The complex oeuvre of the American artist Cy Twombly (1928-2011) comprises a time period of around six decades, during which it never lost any of its expressive power. Twombly was one of the most productive artists in the history of more recent art. Acclaimed as one of the most important painters of the second half of the 20th century, he fused the legacy of American Abstract Expressionism with European and Mediterranean culture.

The book focuses to a degree never before seen on his major cycles: Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963), Fifty Days at Iliam (1978), and Coronation of Sesostris (2000). The artist's development as a whole is traced based on nearly 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs. This thus provides unique insights into the overall intellectual and sensual richness of the oeuvre. From his early works at the beginning of the 1950s, which are characterised by the use of text, to his compositions of the 1960s, his reaction to the minimal art and conceptual art of the 1970s to his final paintings, the overview of the oeuvre underscores the significance of the series and cycles in which Cy Twombly invented history painting anew.

With its polyphonic conception, the monograph offers numerous approaches with essays that shed light on the various aspects and phases of Twombly's path as an artist. It comprises et al. the reflections and personal impressions of other artists as well as the memories of his assistant Nicola Del Roscio. These diverse testimonies make it possible to discover Cy Twombly not only as an artist, but also as an individual.

New printing - with new introduction by Duro Olowu - of this definitive study and essential guide to Jamaican Dancehall in the 1980s featuring hundreds of exclusive photographs with accompanying text, interviews and biographies.

This book captures a previously unseen era of musical culture fashion and lifestyle. With unprecedented access to the incredibly vibrant music scene during this period, Beth Lesser’s photographs are a unique way into a previously hidden part of Jamaican culture. Dancehall is at the centre of Jamaican musical and cultural life. From its roots in Kingston in the 1950s to its heyday in the 1980s, Dancehall has conquered the globe also spreading to the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and beyond.

Dancehall is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, drugs, guns, art, community, technology, and more. Many of today’s music and fashion styles can be traced back to Dancehall culture and continue to be influenced by it today.

Born in the 1950s out of the neighbourhood soundsystems of Kingston, Dancehall grew to its height in the 1980s before a massive influx of drugs and guns made the scene too dangerous for many.

Dancehall is an essential reference book for anyone interested in Reggae, as well as a unique photographic and textual source book of the musical, cultural and political life of Jamaica.

In the early 1980s, as Jamaica was in the throws of political and gang violence, Beth Lesser ventured where few others dared, and this book is a never-before-seen record of the exciting, dangerous and vibrant world of Dancehall. Beth Lesser’s book tells this story from its roots to its heights. Living in Jamaica in the late 70s and early 80s she photographed and documented a cultural explosion as producers, singers, DJs and soundsystems who all made a living out of the slums of Kingston.

About the Authors:

Beth Lesser is a noted music writer. In the early 1980s, as Jamaica was in the throes of political and gang violence, she ventured where few others dared, and produced this book – a unique record of the exciting, dangerous, and vibrant world of Dancehall.

This detailed two-volume set offers an unparalleled scholarly insight into the history of Danish porcelain. Renowned for its ceramic industry, Denmark earned its status as a leading porcelain exporter through intense rivalry with other firms across Europe. With its factories excelling time and time again at the largest international expositions of the 19th and early 20th century, Danish porcelain took its own place on the world stage.

Founded in 1775, Royal Copenhagen remains one the oldest porcelain manufacturers still in operation today. Throughout its history, the factory has experienced numerous highs and lows, and has weathered more than 130 years of competition from the Bing & Grøndahl Porcelain Factory. After 1882, the two factories were located less than a mile apart, with their flagship stores eventually competing side-by-side for sales in the heart of Copenhagen.

Danish Porcelain was inspired by a two-generation collection of Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl porcelain, stoneware and faience begun by the author’s father in 1947. Developed over the past 20 years, this is the first comprehensive publication to critically review the history of both factories, from their beginnings to their eventual merger. Featuring detailed appendices and over 2400 images, these two volumes comprise an important source of information on the history of Danish porcelain, including the many technical and artistic successes of the late 1880s that revolutionised production worldwide.

