The seminal surrealist. Exploring Dalí's grandiose and grotesque oeuvre

Picasso called Dalí "an outboard motor that’s always running." Dalí thought himself a genius with a right to indulge in whatever lunacy popped into his head. Painter, sculptor, writer, and filmmaker, Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of the century’s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics — and was rewarded with fierce controversy wherever he went. He was one of the first to apply the insights of Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis to the art of painting, approaching the subconscious with extraordinary sensitivity and imagination.

About the authors:

Robert Descharnes, a photographer and writer, has published studies of major artists, among them Antoni Gaudí and Auguste Rodin. Since 1950, he has been documenting and cataloguing Dalí's paintings and writings and is now considered the leading expert on the artist.

Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. The distinctive and technically outstanding visual language of the paintings of young Greek artist Stelios Faitakis skillfully combines the depiction of modern subjects with the influence of Byzantine, Russian, and Eastern iconic painting. The trademarks of his work are the intensive use of the color gold and images of halos, which were prevalent in medieval painting styles. Faitakis´s perspectives are unsettling, his content provocative. Studio Olafur Eliasson is an experimental laboratory located in Berlin. Led by renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, it functions as an interdisciplinary space, generating fresh dialogues between art and its surroundings. Emotional intelligence. A synthesis of form and feeling

First applied to the poems of Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine in 1886, the term symbolist was soon applied to the visual arts where a realistic depiction of the natural world gave way to imaginary dream scenes of psychological, sexual, and mystical content.

Symbolism was a broad international phenomenon but particularly present in France, where painters such as Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon turned their backs on realism, naturalism, and impressionism to populate their canvases with esoteric, often erotic, visions. In place of Monet s light-suffused landscapes or the frank working-class subjects of Courbet, the Symbolists turned to figures from literature, the Bible, and Greek mythology to express experiences of love, fear, anguish, death, sexual awakening, and unrequited desire.

This exhibition is the first solo presentation and one of the most important to be held in Europe on the work of the Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral (Capivari, São Paolo,1886-1973), a key figure in Brazilian painting and responsible for the introduction of the European avant-garde into that country. The exhibition has been devised and organised by the Fundación Juan March and is co-produced with the Fundación Caixa Galicia.The exhibition focuses on the work of the artist s dazzling middle period in the 1920s, when she lived between São Paolo and Paris, with a symbolic conclusion in Moscow (where she travelled in 1931). It emphasises her connections with the avant-garde in Paris, her training with painters such as André Lhote and Fernand Léger, and her friendship with some of the French avant-garde poets, in particular Blaise Cendrars. The exhibition comprises 50 paintings and drawings, most of them on loan from Brazilian museums and private collections, with the exception of three works from the Musée de Grenoble, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. It also features an introductory room that sets the artist in her context and offers an overview of the Brazilian art scene in the 1920s with works by some of the most important figures in modern Brazilian art as well as documentary material.

The third in the multi-volume series on Warhol's complete artworks.

The sculpture and paintings of 1970–74 are the subject of this third volume of the catalogue dedicated to publishing the complete paintings, sculptures and drawings of Andy Warhol (1928–87). As authoritative and detailed as the highly praised first two volumes, here Warhol's sculptures and paintings of these four years are comprehensively catalogued and illustrated. Early in this period Warhol was concentrating on film and sculpture, as he had been since being shot in 1968, but by late 1971 or early 1972 he was returning to painting and developing his painterly, 'sloppy and fast' style. The volume covers major sculptures, such as the Rain Machine, the series of paintings Mao and Man Ray, and commissioned portraits of important, celebrated and fashionable people of the day – many from Warhol's travels through Europe during this time. It is a time of great transition for Warhol, including developing his relationships with various media and the impact of his first purchase of a Big Shot Polaroid camera. His diaries and the photographs he took on travels and of his subjects enliven the narrative and give intriguing insights into his works of these years and his unique engagement with the culture and society of that time.

