The magic and mastery of anime springs to life in this gorgeous celebration of the genre

A uniquely powerful form of artistic expression, anime has embraced complex and provocative ideas since its inception in the mid twentieth century.

This dynamic and wide-ranging book explores eighty key themes of the genre, from wars to natural disasters, nature to ecology, childhood to magic, dystopias to fables. It looks at more than one hundred masterpieces of Japanese animation, including Akira, Ghost in the Shell, One Piece, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies and Howl’s Moving Castle, to show how practitioners consistently balance tradition with modernity and how anime’s distinct style has influenced other forms of media such as video games, comic books and live-action films.

Covering an enormous range of talent — from Isao Takahata, Katsuhiro Ôtomo, and Makoto Shinkai to Studio Ghibli and Mamoru Oshii — it demonstrates how anime makes room for limitless creativity. Unfettered by the physical constraints of nature’s laws, these artists realize our deepest emotions and our wildest dreams.

About the Author:

Nathalie Bittinger is a senior lecturer in film studies at the University of Strasbourg, France. She has published several books on Asian cinema.

Published to accompany the major exhibition at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, this is a brilliantly illustrated survey of the international comic book landscape over the past sixty years

From the mid-1960s, the world of comics rapidly evolved into a highly creative art form for a sophisticated readership: in France, the magazine Hara-Kiri provided new terrains for graphical humour, while the adventures of Jean-Claude Forest’s Barbarella were published in albums by Éric Losfeld; the launch in Japan of Garo in 1964, an avant-garde monthly, presented the concept of auteur comics; and the release of Robert Crumb’s Zap Comix in 1968 established his reputation as the leader of the underground comics movement in the United States.

For the first time, this major historical survey of the ninth art establishes a dialogue between the three leading regions of comic book culture – Europe, Asia and America – and offers an immersive odyssey of the medium through its development over six decades ranging from the explosion of the twentieth-century counterculture scene to the most abstract contemporary styles.

Built around twelve themes encompassing the many worlds of the comics imagination, Comics: 1964–2024 features artists including André Franquin, Gotlib, Claire Bretécher, Osamu Tezuka, Moebius, Edmond Baudoin, Alison Bechdel, Ulli Lust, Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi and Chris Ware, as well as introductions on each theme by leading authorities of the form, a brand new interview with renowned cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco, and a foreword by Paul Gravett.

The first chronological global history of comics, from 1968 through to the present day

The story begins in 1968, a key year in comics’ shift from being driven by commercial potential into a means of self-expression respected not just as entertainment but also as art. The book traces comics’ evolution up to the emergence of today's global, digital scene and the medium’s likely future.

Robert Crumb and Gabrielle Bell, Jack Kirby and Alan Moore, Moebius, Yumiko Oshima and Osamu Tezuka are just a few of the hundreds of artists and writers included – making it unprecedented in its global reach.

The broad reach of Comics extends to artists, styles and movements, spanning Marvel and DC superheroes; the Underground movement and manga powerhouse Osamu Tezuka; politically charged Italian fumetti and sexually charged ladies’ manga; the Francophone technique of ligne claire; sci-fi; Métal Hurlant; the pioneering Japanese alternative journal Garo; the graphic memoir and the graphic novel; and, finally, the moment comics made the jump from page to web page.

Featuring the best-known artists and writers – from Jack Kirby, Hergé and Moebius to Katsuhiro Otomo, Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore – Comics also introduces readers to some creators they may not yet have encountered, such as Andrea Pazienza, the Fort Thunder collective and Fabrice Neaud.

Everyday Scenes from a Parallel World is a celebration of the beauty of the scenes and backgrounds in anime and manga.

This unusual book turns the spotlight exclusively on the scenes and background illustrations. With only a few ordinary characters in these scenes, attention here is focused on the beauty of the illustrated backgrounds.

These background artworks feature familiar scenes from daily life: nostalgic townscapes, detailed cityscapes, intricate architecture, rooms that look like doll houses, etc. They are extremely realistic and detailed -- almost like photographs -- but at the same time give readers the sense that we are looking at images of a parallel world.

The works featured are by 39 well-known, mostly Japanese creators, illustrators, and animators. Some creators featured have made their entire careers specializing in drawing backgrounds. Frequently overlooked, this book finally gives them the recognition they deserve. Additionally, a section that explains drawing techniques and materials is included. The profiles of creators with messages from each, descriptions of each creator's techniques and preferred materials are written in both Japanese and English text.

This stunning collection will appeal to all art lovers and is sure to bring creators massive inspiration, too.