About the Author:

Dr. Elliot Todd is a second-generation collector of Danish porcelain, stoneware and faience from the factories of Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl. Also included is a discussion between Christopher Frayling, Philip Hoare and Mark Kermode, held at the V&A, of Bowie's cultural impact.

Beginning at Burnt Ash Primary school in the mid-1950s, the years go by in a whirlwind of discovering and making music. The book contains nearly 150 photos taken by MacCormack throughout the years, some never seen before: from touring the Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane shows and sailing to New York on a world tour, to Bowie’s first major film The Man Who Fell to Earth and the recording of Station to Station and his Thin White Duke persona.

David Bowie: Rock ‘n’ Roll with Me is an incredible story, told with wit and candour. A must for all Bowie fans, it sheds a rare insight into a friendship where two men shared their love for music from the moment they met to their final goodbyes.

- Afterword by David Bowie

About the Author

Geoff MacCormack, David Bowie’s lifelong friend, joined Bowie’s 1973 world tour as an additional back-up vocalist and percussionist, and later as a ‘Diamond Dog’ in '74 and what would be known as ‘The Young Americans Soul Tour’. He also worked on the six albums from Aladdin Sane to Station to Station. After three years of touring, recording and travelling with Bowie, MacCormack started an award winning (Gold Clio, Ivor Novello) music production partnership with Simon Goldenberg who he met, coincidentally, in The Three Tuns pub, home of Bowie’s earlier ‘Arts Lab’. For over 20 years, they wrote music for high-end advertising, films and TV. Geoff now manages the use and sale of his photographs of David Bowie around the world and has exhibited in St Petersburg, the USA and the UK, including the hugely successful ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll with Me’ exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery from September 2020 through to May 2022.

Contribution by Julie McGee, Jessica May, Thelma Golden, Richard Powell, Renee Maurer

Издательство: Rizzoli

This is the first publication to survey the entirety of this hugely influential scholar and artist's groundbreaking 60-year career.  Driskell and his landmark exhibition, Two Centuries of Black American Art are also featured in a recently released major documentary film.

David Driskell (1931-2020) was one of the most revered and boundary-breaking American artists, long recognized for his vibrant and versatile painting and printmaking practice, which combined his sharp observation of American landscapes and his interest in the imagery and aesthetic innovations of the African diaspora. Driskell was equally well-known as a curator, art historian, and educator, and his career as both artist and scholar created a durable public record of the long history of art made by African Americans.
The exhibition and accompanying catalogue survey seven decades of the artist's painterly practice from the 1950s forward. Driskell's command of color and line is showcased through his beloved subjects, including the natural world, remembrances of the Southern Black experience, and the Black Christian church.

The book includes a primary essay by Driskell scholar and curator Julie McGee as well as many other testaments to Driskell by major American artists, art historians, and museum professionals. The catalogue also features a selection of Driskell's most significant writings, introducing the full range of his career to future generations of readers.

McGee is Associate Professor of Africana Studies and Art History, and Director of the Interdisciplinary Study Center at the University of Delaware. Jessica May is an independent curator and formerly Deputy Director and Robert and Elizabeth Nanovic Chief Curator at Portland Museum of Art, Maine. Thelma Golden is the Director of the Studio Museum in Harlem. Lowery Stokes Sims is an independent curator. Richard J. David Hockney

Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The perfect gift for Hockney fans and dog lovers everywhere, David Hockney's Dog Days, now in a gift edition, is an album devoted to two of the artist's closest friends, his dachshunds Stanley and Boodgie. This beautiful and engaging book includes almost all of Hockney's paintings and drawings of his two companions, dozens of new illustrations created specially for this book, and a text by the artist himself.

David Hockney introduces his two dachshunds, Stanley and Boodgie, in this delightful collection. The result of sharp observation and affection, these paintings and drawings are lyrical studies in form and design while the text by the artist gives a glimpse of how to work with models who don't necessarily want to sit still.

From September 1993, I painted and drew my dogs. This took a certain amount of planning, since dogs are generally not interested in Art (I say generally only because I have now come across a singing dog. Food and love dominate their lives.

