Foreword by Larry Gagosian, Text by Jerry Speyer and Nicholas Baume and Jerome de Noirmont and Laurent Le Bon
ID: 16203
Издательство: Rizzoli

Published on the occasion of the installation of Jeff Koons' Split-Rocker at Rockefeller Center in New York City in association with Gagosian Gallery, this colorful new book will appeal to any fan of Koons' work, as well as those interested in contemporary art and landscape architecture.

Consistent with Koons's persistent fascination with dichotomy and the in-between, the inspiration for Split-Rocker came when he decided to split and combine two similar but different toy rockers, a pony belonging to his son and a dinosaur ("Dino"). The slippage or "split" between the different halves of the heads gives an almost Cubist aspect to the composition. As the model was enlarged to the scale of a small house, the split became an opening, a profile, and a light shaft.

Jeff Koons is largely regarded as one of the most important yet controversial artists of the postwar era. His art has appeared at galleries and museums worldwide, and the subject of the beautiful new book is no exception. Since its creation in 2000, Split-Rocker has appeared at Palais des Papes, Avignon in 2000; and subsequently at Château de Versailles (2008) and Fondation Beyeler (2012). It is also in the collection of the Glenstone private museum in Potomac, Maryland, where it has been on view since June of 2013. This catalogue features images and discussions of all of these installations, including Split-Rocker's most recent exhibition at New York City's Rockefeller Center in 2014.

Author Richard Calvocoressi and Mark Stevens, Contributions by Jenny Saville and Sally Mann and Lauren Mahony
ID: 15992
Издательство: Rizzoli

The most comprehensive monograph on figurative painter Jenny Saville, whose large-scale nudes continue to challenge accepted ideals of beauty.

Thirteen years after her first Rizzoli monograph, British artist Jenny Saville, an original member of the Young British Artists, releases her most definitive book, including never-before-published paintings from her most recent exhibition at Gagosian in New York. This much-anticipated volume unites new work with many of Saville's paintings and drawings to date, accompanied by essays that explore Saville's continuing fascination with the human body within a broad art-historical context. The book also features Saville in an extensive conversation with acclaimed American photographer Sally Mann. An illustrated chronology of Saville's career completes this elegant volume. This beautifully produced monograph is an important addition to the library on one of the world's most influential and enduring living painters.

About the Authors:

Jenny Saville received her B.A. Honors Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art, Scotland. Saville's works are featured in several public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Broad, Los Angeles; and Saatchi Collection, London. Richard Calvocoressi is a director and senior curator at Gagosian Gallery, London. John Elderfield
ID: 17824
Издательство: Rizzoli

Oxyrhynchus is a city in upper Egypt that was established in 332 BC and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites ever discovered. Saville references the layer upon layer of discoveries at Oxyrhynchus in her new body of work, the final effect being a mysterious narrative of layered bodies and images. The dozen new works presented are a combination of oil, charcoal, and pastel on canvas and a combination of landscape and figures weaving throughout each other.

About the Author:

John Elderfield, a consultant at Gagosian Gallery, is Chief Curator Emeritus of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, where he directed numerous celebrated exhibitions, among them Kurt Schwitters, Henri Matisse: A Retrospective, and De Kooning: A Retrospective. In 2005, Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People of the Year; and in 2006 he was made Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.

The first major monograph on Turner Prize–nominated Glasgow artist Jim Lambie.

This long-awaited volume surveys the career of Glasgow-based contemporary sculptor Jim Lambie. From his distinctive floor works, striped from wall to wall with vibrant electrical tape, to his paint-soaked mattresses, Lambie adroitly sculpts humor and pathos from the clutter of modern life. Working with items immediately at hand, as well as those sourced in secondhand and hardware stores, he resurrects record decks, speakers, clothing, accessories, doors, and mirrors to form sculptural elements in larger compositions.

Lambie prioritizes sensory pleasure over intellectual response. He selects materials that are familiar and have a strong personal resonance, so that they offer a way into the work as well as a springboard to a psychological space beyond. This volume not only serves as a definitive mid-career survey but also as a major reframing of the artist’s work. Lambie’s practice has long been understood through the lens of punk and rock music, a frequent theme of his works’ titles. Here the artist and new essays instead trace his approach to the rich material histories he mines and the scrappy, resourceful spirit of his hometown, Glasgow.

