A personal celebration of the hunt for — and joy of living with — favorite collections and things

What is it in our homes that we truly value and why? What would you take when you leave in fear of fire?

Our home is an expression of ourselves in many ways, largely through the objects we accumulate. For Maria Hummer-Tuttle, the objects she has collected over the years, from the priceless to the flea-market finds, are precious not only for their beauty, uniqueness, and craftsmanship but also for their connection to the past and the future, for their resonance with one another.

In this exquisitely illustrated book, she serves as our guide through three dwellings, focusing our attention on objects ranging from an ancient Chinese horse sculpture to a Louis XV clock painted with characters from an Aesop fable, from a small snail sculpture found in a venerable hardware store to a monumental safety-pin sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, and from 18th-century to 20th-century furniture.

With a foreword by master ceramicist and acclaimed author Edmund de Waal and featuring two lavish gatefolds, Objects of Desire is a feast for the eyes and an object to be cherished in its own right.

Henry-Jean Servat, Pierre Passebon
ID: 12206
Издательство: Flammarion

Featuring rare images from Pierre Passebon’s personal collection, this volume celebrates Marlene Dietrich, Hollywood’s iconic femme fatale, as immortalized by master photographers including Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Milton Greene, George Hurrell, Antony Armstrong-Jones, and others. An active participant in her photo sessions, she constructed her own unique image of charm and seduction.

Dietrich’s life was devoted to glamour for over forty years: in stage performances, on screen, and in concert. The public loved her. A modern and transgressive woman, she didn’t hesitate to break the rules by dressing in menswear (she was Yves Saint Laurent’s muse for his iconic tuxedos) or by being seen in public with her husband and her lovers (both male and female). Dietrich also refused to bend to Hollywood conventions around motherhood by raising her daughter in the limelight.

Her beauty, style, and elegance made her the archetypal femme fatale, but it was Dietrich’s unwavering confidence, gender fluidity, and firm stand against Nazism that made her a revolutionary and an icon. This volume reveals how her fascination lies not only in the way she inspired the greatest photographers and fashion designers of her time, but in how she continues to embody the essence of glamour and female independence today.

Alexandra Bouni, Edited by Studio Olafur Eliasson
ID: 18215
Издательство: Silvana Editoriale

The Curious Desert was the first solo exhibition of Olafur Eliasson’s work in the Gulf region, staged in March 2023.

The exhibition brought together a dozen new site-specific installations located in the desert, near the Al Thakhira Mangrove in Northern Qatar, and an extensive gallery presentation at the National Museum of Qatar of artworks created over the artist’s career.
The outdoor installation consisted of 12 temporary pavilions that Eliasson considers to form an artistic laboratory in the desert. Many of the experiments inside the pavilions utilised natural phenomena, such as wind, water, and sunlight, to create artworks that emerged over the course of the day or, as the seasons change, over the duration of the exhibition.

At the National Museum of Qatar, the gallery exhibition featured a variety of artworks from different periods of Eliasson’s career and in a wide range of media, including expansive light installations, complex geometric models, photo series from Iceland, watercolours, optical devices and an extensive map of the research areas that occupy the artist and his studio. The themes that run throughout the two-part exhibition relate to the broad interests expressed in Eliasson’s wider practice.

Text by Olafur Eliasson, Bouthayna Baltaji, Lina Patmali, Aspa D. Chatziefthimiou, Reem Al Selawhi, Hashim Sarkis. Photographs by Ali Faisal Al Anssari, Iwan Baan, Anders Sune Berg.

The Art of Transformation

Using her own body as raw material for her artistic practice, French artist Orlan deconstructs the traditional iconography of the feminine. In the 1990s, ORLAN caused a sensation with surgical operations performed on her body, but it was as early as 1964, at the age of 17, that she gave birth to her artistic self. Since then, she has continuously recreated herself and keenly explored the concept of identity. In her “carnal art,” the body becomes both subject and object. This publication traverses the six decades of Orlan’s oeuvre, revisiting her early performances in particular. One of her most recent creations is the ORLAN-OÏDE robot, and thanks to an augmented reality app, Orlan avatars come to life and emerge from this richly illustrated volume. The political status of the body is made evident through all of her works: in 1989 she transformed Gustave Courbet’s famous painting L’origine du monde into L’origine de la guerre by replacing the vulva with the phallus. The statement has not lost any of its topicality.