I make no apologies for the apparent subject matter. These two dear little creatures are my friends. They are intelligent, loving, comical and often bored. They watch me work; I notice the warm shapes they make together, their sadness and their delights. And, being Hollywood dogs, they somehow seem to know that a picture is being made. - David Hockney

About the Author:

David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. He has produced work in almost every medium - painting, drawing, stage design, photography and printmaking - and has stretched the boundaries of all of them. Born in Bradford, England, in 1937, Hockney attended art school in London before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s. There, he painted his famous swimming pool paintings. In a 2011 poll of more than 1,000 British artists, Hockney was voted the most influential British artist of all time. He continues to create and exhibit art.

This book, which accompanies the first major exhibition devoted to David Hockney’s drawings in over 20 years, will explore Hockney as a draughtsman from the 1950s to now, with a focus on himself, his family and friends. From Ingres to the iPad – this book demonstrates the artist’s ingenuity in portrait drawing with reference to both tradition and technology.

David Hockney is recognised as one of the master draughtsmen of our times and a champion of the medium. This book will feature Hockney’s work from the 1950s to now and focus on his depictions of himself and a smaller group of sitters close to him: his muse, Celia Birtwell; his mother, Laura Hockney; and his friends, the curator, Gregory Evans, and master printer, Maurice Payne.

This book will examine not only how drawing is fundamental to Hockney’s distinctive way of observing the world around him, but also how it has been a testing ground for ideas and modes of expression later played out in his paintings.

From Old Masters to modern masters, from Holbein to Picasso, Hockney’s portrait drawings reveal his admiration for his artistic predecessors and his continuous stylistic experimentation throughout his career.

Alongside an in-depth essay from the curator, this book will feature an exclusive interview between author and curator, Sarah Howgate, and artist, David Hockney. In addition, an ‘In Focus’ essay by British Museum curator Isabel Seligman, will explore the relationship between Hockney, Ingres and Picasso drawings.

An in-depth collection of the work and life of perhaps cinema and TV’s greatest cult creator, David Lynch.

In 1990 David Lynch released ‘Twin Peaks’ and television would never quite be the same again. Ostensibly a mystery serial drama, the series introduced viewers to a surreal and eccentric world of uncanny and camp strangeness that has gone down in pop culture legend. With his films, the most famous of which are ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Blue Velvet’, but which also include ‘The Elephant Man’, 1984’s ‘Dune’ and the Palme d’Or winning ‘Wild at Heart’, Lynch created similarly strange, sylised and perplexing worlds, rich in invention.

Across his career Lynch turned his attention to film, television, art, music, photography, Transcendental Meditation and – more recently – nightclub design and weather forecasting, and his sources of influence and inspiration are equally diverse. These range across painting, photography, cinema, literature and beyond, and collectively help unlock his hugely influential work.

David Lynch: His Work, His World  brings Lynch's complete output together into one visually led collection, and tells the full story of how he worked, created, thought and lived.

A beautifully illustrated, in-depth look at recent works by David Reed, an American artist who brings conceptual interests in process and duration to his abstract paintings.

Since the outset of his career, David Reed’s central preoccupation has been to challenge and reinvent how to make a painting. Consistently, his paintings present a compelling tension between the gestural and the impersonal; in recent times this has been characterized by fluid, torquing, extended marks that reveal the viscosity of paint and the speed of color and light in a flattened manner that looks photographic or filmic.

David Reed documents the artist’s 2020 exhibition of new work at Gagosian in New York, presenting 15 outsize paintings that, in many cases, were over a decade in the making. The plates are punctuated by striking details of several works. The artist’s “working drawings,” which he has long made to document the many stages of a painting’s creation, are illustrated throughout the plate section, offering insights into his varied sources and complex processes.

A new essay by art historian Richard Shiff examines the emotional tenor of Reed’s paintings.

About the Author:

Richard Shiff is the Effie Marie Cain Regents Chair in Art at the University of Texas at Austin, where he directs the Center for the Study of Modernism.
