Chess, one of the world’s most popular games, has inspired artists for hundreds of years

Though apparently offering a limited canvas – each set has 32 pieces, each board 64 squares – sets have nevertheless been designed in countless ways, using almost every imaginable material: from precious metals, to ivory and rock crystal. They have taken many forms, from figural to abstract, and used many diverse themes, from the historical and political to the beauty and variety of the animal kingdom.

This book brings together some of the most beautiful and unusual chess sets ever made. Over hundreds of years, from five continents, they are culled from private collections and museums, including: 200 year-old sets made by nameless Indian craftsmen; sets by Peter Carl Fabergé; sets from Soviet gulag prisoners; and sets by leading artists of the 20th century, like Max Ernst.

About the Author:

Cristina Córdova is a contemporary artist and sculpting instructor whose work is collected around the world. She is featured in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum; The Colección Acosta de San Juan, Puerto Rico; the Mint Museum of Craft + Design; the Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, among others. She is the recipient of numerous grants and award, including NC Arts Council Fellowship Grant, a Virginia Groot Foundation Recognition Grant, several International Association of Art Critics of Puerto Rico awards, and in 2015 the prestigious United States Artist Fellowship award. Her work is widely featured in all major ceramics and arts media, including the covers of Ceramics Monthly, and was featured by Craft in America, on PBS, in their episode on Identity.

Cristina has taught and demonstrated around the world, though she focuses mostly on US locations. Her residencies, workshops, and classes include: Harvard University, the University of California, the University of Nebraska, the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Ceramistas de Reñaca in Chile, the Australian National University in Canberra, Gaya Ceramics in Bali, Penland School of Crafts (NC), Haystack Mountain School (ME), Santa Fe Clay (NM), Mudfire (GA), Odyssey Center for Ceramics (NC), and Anderson Ranch (CO), among others.

Masterpieces of Russian Stage Design 1880-1930 examines the Lobanov-Rostovsky collection of stage design, in turn outlining the history of modern Russian art: one of the most important interludes within the cultural renaissance of the early twentieth century. About the Author:

John Cauman is an independent curator and writer on late 19th-century and early 20th-century art. He studied at Columbia and Bennington before receiving his PhD from City University of New York with a dissertation on Matisse and America: 1905-1933. He has contributed to various publications including Inheriting Cubism and co-curated the exhibition ‘Matisse and American Art’ at Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey, 2018.

Travel is a fundamental experience of human existence. For Max Beckmann it was of existential importance both in a symbolic, but also in a deeply personal sense. In the 1920s, he regularly traveled to the noble health resorts and palace hotels on the Dutch, Italian, and French coasts. His defamation as a "degenerate" artist by the Nazi regime, however, forced him to retreat, first from Frankfurt to Berlin and subsequently into exile in Amsterdam. His emigration to the United States marked the culmination of a life entwined with the longing to travel as well as uprooting, transit and exile. Max Beckmann. DEPARTURE assembles an outstanding selection of artworks and initiates a dialogue with hitherto unseen objects and materials from the Max Beckmann Archive. It shows Beckmann’s relationship to film and literature as a producer of images of aspirations and longing resonating with notions of identity and home.

About the Author:

Max Beckmann (1884-1950) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. A star of the Berlin Secession, Beckmann’s career was slowed by World War I and a personal crisis, but continued in the 1920s. After the Nazis forced him to resign his professorship in Frankfurt in 1933, he went into exile in Amsterdam in 1937 and subsequently emigrated to the US in 1947. Teaching in St. Louis and New York, he became the most successful German artist in the United States of his time.

Cubism, widely regarded as the most influential style to emerge at the advent of modernism, had a home in New York and a leading figure in Max Weber.

Max Weber studied under Matisse, associated with influential figures including Apollinaire, Picasso, and Delaunay, and is credited with bringing firsthand knowledge of the Parisian avant-garde to Alfred Stieglitz’s modernist circle in New York, inspiring a generation of artists. While his works are in important collections, they have not yet received the close study of the artist’s peers, such as Picasso, Braque, and Leger.

William C. Agee, a veteran museum curator and renowned scholar of twentieth-century American art, and scholar Pamela N. Koob take up the challenge in a lavishly illustrated volume, gathering together a selection of Max Weber’s best cubist works. Close readings of Weber’s paintings open the most complete survey to date of American cubism, with entries on key cubist works by Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Hans Hofmann, Charles Sheeler, Morgan Russell, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Alice Trumbull Mason, and David Smith, among many others. Pressure exerted by America in 1854 caused Japan to open its doors after 260 years of isolation. Virtually uninhibited receptiveness to everything Western was the driving force behind the modernisation of Japan initiated by the Meiji government yet it also induced a rapid rediscovery of indigenous cultural values. At early Paris and London international exhibitions, the Japanese decorative and applied arts sparked off the Western fascination with all things Japanese – japonisme.
