Mighty Marvel Calendar Book: A Visual History presents seven years of Marvel history in this incredible showcase featuring art from some of the greatest illustrators who drew stories for the House of Ideas.

From 1975–81, Marvel created seven consecutive calendars that were as artistically designed and captivatingly written as any of their comic books. Each of these annual calendars — whether they celebrated the Bicentennial (1976) or spotlighted a specific character such as Spider-Man (1978), Hulk (1979), or Doctor Strange (1980), featured heroes and villains across the pantheon of the Marvel Universe — and all shared inspired features. These included visual call-outs for birthdays of noted Marvel staff and creators; key moments in Marvel history; special events, famous quotes from fan-favorite issues, and other celebratory mentions; with exclusive art from iconic Marvel artists, created especially for these calendars by Jack Kirby, John Buscema, John Byrne, Frank Miller, Walter Simonson, Gil Kane, George Pérez, Gene Colan, Jim Starlin, Sal Buscema, Mike Ploog, and dozens more.

Never before has all of this astounding art been reprinted, and the complete set of covers, interiors, and gorgeously designed monthly entries are reproduced at their original size in this beautiful, oversize hardcover package. Also included is new commentary, rare promotional materials, and an introduction by longtime Marvel writer/editor/historian Roy Thomas. The years might keep ticking away, but the work collected in this special book remains timeless!

“These calendars showcase some of the greatest artwork ever done in comics. I’ve been waiting a long, long time for this book.” —Alex Ross

A rich, vibrantly illustrated account of the history and sources of manga

Manga has attained phenomenal worldwide success in recent years, and shows no signs of slowing down. As contemporary as this graphic artform may appear to readers outside of Japan, manga is the fruit of a long artistic tradition. Manga as we know it today is deeply rooted in ancient Japanese culture, and traces can be found in seventh-century temple paintings, folding screens decorated with comical characters, and painted scrolls. The more familiar manga comics of today, aimed at a broad audience of adults as well as children, echo similar themes and draw on narrative forms from throughout Japan’s rich history.

This book spans the history of manga in all its splendour and diversity. From Hokusai’s seminal Manga of 1814 to the genre-shaping works of Tezuka Osamu, from the friendly ghosts and monsters created by Mizuki Shigeru to huge franchises such as One Piece and Demon Slayer, every period is covered. One Thousand Years of Manga is both a rich documentary account and a visual delight packed with over 400 illustrations, demonstrating how this mass-produced medium has become a key facet of Japanese culture that is now enjoyed across the globe.

Contents List:

1. The Origins of Manga
2. The Magic of the Scroll: From the Earliest Caricatures to the Onset of the Comic Strip
3. The Birth of the Japanese Print: The Golden Age of Caricature
4. The Dawn of a New Type of Caricature: Japan Opens Up to the West
5. The Rise of the Comic Strip to the Second World War
6. Tezuka Osamu: The ‘God’ of the Modern Manga
7. Manga Today
8. Selected Portraits of Manga Artists
9. From Manga to Anime: The Work of Studio Ghibli
10. Reciprocal Influences

About the Author:

Brigitte Koyama-Richard is a professor of comparative literature and art history at Musashi University in Tokyo. She has published several works on Japan, including L’Animation japonaise, and she regularly works with Les Nouvelles éditions de la Scala specializing in Art and Japanese culture.

_________

In recent years, Manga has seen phenomenal success, not only in Japan, where it dominates the publishing industry, but also in the West, where it is steadily growing in popularity and influence. As swift and sudden as the popularity of this graphic art form may seem, Manga has, in fact, deep roots in Japanese culture, drawing on centuries-old artistic traditions. As early as the twelfth century, Emakimono scrolls existed, a narrative form in which stories of all kinds - romantic, fantastic, even comic - were told through the combined use of text and illustration. Japanese art continued to change as profound political, social, and economic transformations remade the country in the centuries to follow. Today there is little doubt as to the meaning of the term Manga - nor to the astonishing popularity of the form - but few in the West understand the long artistic history that gave birth to this phenomenon and the social factors that continue to shape it today. One Thousand Years of Manga is both an informative account of the genesis of the form and a visual delight.

Through its captivating illustrations and enlightening text, the book situates Manga in its proper context, appreciating it for what it truly is: an integral part of Japanese art and culture that is as rich and revealing as it is popular.

Aurelie Levy, Elizabeth Colomba

Издательство: Abrams

Queenie: Godmother of Harlem isa historical graphic novel inspired by the life of legendary mobster Stephanie Saint-Clair, the infamous criminal who made herself a legend in the 1930s.

“It’s original, entertaining, riveting, moving. A beautiful piece of art, a must-read!” —Whoopi Goldberg

Born on a plantation in the French colony of Martinique, Stephanie Saint-Clair left the island in 1912 and headed for the United States, eager to make a new life for herself. In New York she found success, rising up through poverty and battling extreme racism to become the ruthless queen of Harlem’s mafia and a fierce defender of the Black community.

A racketeer and a bootlegger, Saint-Clair dedicated her wealth and compassion to the struggling masses of Harlem, giving loans and paying debts to those around her. But with Prohibition ending, and under threat by Italian mobsters seeking to take control of her operation, she launched a merciless war to save her territory and her skin. In an America still swollen by depression and segregation, Saint-Clair understood that her image was a tool she could use to establish her power and wield as a weapon against her opponents.

Authors Elizabeth Colomba and Aurelie Levy’s meticulous details — in both story and art — bring Saint-Clair’s story to life in a tense narrative, against a sometimes bloody backdrop of jazz and voodoo. The story tackles the themes of colonization, corruption, police violence, and racial identity, but above all, Queenie celebrates the genius of a woman forgotten by history.

About the Author:

Aurelie Levy is a screenwriter, novelist, and documentary filmmaker. Born and raised in France, she pursued her higher education in Japan at the prestigious ICU in Tokyo where she studied history. She then extended her film and history studies at UCLA where she met Elizabeth Colomba. She then went on to write and direct six feature-length documentaries. For the past 20 years she has traveled around the globe unveiling relevant stories and addressing current issues. Among the subjects she has tackled are celebrity culture, international adoption, and men in the #MeToo era. Levy writes screenplays and TV series for French and US productions and hosts a podcast on writing with the largest literary media company in France. Other books by the author include the novel And the Oscar Goes To (2012) and The 21st Man (2021).

Star Wars and sequential art share a long history: Star Wars debuted on the comic-book page in 1977, when Marvel Comics began publishing a six-part adaptation of the first film, which morphed into a monthly comic book. The second book in the Star Wars Art series, Star Wars Art: Comics brings together the very best artwork from the entire history of Star Wars comics publishing, showcasing original art from the top comics artists working in the industry. Hand-selected and curated by George Lucas, the art featured in this volume includes interior pages and fully painted covers from artists such as Al Williamson, Howard Chaykin, Adam Hughes, Bill Sienkiewicz, Dave Dorman, and many more — as well as new work created exclusively for this book by over 20 renowned artists, including John Cassaday, Sam Kieth, Mike Mignola, Paul Pope, Frank Quitely, Jim Steranko, and other comics superstars. Star Wars Art: Comics is a tribute to sequential storytelling, a worthy and justly celebrated art form.
