graphic novel Logicomix comes a graphic novel about the life and legacy of Aristotle, the polymath who became one of the founding figures of modern thought

Little is known about the early life of Aristotle, who stands as a cultural cornerstone of modern thought and scholarship. Alecos Papadatos, the artist behind the critically acclaimed, award-winning, bestselling graphic novel Logicomix, and Tassos Apostolidis, an author and teacher, team up to bring his story to life, following the trail of clues to paint a picture of the great man and his philosophy.

The son of a renowned Macedonian physician, Aristotle pursues his studies in Athens and becomes one of Plato’s favorite disciples. A great scholar, he even serves as Alexander the Great, Ptolemy, and Cassander’s personal tutor.

For many, that would be the high point of their career, but Aristotle goes on to found his own school, the Lyceum. There, he transmits his knowledge and passion to any student wishing to embark on an intellectual and philosophical journey.

Most of his works that have endured to this day are from this crucial time, thought to be lecture aids for his students. The fact that these were not likely intended for publication and yet have had such an astounding influence on every school of Western thought speaks to the monumental legacy that Papadatos and Apostolidis carefully reconstruct in this compelling and informative graphic novel.

About the Authors:

Alecos Papadatos was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1959. After pursuing economics studies in his home country, he moved to France, where he changed career directions entirely in order to devote himself to animation. In 1990, he moved back to Greece with his wife and collaborator, Annie Di Donna, where they founded the production studio Spicy Toons, active throughout Europe. In 2003, he began work on the Logicomix graphic novel, published initially in 2008 by Bloomsbury. Following the great success of that project, he published Democracy, also with Bloomsbury, in 2015. His work is internationally acclaimed, and he hosts workshops and masterclasses in Greece, Turkey, Poland, France, and the United Kingdom.

Tassos Apostolidis was born in 1947 in Thessaloniki, Greece, where he studied mathematics. Aided by over 40 years of experience teaching high school, he has written many accessible and engaging books and graphic novels based on works of classical Greek literature by figures such as Aristophanes, Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aesop. He also writes plays, newspaper columns and humor pieces, and stand-up comedy shows. Apostolidis is a member of several writers' organizations and regularly hosts workshops, classes, and conferences on subjects such as drawing, caricature, and comics.

Plan B instead of Planet B

Neither naïve escapism into virtual worlds, nor the technological utopia of space colonization will save us from facing the big, uncomfortable questions. With this year’s theme Welcome to Planet B, Ars Electronica is an invitation to take part in an exciting thought experiment: What if we had already mastered the great challenges of the 21st century? How would we live (together)? And most importantly: What would our path there have looked like?

We will need every bit of technology, but the biggest innovation project has to be ourselves, our ability to rise to the challenge as a global community — a reinvention of humanity! Planet B is not the second chance for another place where we can continue as before, it is the cipher for the indispensable, new, and in many forms completely different life and action on this only planet that exists for us.

A survey of the full breadth and complexity of Mexican art history, ranging widely across genres and offering new interpretations of painting, sculpture, architecture, prints and photographs

This new interpretive history of Mexican art and architecture from the Spanish Conquest to the early decades of the twenty-first century is the most comprehensive introduction to the subject in fifty years.

The author ranges widely across media and genres, offering new readings of paintings, murals, sculptures, buildings, prints and photographs. He interprets major works by such famous artists as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, but also discusses less familiar figures who were equally important in the construction of national identity.

The author draws on recent scholarship to examine crucial issues of race, class and gender, including an exploration of the work of indigenous artists during the colonial period, and of women artists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Throughout, Oles shows how artists in Mexico participated in local and international developments, and highlights the important role played by Mexicans in the art world of the last five centuries.
