This book references all the artist's periods and media: sculpture (plaster, bronze), paintings, drawings, prints… It will allow a comprehensive view of Alberto Giacometti's creation, from early works to the surrealist period, from the return to figuration to his work from models, and to the invention of the great post-war icons. Over 230 works are represented, including several masterpieces such as Spoon Woman (1927), The Invisible Object (1934-35), Woman with Chariot (1945), The Nose (1947), and Walking Man (1960).

Giacometti’s works are separated into fourteen original sections revealing the themes favoured by the artist - the representation of the head, the face, the female body, etc. The book is punctuated by seven essays written by leading art historians who dwell on the detours and questions that mark Alberto Giacometti's creative process, but also allow the reader to discover his relationship to loneliness, melancholy, and his hard work with his models: his wife Annette, his brother Diego, his close friends. This catalogue aims to introduce the reader to another Giacometti, the one who experiments with the limits of sculpture, and the formidable painter who also practices, alongside the portrait, the genres of landscape or still life.

A comprehensive survey of the work of the legendary Swiss artist, this book illustrates and examines more than 100 of his sculptures, paintings, drawings, and prints

This lavishly illustrated retrospective traces the early and midcareer development of the preeminent Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966), examining the emergence of his distinct figural style through works including a series of walking men, elongated standing women, and numerous busts. Rare paintings and drawings from his formative period show the significance of landscape in Giacometti’s work, while also revealing the influence of the postimpressionist painters that surrounded his father, the artist Giovanni Giacometti. Other areas of inquiry on which Alberto Giacometti casts new light are his studio practice ― amply illustrated with photographs ― his obsessive focus on depicting the human head, his collaborations with poets and writers, and his development of the walking man sculpture, thanks to numerous drawings, many of which have never been shown. Original essays by modern art and Giacometti specialists shed new light on era-defining sculptural masterpieces, including the Walking Man, the Nose, and the Chariot, or on key aspects of his work, such as the significance of surrealism, his drawing practice, or the question of space.

Before the rise of Pop Art proper, Alex Katz developed an iconic style of figurative painting in the early 1960s ―  influenced by film, television, and billboard advertising. Seemingly detached and incredibly stylish, he created portraits of the New York scene as well as idyllic landscapes. Printmaking plays an equally central role in Katz’s work. He uses lithographs, etchings, silkscreens, woodcuts and linocuts to reproduce, reflect and further reduce his bold aesthetic, while retaining the radiant color characteristic for his paintings. Since the first edition in 2011, Katz has almost doubled his output of prints ― this timely new edition includes his complete prints, cutout editions, artists’ books, and also lists his works of applied art like book illustrations and public art projects. New essays and interviews with the artist give profound insights into the work of one of the foremost American artists of the present.

This eagerly awaited first monograph focuses on Alexander Ponomarev, one of Russia's most eminent and singular contemporary artists.

Alexander Ponomarev is one of Russia's most widely known contemporary artists, renowned both at home and abroad. In 2014, he was featured in Time magazine as one of the 100 Leading Global Thinkers thanks to the vast range of devices he employs to express his ideas, such as drawings, vast, complex installations, and a variety of technologies. He also captures some of the planet's most extreme and least accessible landscapes, symbolizing what he views as a world that is "culturally and morally adrift."

The themes he tackles are those he considers of critical relevance to today's world: the rapport between science and art, the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic, the retrieval of ancient engineering traditions vs. today's advanced technologies, and the crucial and urgent issue of climate change.

The volume includes two ample introductory essays describing his position in the Russian context of art production over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and his roots in the artistic and humanist culture of the early modern era (Vitruvius, Leonardo, Titian, and the major geographical explorations, etc.).

About the Author:

Silvia Burini is director of the Center for the Studies of Russian Arts (CSAR) at Ca' Foscari University in Venice. Giuseppe Barbieri is full professor of history of modern art at Ca' Foscari University. He has authored and curated over forty books and organized numerous exhibitions.

Ali Banisadr's first major monograph delves into the Iranian painter's influences and practice.

Preeminent Iranian-American artist Ali Banisadr's canvases depict a complex swirl of action and abstracted figuration across a stagelike picture plane. Varied histories inform these paintings, ranging from the artist's synesthesia, to Persian miniatures, to the multi-figure works of Brueghel and Bosch, and the gestural imaginations of Willem de Kooning and Max Ernst.

Born in Tehran in 1976, Ali Banisadr grew up during the Islamic revolution and the eight-year Iran-Iraq War. In 1988, he and his family emigrated to Turkey and then to California. In 2000, he moved to New York City where he currently lives and works.

Phoebe Hoban
ID: 13791
Издательство: David Zwirner Books

Phoebe Hoban’s definitive biography of the renowned American painter Alice Neel tells the unforgettable story of an artist whose life spanned the twentieth century, from women’s suffrage through the Depression, McCarthyism, the civil rights movement, the sexual revolution, and feminism. Throughout her life and work, Neel constantly challenged convention, ultimately gaining an enduring place in the canon.

