Haruki Murakami's best-loved stories finally in graphic novel form!

Haruki Murakami's novels, essays and short stories have sold millions of copies worldwide and been translated into scores of languages. Now for the first time, in this three-volume series, Murakami's best-loved stories are available in manga form in English.

With their trademark mix of realism and fantasy, centering around Murakami's signature themes of loss, remorse and confusion. The three stories in this volume are:

- The Second Bakery Attack: A newlywed couple lie in bed, hungry. The man tells his wife about when he and a friend robbed a bakery and stole bread to feed themselves for two days. On hearing this story, the woman suggests they try the same thing again.
" […] exemplifies Murakami's sense of the fragility of the ordinary world." —Kirkus Reviews

- Samsa in Love: An extension of the tale of Gregor Samsa in Kafka's The Metamorphosis. The main character wakes up to find himself transformed into someone named Samsa, then falls in love with a hunchback woman who comes to fix the lock on his door.
"Samsa in Love is part of a lineage, going back to the original publication of The Metamorphosis in 1915 and extending up to (and beyond?) the present day." —Los Angeles Times

- Thailand: A middle-aged woman takes a break from her job as a doctor to go on holiday in Thailand. She learns from a spirit doctor that her sterile life and inability to forgive have created a rock in her gut, which will be all that remains of her after she is dead.
"His characters are so persuasive, and the storytelling so spacious.… Murakami's crisp, accomplished stories…have great immediacy." —The Seattle Times

These new graphic versions of classic Murakami short stories will be devoured by his fans and will provide a new window onto his work for a new generation of readers not yet familiar with it!

A rich, vibrantly illustrated account of the history and sources of manga

Manga has attained phenomenal worldwide success in recent years, and shows no signs of slowing down. As contemporary as this graphic artform may appear to readers outside of Japan, manga is the fruit of a long artistic tradition. Manga as we know it today is deeply rooted in ancient Japanese culture, and traces can be found in seventh-century temple paintings, folding screens decorated with comical characters, and painted scrolls. The more familiar manga comics of today, aimed at a broad audience of adults as well as children, echo similar themes and draw on narrative forms from throughout Japan’s rich history.

This book spans the history of manga in all its splendour and diversity. From Hokusai’s seminal Manga of 1814 to the genre-shaping works of Tezuka Osamu, from the friendly ghosts and monsters created by Mizuki Shigeru to huge franchises such as One Piece and Demon Slayer, every period is covered. One Thousand Years of Manga is both a rich documentary account and a visual delight packed with over 400 illustrations, demonstrating how this mass-produced medium has become a key facet of Japanese culture that is now enjoyed across the globe.

Contents List:

1. The Origins of Manga
2. The Magic of the Scroll: From the Earliest Caricatures to the Onset of the Comic Strip
3. The Birth of the Japanese Print: The Golden Age of Caricature
4. The Dawn of a New Type of Caricature: Japan Opens Up to the West
5. The Rise of the Comic Strip to the Second World War
6. Tezuka Osamu: The ‘God’ of the Modern Manga
7. Manga Today
8. Selected Portraits of Manga Artists
9. From Manga to Anime: The Work of Studio Ghibli
10. Reciprocal Influences

_________

In recent years, Manga has seen phenomenal success, not only in Japan, where it dominates the publishing industry, but also in the West, where it is steadily growing in popularity and influence. As swift and sudden as the popularity of this graphic art form may seem, Manga has, in fact, deep roots in Japanese culture, drawing on centuries-old artistic traditions. As early as the twelfth century, Emakimono scrolls existed, a narrative form in which stories of all kinds - romantic, fantastic, even comic - were told through the combined use of text and illustration. Japanese art continued to change as profound political, social, and economic transformations remade the country in the centuries to follow. Today there is little doubt as to the meaning of the term Manga - nor to the astonishing popularity of the form - but few in the West understand the long artistic history that gave birth to this phenomenon and the social factors that continue to shape it today. One Thousand Years of Manga is both an informative account of the genesis of the form and a visual delight.