About the Author:

Orlan (*1947, Saint-Étienne) is one of the most noteable representatives of the feminist avant-garde and performance art as well as the founder of L'Art Charnel (carnal art). The French artist has been using her own body as artistic material for six decades. She lives and works in Paris.

A dazzling study of the role and fundamental importance of decoration in Islamic architecture, available in a new compact format

Surface decoration has always played a fundamental role in Islamic architecture. As human representation is forbidden in Islamic religious monuments, designers employed mosaics, stucco, brickwork and ceramics, and the vigorous use of brilliant colour to reach unparalleled heights of expression. It is this ornamental dimension of Islamic architecture that is explored in this magnificent volume.

Rather than limiting itself to an exclusively historical or chronological perspective, Ornament and Decoration in Islamic Architecture presents four successive approaches to its subject. The first part offers an overview of Islamic architecture, discussing the great diversity it contains. Dealing exclusively with techniques, the second part considers the materials most often used as well as the expertise of the builders and Muslim decorative artists, and the third part explores themes in Islamic ornamentation. Section four discusses aesthetics, and studies the relationship between the buildings – the
structures or their architectonic components – and their ornamental coverings.

Each of these topics is presented through a number of outstanding examples and then through comparable monuments from all over the Islamic world. For anyone in thrall to such great wonders as the Taj Mahal and the Alhambra, and for everyone interested in the world of Islam, this lavish publication will be indispensable

Contents List:

1. Islamic Architecture and Decoration • 2. Materials and Techniques • 3. Ornamental Motifs • 4. Surface Art

About the Authors:

Dominique Clévenot is a professor at the University of Toulouse and is the author of several books on Islamic art.
Gérard Degeorge has contributed to several books on Islamic art and architecture, including The Art of the Islamic Tile and Damascus.

Enter the world of OSGEMEOS, the Brazilian twins driving international graffiti culture.

Contemporary art is sometimes considered an austere matter: ascetic in palette, serious in tone, a subject for sober contemplation. That stereotype is exploded — ecstatically, and in full color — by the work of OSGEMEOS, trailblazing twin Brazilian artists with a practice as firmly rooted in the rule-breaking world of urban graffiti as it is in the elevated spheres of museum and gallery. Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo first wielded their spray cans (and spun their discs, and breakdanced with friends) in the São Paulo hip-hop scene of the 1980s and ’90s, drawing from that vibrant milieu the lesson that art is at its best, and most meaningful, when everyone is invited to the party.

Combining historical and contemporary elements of Brazilian society with graffiti, hip-hop, and youth culture, OSGEMEOS: Endless Story extends an invitation into the artists’ expansive body of work, which embraces murals, paintings, sculpture, installations, and video, all using a symbolic visual language often inspired by dreams.

Renowned for their spindly yellow characters — seen dancing, writing graffiti, interacting with their urban settings, and stretching high across buildings and train cars worldwide —OSGEMEOS creates works that invite readers into a surreal, chimerical world filled with motifs that signal access to another realm or the deep psyche. This fantasy world, which they call Tritrez, is the apex of their vision: a land of wonder that reflects the diverse nature of Brazil itself.

OSGEMEOS: Endless Story, the artists’ first major English-language monograph, will be accompanied by their first US survey exhibition and their largest US show to date, on view at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, from May 2024 to July 2025. The book is given a third dimension through Hirshhorn Eye (Hi) technology: readers can activate, via smartphone, videos of the artists and the exhibition’s curators discussing the works in both book and show.

About the Authors:

Marina Isgro is associate curator, media and performance art, and Melissa Chiu is director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC.