Alice Neel’s stated goal was to “capture the zeitgeist.” Born into a proper Victorian family at the turn of the twentieth century, Neel reached voting age during suffrage. A quintessential bohemian, she was one of the first artists participating in the Easel Project of the Works Progress Administration, documenting the challenges of life during the Depression. An avowed humanist, Neel chose to paint the world around her, sticking to figurative work even during the peak of abstract expressionism. Neel never ceased pushing the envelope, creating a unique chronicle of her time.

Neel was fiercely democratic in selecting her subjects, who represent an extraordinarily diverse population ― from such legendary figures as Joe Gould to her Spanish Harlem neighbours in the 1940s, the art critic Meyer Shapiro, Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling, Andy Warhol, and major figures of the labour, civil rights and feminist movements ― producing an indelible portrait of twentieth-century America. By dictating her own terms, Neel was able to transcend such personal tragedy as the death of her infant daughter, Santillana, a nervous breakdown and suicide attempts, and the separation from her second child, Isabetta. After spending much of her career in relative obscurity, Neel finally received a major museum retrospective in 1974, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York.

In this first paperback edition of the authoritative biography of Alice Neel, which serves also as a cultural history of twentieth-century New York, the author Phoebe Hoban documents the tumultuous life of the artist in vivid detail, creating a portrait of the artist as incisive as Neel’s relentlessly honest paintings. With a new introduction by Hoban that explores Neel’s enduring relevance, this biography is essential to understanding and appreciating the life and work of one of America’s foremost artists.

Author Norman Lear, Retold by Jim Colucci, Foreword by Jimmy Kimmel
ID: 16508
Издательство: Rizzoli

All in the Family creator Norman Lear takes fans behind the scenes of the groundbreaking sitcom on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

The face of television was changed forever in 1971 with the premiere of All in the Family. The working-class Bunker family of Queens, New York — lovable bigot Archie (Carroll O'Connor), his long-suffering “dingbat” wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), their liberal daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), and son-in-law Mike "Meathead" Stivic (Rob Reiner) — instantly became, and half a century later still are, four of the most iconic characters in television.

In All in the Family: The Show that Changed Television, Norman Lear shares his take on fifty essential episodes that exemplify why the show remains as funny and relevant as ever. Its boundary-pushing approach to hot-button topics is examined with commentary from co-stars O’ Connor, Stapleton, Reiner, and Struthers, as well as writers, directors, and guest stars from the show. With previously unseen notes from Lear, script pages, production designs, and a foreword by super-fan Jimmy Kimmel, this book is the ultimate companion to the seminal series and a must for fans of Lear’s shows and television comedy. “Norman Lear,” said New Yorker critic Michael Arlen, “has a feel for what people want to see before they know they want to see it.” All in the Family, like all of the Lear shows that followed, was a turning point in television’s handling of taboo subjects such as race relations, feminism, homosexuality, war, religion, gun control, social inequity, and other controversial subjects, all of which remain in the news today.

About the Author:

Producer, philanthropist, and activist Norman Lear has the distinction of being among the first seven television pioneers inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. He won his first two Emmy® Awards in 1971 (for All in the Family’s premiere season) and his most recent one in 2020, for Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ”All In The Family” and ”Good Times.” His memoir, Even This I Get to Experience, was published in 2014. Jimmy Kimmel is the host and executive producer of the Emmy® Award–nominated Jimmy Kimmel Live!, ABC’s longest-running late-night talk show. Also a comedian and writer, he has hosted some of the biggest events in pop culture, including the Academy Awards, the Emmys, the American Music Awards, and the ESPY Awards, as well as executive-produced and hosted the Emmy Award–winning Live In Front Of A Studio Audience: “All In The Family” and “The Jeffersons” and Live in Front of a Studio Audience: “All In The Family” and “Good Times.”

Издательство: Rizzoli

Recognized as a major Pop artist in his day, Allan D’Arcangelo (1930–1998) has yet to receive the critical reevaluation of painters like Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. His first monograph in nearly a decade introduces new audiences to his iconic paintings, particularly his celebrated visions of life on the road.

Like Pop peers Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha, Allan D’Arcangelo incorporated mass-manufactured images in works that elevate scenes of everyday American life. While his work often features imagery from more familiar 1960s art — Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, smoking pin-up girls, Superman, Lucky Strike — it differs in the surreal elements he introduced to Pop tropes and romantic views of the American industrial landscape.

D’Arcangelo once observed his “most profound experiences of landscape were looking through the windshield.” The artist brought a Pop sensibility to the tradition of landscape painting in a graphic style that touched on Minimalism, Precisionism, and Hard-edge painting. Often framed from the perspective of the driver’s seat, D’Arcangelo’s work captures the deeply American experience of flying down an endless road. D’Arcangelo’s signature scrolling landscape cut through with flashing signs is as familiar to road trippers as it is to video game racers.