About the Author:

Daniel Baumann is the director of Kunsthalle Zürich. He previously served as curator of the Adolf Wölfli Foundation, located at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bern, Switzerland.

Jim Shaw, Jessica Beck, Rachel Kushner, Jonathan Lethem
ID: 17275
Издательство: Rizzoli

Thinking the Unthinkable documents Jim Shaw’s inaugural exhibition with Gagosian and features an essay by Jessica Beck, new fiction from Jonathan Lethem, and a conversation between the artist and Rachel Kushner.

For over three decades, Jim Shaw has found inspiration in comics, pulp novels, album covers, and amateur paintings. His densely layered and humorous works span painting, drawing, and sculpture, and juxtapose images of friends, family, and dreams, with world events, pop culture, and alternative realities.

Published to coincide with Thinking the Unthinkable (2023) in Beverly Hills, Shaw’s first exhibition with Gagosian, this expansive and vibrantly illustrated catalogue delves into the secret histories of psychedelic therapy, Hollywood legend, and nuclear war—themes that all coalesce in the artist’s recent works.

An essay by Gagosian director Jessica Beck discusses Shaw’s hallucinogenic depictions of Cary Grant, Esther Williams, and Jeff Chandler. A conversation with author Rachel Kushner ranges from the artist’s formative years to the early weaponization of LSD. In Jim Shaw Kills, new fiction written by Jonathan Lethem, a miniaturized version of Shaw is dispatched into the comatose body of an ex-president.

About the Authors:

Jim Shaw (b. 1952) lives and works in Los Angeles. He has had exhibitions at museums including CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, France; MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA; and New Museum, New York. His work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; and Centre Pompidou, Paris, amongst others.

Jessica Beck is a director at Gagosian. Formerly, she was the Milton Fine curator of art at the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, where she curated many projects, most notably Andy Warhol: My Perfect Body (2016).

The Architecture of Empathy is the title of a marble statue by John Isaacs and at the same time the basic attitude and raw material of all his works. The British artist made a name for himself as a Young British Artist around Damien Hirst in the 1990s with his hyper-realistic wax sculptures. Conscious about not locking himself into one style, he experiments with a wide variety of materials and techniques, from ceramics, neon, bronze, marble and sculpture to photography. This richly illustrated publication is the first comprehensive overview of his work from the 90s to the present, and reveals not just his broad reaching multifaceted technical scope, but also his psycho-anthropological poetic through numerous essays and conversations with companions.

John Mellencamp, Louis A. Zona, David L. Shirey, Bob Guccione Jr.
ID: 16139
Издательство: Rizzoli

Longtime music icon John Mellencamp’s artistic expression has never been limited to song.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter John Mellencamp has been an accomplished painter for more than four decades. This definitive survey — curated by Mellencamp himself — of his large-scale oil portraits and mixed-media assemblages documents America’s heart and soul, revealing unsettling but beautiful truths with an antiestablishment frown and a rich sense of narrative.

“Although we may primarily know Mellencamp as a rock star, one of the highest-selling of all time and a Hall of Famer, he is also a great painter, as this book shows. Not a musician who also paints... No, John legitimately belongs in the modern art pantheon,” says Bob Guccione Jr. in his essay that delineates the connection of Mellencamp’s music and art, both imbued with the earnest voice of America’s heartland.

About the Authors:

John Mellencamp, award-winning singer-songwriter and member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is also a painter, collector, and longtime activist who has exhibited his work in galleries and museums across the United States. Dr. Louis A. Zona is the executive director and chief curator of the Butler Institute of American Art, in Youngstown, Ohio. David L. Award-winning editor and publisher Bob Guccione Jr. has created and managed some of America’s most iconic publishing brands, including Spin magazine and Gear magazine.

Haring as activist and egalitarian: a fresh, accessible and dynamic look at one of New York’s most exhilarating artists.

