The Many Facets of Niki de Saint Phalle

Niki de Saint Phalle loved pseudo-orders, which she used to arbitrarily assemble terms and pictograms on a sheet of paper. Under the heading “I Love,” for example, the sign of a snake could be found next to the emblem for justice, an orange spot for the corresponding color next to two stars as a symbol for astrology. Niki de Saint Phalle A–Z takes the same liberty and puts the many facets of Niki de Saint Phalle’s work into the order of the alphabet. This logical order is deceptive, though. From A as in AIDS to Z as in Zurich Angel, from B as in Bride to V as in Vanitas, a mosaic of concepts emerges that filters out the various levels of meaning in her manifold oeuvre and playfully engages them in mutual commentary.

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was one of the most important artists and sculptors of her generation. Growing up in Paris and New York, she returned to Paris in the 1950s, where she began her artistic career with her legendary “shooting” series. Her sensual female figures, the Nanas, gained her widespread popularity. 

About the Author: 

Art scholar Katharina Sykora (*1955) was a professor at the University of Bochum and Braunschweig University of Art from 1994 to 2018. Her fields of research include the construction of authorship, gender and transmediality.

The Curious Desert was the first solo exhibition of Olafur Eliasson’s work in the Gulf region, staged in March 2023.

The exhibition brought together a dozen new site-specific installations located in the desert, near the Al Thakhira Mangrove in Northern Qatar, and an extensive gallery presentation at the National Museum of Qatar of artworks created over the artist’s career.
The outdoor installation consisted of 12 temporary pavilions that Eliasson considers to form an artistic laboratory in the desert. Many of the experiments inside the pavilions utilised natural phenomena, such as wind, water, and sunlight, to create artworks that emerged over the course of the day or, as the seasons change, over the duration of the exhibition.

At the National Museum of Qatar, the gallery exhibition featured a variety of artworks from different periods of Eliasson’s career and in a wide range of media, including expansive light installations, complex geometric models, photo series from Iceland, watercolours, optical devices and an extensive map of the research areas that occupy the artist and his studio. The themes that run throughout the two-part exhibition relate to the broad interests expressed in Eliasson’s wider practice.

The Art of Transformation

Using her own body as raw material for her artistic practice, French artist Orlan deconstructs the traditional iconography of the feminine. In the 1990s, ORLAN caused a sensation with surgical operations performed on her body, but it was as early as 1964, at the age of 17, that she gave birth to her artistic self. Since then, she has continuously recreated herself and keenly explored the concept of identity. In her “carnal art,” the body becomes both subject and object. This publication traverses the six decades of Orlan’s oeuvre, revisiting her early performances in particular. One of her most recent creations is the ORLAN-OÏDE robot, and thanks to an augmented reality app, Orlan avatars come to life and emerge from this richly illustrated volume. The political status of the body is made evident through all of her works: in 1989 she transformed Gustave Courbet’s famous painting L’origine du monde into L’origine de la guerre by replacing the vulva with the phallus. The statement has not lost any of its topicality.

A Mosaic of Femininity

Founded in 1984 by women around Gabriele Stötzer, the Erfurt Women Artists’ Group pursued a radically creative lifestyle to counter the rigid structures of everyday life in the GDR, over a period of ten years. Subversive, witty, borne of a liberating sense of defiance against normative gender roles, their artistic expressions provide an insight into the little-known feminist subculture in the GDR. Richard Hambleton (1954–2017) was a Canadian artist known for his pioneering street art. He was a surviving member of a group that emerged from the New York City art scene during the booming art market of the 1980s, which also included his close friends Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

As a conceptual artist, Hambleton’s early work installations titled “Image Mass Murder” from 1976–1979 were secretly placed onto streets in over 15 cities, depicting chalk-body outlines and blood-splattered crime scenes of what appeared to be “victims.” This theme of a prevailing violence, fear, and morbid curiosity elicited surprise and anxiety from its unsuspecting viewers. In the early 1980s, Hambleton created his most iconic “Shadow Man” works — artfully splattered ominous shadowy figures on unexpected street corners, walls, and alleys that startled viewers into a visceral awareness that the city was still a dangerous place.

This book features over 200 images including his early “Shadow Man” canvas paintings, as well as photographs of his in situ street work, a selection of his “Marlboro” rodeo horse silhouettes, and his “Beautiful Paintings” series of landscapes and seascapes, alongside other works on paper; behind-the-scenes studio shots; personal, unseen photographs of the artist; and inspirational imagery. Hambleton was renowned for influencing artists such as Banksy, Blek le Rat, and Shepard Fairey. Murtaza Vali is a writer and curator based between Brooklyn and Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Sean Anderson is associate professor and director of the undergraduate program in architecture at Cornell University. Jyoti Dhar is an art critic and editor based in Dubai. Catherine David is an art historian, curator, and former director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at Centre Pompidou in Paris.

An influential figure in Eastern Europe’s 1960s neo-avantgarde, Stano Filko synthesized Dada, Pop Art, Fluxus, and Conceptual Art into a universalist vision of art and life. Influenced by subjects such as modernist architecture and mathematical algorithms, but also by spiritual transcendence and the cosmos, he designed pneumatic objects and interactive environments, assemblages, text-based works, performances, and happenings that attempted to circumvent state repression. Having fled to West Germany in 1981, Filko exhibited at documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982, and then relocated to New York, where he took up Neo-Expressionist painting, embracing a rainbow-colored chakra system, System SF, that he explored for the rest of his life. Not least thanks to his curiosity, experimental approach, and self-criticism Filko’s works sustain a character of contemporaneity and remain meaningful today.

Stano Filko (1937, Veľká Hradná–2015, Bratislava) was considered one of the most influential Slovakian artists from the 1960s until his death. Following achievements as a conceptual artist, he became “persona non grata” as a result of the suppression brought about by the Prague Spring in 1968. After having managed to escape to West Germany in 1981, he relocated to New York in 1982. In 1990 he returned to Bratislava, where he transformed his Snesčenkova studio house into a Gesamtkunst- werk designed according to the principles of his System SF.
