Makura Kurama
ID: 16892
Издательство: PIE Books

The first collection of Makura Kurama's art.

The world of Makura Kurama is full of darkness and beauty. The owners, guests, neighbors, and other characters that appear in the antique shop suffer from grief, fear, or pain in their minds. The gothic-style costumes and motifs, such as skeletons, dolls, corpses, taxidermy, natural specimens, and of course love, lends a dark, fantastical atmosphere to the stories. But these stories never become incurable tragedies.

Makura Kurama's refined brushwork and the sense of hope, of finding light in the darkness, always bring a redemptive element to the stories.

This book is the first art collection of Makura Kurama's work and includes short stories, comics, and illustrations. Even those who know Makura Kurama's work will be fascinated by these stories, which are never as despairing and painful as they first seem as they end in happiness. Why not ring the bell of a peculiar antique shop and see for yourself?

About the Author:

Makura Kurama is an up-and-coming creator who became an instant star upon the release of the short story comic The Peculiar Antique Shop: Plague Doctor and Mrs. Antlers on Twitter in 2018.

Filled with earnest quotes, snarky observations, episode recaps, inspirational mantras, and classic images readers with fond memories of the 1980s classic cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe! will use the wit and wisdom found in this affordable and affable volume to launch their own plans toward planetary domination.

Thanks to its multitude of dynamic characters and rich fantasy and science-fiction storytelling, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe has resonated with fans for more than thirty years. Skeletor, He-Man's evil nemesis in the show, remains an icon of villainy for generations who grew up hearing his cackle.

Now, for the first time, all of the diabolical wit and wisdom gleaned from Skeletor's unrelenting campaign to wreak havoc on the planet Eternia are collected into one practical, and practically hilarious, volume. This fully authorized, comical, and empowering guide places the evil Skeletor in a variety of troubling scenarios that will be familiar to any reader--from 'Family and Frenemies' to 'Career' and 'Downtime' -- and asks the all-important question: What Would Skeletor Do? Combining words of devilish wisdom with appropriate (or inappropriate!) pictures from the original cartoons, this book lets Skeletor tell you how to handle any awkward situation with aplomb. With tongue planted very firmly in cheek, What Would Skeletor Do? is the perfect inspirational resource for pop-culture aficionados of all ages.

Published to accompany the major exhibition at the Pompidou Centre, Paris, this is a brilliantly illustrated survey of the international comic book landscape over the past sixty years

From the mid-1960s, the world of comics rapidly evolved into a highly creative art form for a sophisticated readership: in France, the magazine Hara-Kiri provided new terrains for graphical humour, while the adventures of Jean-Claude Forest’s Barbarella were published in albums by Éric Losfeld; the launch in Japan of Garo in 1964, an avant-garde monthly, presented the concept of auteur comics; and the release of Robert Crumb’s Zap Comix in 1968 established his reputation as the leader of the underground comics movement in the United States.

For the first time, this major historical survey of the ninth art establishes a dialogue between the three leading regions of comic book culture – Europe, Asia and America – and offers an immersive odyssey of the medium through its development over six decades ranging from the explosion of the twentieth-century counterculture scene to the most abstract contemporary styles.

Built around twelve themes encompassing the many worlds of the comics imagination, Comics: 1964–2024 features artists including André Franquin, Gotlib, Claire Bretécher, Osamu Tezuka, Moebius, Edmond Baudoin, Alison Bechdel, Ulli Lust, Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi and Chris Ware, as well as introductions on each theme by leading authorities of the form, a brand new interview with renowned cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco, and a foreword by Paul Gravett.

Ben Mauro
ID: 18840
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A gripping, post-apocalyptic sci-fi graphic novel from acclaimed universe-builder Ben Mauro, perfect for fans of Dune and Star Wars

Built on the ashes of a nuclear holocaust, a once thriving world ruined by generations of planetary wars now lays in perpetual waste. To save humanity from itself, the remaining A.I. bred and cloned elite humans as workers, soldiers and enforcers – armoured warriors known as Ronin – to help keep order and give humanity a purpose in this new world. After a certain age, the clones start to think for themselves and are sent on increasingly dangerous missions until they are killed or ‘retired’, replaced by younger and more compliant clones until the cycle repeats itself again.

While humanity limps on in this new world, the lives of two soldiers, Max and Kai, become irreversibly intertwined on a routine mission upon discovering an ancient sentient robot known as Huxley in the wastelands of a desolate planet. These two post-apocalyptic scavengers suddenly find themselves thrust into a mystery of a galactic scale and as the saga unfolds, the reader begins to unravel Huxley's true purpose. Ben Mauro’s stunning debut adventure sets the stage for an exciting new sci-fi universe for readers and fans of the genre to enjoy and fall in love with.

The magic and mastery of anime springs to life in this gorgeous celebration of the genre

A uniquely powerful form of artistic expression, anime has embraced complex and provocative ideas since its inception in the mid twentieth century.

This dynamic and wide-ranging book explores eighty key themes of the genre, from wars to natural disasters, nature to ecology, childhood to magic, dystopias to fables. It looks at more than one hundred masterpieces of Japanese animation, including Akira, Ghost in the Shell, One Piece, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies and Howl’s Moving Castle, to show how practitioners consistently balance tradition with modernity and how anime’s distinct style has influenced other forms of media such as video games, comic books and live-action films.

Covering an enormous range of talent — from Isao Takahata, Katsuhiro Ôtomo, and Makoto Shinkai to Studio Ghibli and Mamoru Oshii — it demonstrates how anime makes room for limitless creativity. Unfettered by the physical constraints of nature’s laws, these artists realize our deepest emotions and our wildest dreams.

About the Author:

Nathalie Bittinger is a senior lecturer in film studies at the University of Strasbourg, France. She has published several books on Asian cinema.