Lavishly illustrated with essays and reflections by cultural leaders, Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody surveys Haring’s dynamic art practice from 1978 to 1990, shining a bright light on the iconic and beloved artist known for his fluid, uniform lines, intricate compositions and repeating imagery such as the barking dog and radiant baby. Forty years after he came to prominence, Haring’s art continues to garner worldwide recognition, breaking down barriers and spreading joy, while taking on complex issues that remain crucial today, from environmentalism, capitalism and the proliferation of new technologies to religion, sexuality and race.

Titled after a quote from Haring’s journals, Art Is for Everybody centers on the artist’s activism, the emphasis he placed on community and his egalitarian approach to art and life. The volume is organized chronologically and thematically, emphasizing Haring’s work made with publics in mind such as the subway drawings and murals, his collaborative practice and his unflinching belief that art is essential in making a better world.

Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and arrived in New York from Pittsburgh in 1978, befriending artists including Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During the 1980s, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. After contracting HIV in 1988, he focused his activism on the AIDS crisis. Less than two years later, Haring died of an AIDS-related illness.

Thurstan Redding
ID: 15379
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A bold, surreal photographic celebration of the fantastical beauty of cosplay, in which seventy cosplayers leave behind their everyday existence and become heroes for a day

In the surreal, transfixing photographic universe of Thurstan Redding, everyday existence collides with colourful fantasy as 70 cosplayers become heroes for a day: Spider-Man is illuminated by the electric glow of an open fridge; three Alices wait at a bus stop in a desolate Wonderland; and a Resistance Pilot plays dead on the gravel driveway of a suburban housing estate. Insights from the cosplayers themselves are supplemented with commentary by fashion stylist and editor Katie Grand, author and musician Tom Rasmussen and fashion writer Sara McAlpine on the expressive craft and inclusive community of cosplay.

Whether it is becoming a fictional character or presenting the ‘you’ the world sees, the craft of cosplay is everywhere. A powerful expression of individuality and diversity, cosplay is a global phenomenon that allows a large number of diverse individuals to join together in one single chaotic but inclusive community. Cosplay allows anyone to become a hero for a day.

After attending a cosplay convention in 2018, photographer Thurstan Redding became captivated by cosplay as a subject matter and embarked on a three-year photographic project to portray cosplay in a way it had never been seen before. In this bold and surprising volume, he captures the transfixing world of cosplay. Brought to life through the presentation of 70 cosplayers in the most unassuming of locations, this exceptional book highlights how creativity can thrive in the most mundane realities: Spider-Man is illuminated by the open fridge in the kitchen, three Alices wait at a bus stop in a desolate Wonderland, Resistance Pilot plays dead on the gravel driveway of a suburban housing estate. Supplemented by commentary from the cosplayers themselves, together with behind-the-scenes pages from Thurstan’s personal diary, Kids of Cosplay is ‘a celebration of ... fandom and allows a glimpse into the world where people are united by their celebration of an art which transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary’ (The Independent).

A foreword by fashion powerhouse Katie Grand, an essay by writer and performer Tom Rasmussen, who discusses the social and cultural context of cosplay, and an illuminating interview with Redding by noted fashion writer Sara McAlpine complete this compelling volume. Sometimes, all it takes is to scratch the surface of our realities to reveal the fantasy that lies beneath.

About the Author:

Thurstan Redding is a British photographer and director, born in Hong Kong and raised in France, whose work applies a cinematic lens to subcultural subject matter. Since graduating from the University of Cambridge, where he read Politics, Psychology and Sociology, he has contributed to VogueWSJLe MondeArena Homme +i-D and Dazed. He has also shot campaigns for clients including Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace and Miu Miu.

You can find him on the stage or in front of a film camera, in the director’s chair or at the mixing board ― Lars Eidinger has many faces, and not just as an actor. His performances testify to a sheer, inexhaustible energy that makes every appearance a tour de force that infects and electrifies the audience in an almost magical way. No less can be expected from his photographic works, which are gathered together here for the first time in a publication. As diverse as the subjects of the pictures are, they still allow us to recognise Eidinger’s signature: elements of fi m and theatre unite to form a unique rhythm that transforms the everyday into a paradoxical world essence. Only one word can suitably describe the richness of these visual spheres and the way of seeing that they articulate: epic.