This comprehensive publication includes over 200 reproductions and three essays detailing what critic Dore Ashton describes as the “poetic awareness of the vastnesses both visible and invisible in American life [that] marked and distinguished [D’Arcangelo’s] work.”

About the Authors:

Alex J. Taylor is an Associate Professor in the History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh, and the author of Forms of Persuasion: Art and Corporate Image in the 1960s. Evan Moffitt is a writer, editor, and freelance critic based in New York. Cécile Whiting is Professor of Art History at the University of California, Irvine, and author of A Taste for Pop: Pop Art, Gender, and Consumer Culture.

The first volume in more than 20 years tells a new and modern story of the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Reception Rooms, one of the top collections of American fine and decorative arts in existence.

Winner, NYC Big Book Award 2023, Fine Arts; Best Art Book, American Book Fest Award, 2023

The art of United States diplomacy has been conducted over more than two centuries with figures from all over the world, in peacetime and in conflict. For the last six decades, these negotiations have taken place in the rarified environment of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State. Tucked inside the modern Truman Building in the center of Washington, D.C., lies this special suite of rooms transformed by four renowned architects — gems of classical architecture brimming with exceptional American art and artifacts that tell the story of the nation’s founding and represent the singular ideals of the American character.

Housing one of the finest collections in the world, along with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Winterthur, these rooms display more than 5,000 objects, including paintings by John Singleton Copley and Gilbert Stuart; silver and porcelain owned by George Washington and other presidents; fine furniture; maps and documents; prints and drawings, not to mention the very desk the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War was signed on.

With all-new photography and essays, this book captures the history of the rooms and explores more than 150 examples of the extraordinary American art that animates the exquisite spaces.

Many initiatives to support women were begun in the late 1800s, but the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is one of the few that remain. This initiative was born from the desire of three women – Princess Helena, Lady Victoria Welby and Lady Marian Alford – to popularise the lost art of ornamental needlework and place it on a par with other decorative arts, such as painting and sculpture. Their other, yet no less important goal was to provide employment for women compelled to earn their own livelihood. Though women are no longer so limited in occupational options, the RSN has been keeping traditional embroidery techniques alive for a century and a half.

An Unbroken Thread tells the story from the RSN’s founding in 1872 to the current day. It highlights key people, royal and other special commissions, the changing fortunes of the school as fashions changed and the approach to teaching hand embroidery, as well as bringing attention to the role and position of the RSN historically and today, associating with everyone from society ladies and theatre impresarios in the late 19th century to working with fashion designers Patrick Grant, Nicholas Oakwell and Alexander McQueen, and architects in the 21st century.

First published to coincide with the RSN’s 150th anniversary, this revised edition details the most recent projects worked by the RSN, showcasing their skilful work on regalia for the coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla – The King’s Robe of State, The Queen’s Robe of Estate, The Anointing Screen, The Stole Royal and Girdle, The Chairs of Estate and The Chairs of State.

Showcasing regalia for the coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Covering the remarkable history of the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) from inception to the present day Illustrated with historical pictures and documents.
Original edition published to coincide with the RSN’s 150th anniversary

About the Author:

Dr Susan Kay-Williams has been chief executive of the Royal School of Needlework since 2007. She is also a curator and archivist. She has spent a lot of her spare time researching the RSN’s history because she believes more of its remarkable history needs to be known. In her own right, her research interest is in the history of dyes and textile dyeing. She published The Story of Colour in Textiles in 2013 (Bloomsbury).

This fully illustrated history of the world’s best comic strip art, including

Hy Eisman’s The Katzenjammer Kids, which debuted in 1897, Charles Schultz’s Peanuts (1950), Peyo’s Smurfs (1958), Steve Ditko’s Spiderman (1962), Jack Kirby’s Black Panther (1966) or Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes (1985), or Chris Ware and his ACME Novelty Library (1993). The comics presented here have imagined fantastical worlds that have attracted generation after generation of devoted fans. A critical reference, this book is also a nostalgic celebration of the characters that have accompanied readers from their first forays into reading, through adolescence and throughout adulthood ― from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to Tintin and Little Nemo, from the superhero franchises to postmodern works such as Art Speigelman’s Maus or the underground comics of Robert Crumb. Featuring 125 American and European artists, this is a gorgeous retrospective on one of the most richly creative forms of reading pleasure.

Since the first dissections of corpses, anatomy and art have always been connected.

From Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings to Francis Bacon’s naked figures, artists have always been interested in the representation of the human as a biological being. Today, anatomy is back in vogue in contemporary art following the rebirth of gothic and horror in the entertainment industry.

This book features a celebration of anatomy, flesh, and bone by more than 60 contemporary international artists and celebrities including Damien Hirst, Mark Ryden, Jason Freeny, and Nychos.

About the Author:

Blending pop cultural themes with art techniques reminiscent of the Old Masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, and his work is part of the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Amanda Erlanson is a writer, art collector, and editor of the art blog "Erratic Phenomena."