About the Authors:

Neil Printz, co-edited the first two volumes of the Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné. Paintings and Sculpture, 1961-1963 and Paintings and Sculptures, 1964-1969. He is the Editor of Volume 3: Paintings and Sculptures, 1970-1974 and currently preparing Volume 4: Paintings and Sculpture, late 1974-1976.

Sally King-Nero is executive editor of the Warhol Catalogue Raisonné and Curator of Drawings and Photographs at the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York.

Under the rule of Henry VII (r. 1485-1509) England became a powerful nation. The Tudor court sought to express its worldliness and political clout through major artistic commissions, employing Florentine sculptors and painters to create lavish new interiors, suitable for entertaining foreign dignitaries, for its royal palaces. These were exemplified by Henry VIII's palace of Nonsuch, so named because no other palace could match its magnificence. Italian sculpture, painting, and tapestries of the day reflected an interest in portraiture and dynastic monuments, epitomized in England by the royal tomb projects created by Baccio Bandinelli, Benedetto da Rovezzano, and Pietro Torrigiani.

Generously illustrated throughout, The Anglo-Florentine Renaissance traces the artistic links between Medicean Florence and Tudor England through essays by an international team of scholars and explores how the language of Florentine art effectively expressed England's political aspirations and rose to prominence as a new international courtly style.

A prominent figure in the Victorian art world, Walter Crane not only participated in the late nineteenth century's publishing revolution but also led the way toward the Golden Age of Illustration. Crane was instrumental in the transition from simple black-and-white illustrations for children's books to gallery-quality artwork. This original collection features more than one hundred of the influential artist's brilliant images. It constitutes a survey of his paintings as well as a visual history of the development of the first color illustrations.
Few artists of Crane's generation achieved careers as varied and successful as his. This compilation reflects the diversity of his subjects, from images for alphabet books, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales to scenes from stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood to illustrations inspired by the classics of Shakespeare, Hawthorne, and Spenser. To the general public, Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is perhaps best known for his posters of Sarah Bernhardt and magnificent decorative panels such as "The Seasons" — works that continue to grow in popularity and value as the resurgence of interest in Art Nouveau increases. Among graphic artists and commercial designers, Mucha is praised for the innovative style books that pioneered the use of Art Nouveau in commercial packaging, design, and ornament.

The most important of these style books was Documents Décoratifs, published in 1901 at the height of Mucha's fame as the high priest of the Art Nouveau movement. While the artist's fame rests largely on his posters, it is in the smaller works of the style books, or design portfolios, that the refinement of his technique can best be appreciated. The present volume, carefully reproduced from an extremely rare and valuable set of originals, contains all 72 plates of the Documents Décoratifs portfolio. Included are designs for jewellery, wallpaper, stained glass, furniture, and tableware; figure and botanical studies; and a selection of Mucha's famous panneaux décoratifs. Eighteen of the plates are in full colour, while the remaining 54 are reproduced in two or more colour tones.

In addition to numerous innovative designs for practical and decorative objects, the elegant craftsmanship and meticulous execution that characterized all of Mucha's work is evident in studies of langorous nudes, portrait sketches, delicately rendered plant and animal motifs, exquisite modelling of drapery and cloth, and the flowing, fantastic forms created as experiments in pure design. In the Foreword by Gabriel Mourey, specially translated for this edition, Mucha's own philosophy of art, and the relation of the Documents to the rest of his work, receive an appreciative and informative discussion.

Hitherto available only in scattered sources, or in the libraries of wealthy collectors, the complete Documents Décoratifs is now available in this inexpensive one-volume edition. Lovers of Mucha's work, admirers of Art Nouveau, and the application of that style to the decorative arts, will want to own this fine royalty-free collection by one of the greatest masters of the technique.

English illustrator and author Aubrey Beardsley (1872–98) was a leading figure of the Aesthetic Movement and the most controversial artist of the 1890s.