Lars Eidinger (*1967, Berlin) is one of Germany’s best-known actors. Berliners can experience him close-up as a member of the Schaubühne’s ensemble, while an international audience will know him from his film performances. Autistic Disco is the title of both his photographic work and his DJ set.

Laurie Anderson
ID: 16041
Издательство: Rizzoli

An icon of performance art and the indie-music world, this is the first book on the artist’s full career to date, as curated by the artist herself. Laurie Anderson is one of the most revered artists working today, and she is as prolific as she is inventive. She is a musician, performance artist, composer, fiction writer, and filmmaker (her most recent foray, Heart of a Dog, was lauded as an “experimental marvel” by the Los Angeles Times). Anderson moves seamlessly between the music world and the fine-art world while maintaining her stronghold in both. A true polymath, her interest in new media made her an early pioneer of harnessing technology for artistic purposes long before the technology boom of the last ten years. Regardless of the medium, however, it is exploration of language (and how it seeps into the image) and storytelling that is her métier.

A few years ago, Anderson began poring through her extensive archive of nearly forty years of work, which includes scores of documentation, notebooks, and sketchbooks. In the process, she rediscovered important work and looked at well-known projects with a new lens. In this landmark volume, the artist brings together the most comprehensive collection of her artwork to date, some of which has never before been seen or published. Spanning drawing, multimedia installations, performance, and new projects using augmented reality, the extensive volume traverses four decades of her groundbreaking art. Each chapter includes commentary written by Anderson herself, offering an intimate understanding of her work through the artist’s own words.

About the Author:

Laurie Anderson is a multimedia artist, musician (with more than seven albums), and filmmaker. She has exhibited widely around the world, including at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; the Musée d’art contemporain, Lyon, France; Fondazione Tramontano Arte, Naples; the Park Avenue Armory, New York; and MASS MoCa, North Adams, Massachusetts.

ID: 15728
Издательство: Rizzoli

The most comprehensive book on the work of Liza Lou, whose popular and critically acclaimed installations made entirely of beads consider the important themes of women, community, and the valorization of labor.

Liza Lou first gained attention in 1996 when her room-sized sculpture Kitchen was shown at the New Museum in New York. Representing five years of individual labor, this groundbreaking work subverted standards of art by introducing glass beads as a fine art material. The project blurred the rigid boundary between fine art and craft, and established Lou's long-standing exploration of materiality, process, and beauty. Working within a craft métier has led the artist to work in a variety of socially engaged settings, from community groups in Los Angeles, to a collective she founded in Durban, South Africa. Over the past fifteen years, Lou has focused on a poetic approach to abstraction as a way to highlight the process underlying her work.

In this comprehensive volume that considers the entirety of Lou’s singular vision, curators, art historians, and artists offer important perspectives on the breadth of the work.

About the Author:

Glenn Adamson is a curator and writer who works at the intersection of craft, design history, and contemporary art. Julia Bryan-Wilson is professor of modern and contemporary art at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Cathleen Chaffee is chief curator of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo. Elisabeth Sherman is assistant curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Carrie Mae Weems is an artist.

Louise Bourgeois, who has produced art since the 1930s, began in the 1990s to use her clothes and the clothes of her loved ones as components in her sculptures and drawings. It is as much a reincarnation of her past and her childhood as a confirmation of her relationship with memory. Her visual approach to fabrics transforms decorative accessories into emotional and personal references which, especially in her Cells and later in her drawings, create representations of a tormented and at the same time powerful womanhood. Further development of the artist’s work began in 2002: exploiting the iridescent colours and formal structural properties of pieces of her clothing, she created “The Fabric Drawings,” astonishing works alternating between floral figurative pieces and chromatic abstractions.

This set of images is collected here in its entirety for the first time, constituting the closest thing yet to a general catalogue.

• This collection of pictorial and sculptural images is brought together in this anthology in a unique and exhaustive way.
• The publication is a means of approaching her distinctive iconographic and visual explosions and adding to our knowledge of the artist herself.
• Bourgeois’s emotional and figurative strength, translated into compositions of colour and form, is further testimony to her important contribution to the history of modern and contemporary art.