Marguerite Itamar Harrison is an expert on Brazilian art at Smith College.

Alan Ket is cofounder and curator of the Museum of Graffiti and Wynwood Gallery, Miami, Florida.

Peter Michalski is an expert in uncommissioned public works on walls and trains.

Jochen Volz is the director of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil.

Is it painting or sculpture? This literally outstanding exhibition catalog deepens our understanding of a genre-bending medium over the course of nearly two centuries.

No other artistic medium transcends the boundaries of our vision quite like the relief; this very ambiguity has tempted some of the world’s greatest artists to explore its possibilities. Delving into the subject of reliefs in modern art, this book presents to readers the unique opportunity to do some exploring themselves. From 1800 on, it traces the relief's fluid aesthetic, and illuminates the significance of innovation and adaptation until the 1960s.

Opening with neoclassical works that echoed the reliefs of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, the authors examine sculptors who deliberately defied the boundaries of their medium, such as Jules Dalou, Auguste Rodin, and Medardo Rosso, juxtaposing these works with those of painter-sculptors such as Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, and Pablo Picasso. Readers will learn how Dadaists such as Kurt Schwitters, Hans Arp, and Sophie Taeuber- Arp transformed the techniques of collage and assemblage using found materials, and how Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson or Lee Bontecou ushered in a return to monumental, large-scale works. Filled with highest quality reproductions and photographs, this book celebrates the evolution of a means of creative expression that started as a dialectic between genres and which, over decades, has achieved the status of an artistic medium in its own right.

About the Authors:

Alexander Eiling was Curator at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Germany, until 2017. He is Curator and Head of Modern Art at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, since 2018.

Karin Schick is Curator and Head of the Department of Modern Art at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany.

Ugo Bazzotti

An opulent pleasure palace for rest and entertainment, the Palazzo Te is the masterpiece of Renaissance artist, designer and architect Giulio Romano, the most accomplished and favoured of all Raphael’s pupils.

Built for Federico II Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, between 1525 and 1536, the Palazzo’s interiors are decorated with spectacular frescoes of themes from ancient myth. Showing richly imaginative scenes and trompe l’oeil fantasies, they depict gods and heroes, fictive marble statues and portraits of the Duke’s favourite thoroughbreds.

From the erotic scenes of the Chamber of Psyche to the famous Chamber of the Giants, based on the defeat of the Titans by the gods of Olympus, the High Renaissance ideal of classical harmony and balance is overtaken by breathtaking illusionist techniques, with images of giants, falling masonry and the gods’ thunderbolts filling the visitor’s imagination.

Ugo Bazzotti takes the reader through the halls, courtyards and gardens that constitute this elaborate masterpiece of Mannerist decoration, explaining its history and the inventiveness and versatility of its creator.

A Mosaic of Femininity

Founded in 1984 by women around Gabriele Stötzer, the Erfurt Women Artists’ Group pursued a radically creative lifestyle to counter the rigid structures of everyday life in the GDR, over a period of ten years. Subversive, witty, borne of a liberating sense of defiance against normative gender roles, their artistic expressions provide an insight into the little-known feminist subculture in the GDR. Their pioneering role in terms of an exploration of female identity is particularly reflected through five experimental Super 8 films, subsequent live performances, and fashion-object shows. Often unfolding intuitively from sequences of audio, dance, and literary elements, self-created and provocative costumes that served as alter egos of the artists took center stage. Their political commitment culminated in December 1989 in the first occupation of a Stasi, State Security Service, headquarters, initiated by five women, three of whom were part of the group.

The Erfurt Women Artists’ Group remained active with personnel changes — Monika Andres, Tely Büchner, Elke Carl, Monique Förster, Gabriele Göbel, Ina Heyner, Verena Kyselka, Claudia Morca Bogenhardt, Bettina Neumann, Ingrid Plöttner, Marlies Schmidt, Gabriele Stötzer, Harriet Wollert and others — until 1994.