Through its captivating illustrations and enlightening text, the book situates Manga in its proper context, appreciating it for what it truly is: an integral part of Japanese art and culture that is as rich and revealing as it is popular.

The story of manga, a vibrant form of Japanese narrative art, from its historic roots to its place as a contemporary global phenomenon

Manga is a visual form of narrative storytelling. Its roots are international, but the form as we know it today developed in Japan between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has recently achieved global reach. Originally confined to comics, prints and graphic novels, manga has expanded to influence animation, fashion, gaming, street art and new media. It is a multi-billion-pound industry, popular with people of all ages in Japan and increasingly all over the world, encompassing hundreds of themes from gender to adventure, in real or imagined worlds. There is a manga for everyone.

For manga fans, this book celebrates the excitement of manga’s cross-cultural appeal and its long history of breaking barriers. For those new to manga, it offers the chance to acquire literacy in what is fast becoming a universal visual grammar for our globalized age.

Arranged into six thematic chapters, with essays by leading scholars, this volume showcases the work of Japan’s most influential mangaka (manga creators) past and present, with printed manga extracts, original drawings, manga magazines, theatre, film, digital technologies and exclusive interviews with artists, editors and publishers.

Published in conjunction with a landmark exhibition at the British Museum, this is manga as Western audiences have never before seen it: diverse yet universally familiar, traditional yet intensely modern, rooted in the 2D printed page but effortlessly leaping out of it.

Contents List:

Introduction • 1. Understanding Manga through Reading, Drawing and Producing 2. The Power of Storytelling • 3. The Power of Seen and Unseen Worlds • 4. Manga and Society • 5. Motion through Line • 6. Expanding Manga’s Boundaries

Hokusai

A stylish three-volume boxed set of Katsushika Hokusai’s renowned manga drawings considered a precursor of contemporary manga

In 1814, the great Japanese artist and printmaker Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) published the first volume of a handbook of his sketches: Hokusai Manga. Originally designed as a reference for his students to emulate, it surpassed all expectations and became a bestseller, eventually expanding to 15 volumes and over 4,000 images.

This three-volume edition is an extensive selection of Hokusai’s sketches, which present all the themes, motifs and techniques found in his art. Although they are not based around an ongoing narrative, the caricatures, satirical drawings and multi-panel illustrations can clearly be seen as a forerunner of manga as it is understood today.

Volume 1 explores Edo Life, the everyday world of the city that would later become Tokyo, featuring people from all walks of life at work and at play. Volume 2 is devoted to The Wonders of Nature, including animals, birds and fish as well as landscapes, weather and scenes of natural beauty. Finally, volume 3, Flights of Fancy, is packed with mythical creatures, supernatural beings and all sorts of weird and wonderful imagery from the master’s imagination. This collection has enchanted and inspired artists and art-lovers for two centuries and is now ripe for rediscovery.

Contents List:

Volume 1: The Life and Manners of the Day • Volume 2: The Whole Earth Catalogue Volume 3: Fanciful, Mythical and Supernatural

About the Author:

Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

The legendary masterpieces of Hokusai-fifteen volumes in a single chunky book.

Hokusai Manga is one of the masterpieces by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), a master of Ukiyo-e art, depicting ordinary people’s lives, animals, plants, landscapes and human figures, historical and supernatural, even demons and monsters, as if it were a visual encyclopedia, amounting to fifteen volumes.

Hokusai Manga turned out to be very popular among every class of people, from feudal lords to the general public, and became a long-time best-seller in the Edo period.

This book selects pieces from each volume and compiles them into one charming book.

The original masterpiece spread throughout Japan and flowed into Europe in the middle of the nineteenth century, where it had a striking impact on artists, including Impressionists Manet, Monet, Degas, and others. The artistic movement ‘Japonisme’ began in part due to its influence.
