Many of the most famous Marilyn images were Milton Greene’s: the chiffon dress, the wicker chair, the red sweater; the Slip and Mink series; the White Series and the Black Series. Marilyn in the crux of an oak tree; Marilyn pulling up her stockings; the filming of Bus Stop and Showgirl. Nobody before and after photographed Marilyn as erotic, elegant, and seductive as Milton Greene. Composed by Milton’s son Joshua, this Marilyn classic is available again in its immortal beauty.

Before there was Marilyn, there was Norma Jeane. The photos and secret memoirs of Marilyn Monroe's first photographer and lifelong friend

Fashion photographer Andre de Dienes’s life was changed forever one day in 1945 when he met a lovely young aspiring model named Norma Jeane Dougherty. He instantly fell in love with her innocence and charm and the two were briefly engaged. They took many adventurous road trips together in those early years, de Dienes shooting Norma Jeane in every possible natural setting in his original, inspired style. He soon built up a huge portfolio of stunning photographs of the smiling brunette which helped to launch her model career and, a few years later, a film career that was to make her a legend.

His entire relationship with the star, including many private moments, shared only between the two, is detailed in de Dienes’s secret memoirs, which were discovered when Monroe fans ravaged his home after his death in 1988.

The memoirs tell a beautiful story of love and friendship from the point of view of someone who knew Marilyn intimately; describing the transformation from Norma Jeane to Marilyn Monroe — the evolution of a sensitive, ambitious girl into a deeply troubled megastar — from an inside perspective, they shed light on a little-known side of Marilyn. From their trip to see Norma Jeane’s mother in a mental hospital to Marilyn’s visit to his home a few days before her death, de Dienes recounts all of the emotional moments they shared. The combination of de Dienes’s memoirs and an extensive selection of his Monroe photographs (which numbered in the thousands) makes for an unprecedented, personal exploration into the psychology, history, and iconography of the world’s favourite movie star.

Norman Mailer, Bert Stern

Three legends. "Monroe" by Mailer and Stern.

Now TASCHEN has paired Mailer's original text with Bert Stern's photographs from the legendary "Last Sitting" - widely considered the most intimate photographs of Monroe ever taken - to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world's most famous, a symbol of glamour and criticism for an entire generation. But though she was feted and adored by her public, her private life was that of a little girl lost, desperate to find love and security.

Mailer's Marilyn is beautiful, tragic, and complex. As Mailer reflects upon her life - from her bleak childhood through to the mysterious circumstances of her death - she emerges as a symbol of the bizarre decade during which she reigned as Hollywood's greatest female star.

This book, conceived by Lawrence Schiller, Mailer's collaborator on five works, combines the author's masterful text with Stern's penetrating images of the 36-year-old Marilyn. Photographed for "Vogue" magazine over three days at the Bel-Air Hotel, Marilyn had never allowed such unfettered access, nor had she looked so breathtakingly beautiful. Six weeks later, mysteriously, she was dead. In this bold synthesis of literary classic and legendary portrait sitting, Mailer and Stern lift the veils of confusion surrounding Monroe - the woman, the star, the sex symbol - and offer profound insight into an iconic figure whose true personality remains an enigma even today.

First published as a TASCHEN limited collector's edition, this book is now available in a popular hardcover version, published on the 50th anniversary of Bert Stern's "Last Sitting" and of Marilyn Monroe's death, August 5, 1962.

MM - Personal is a new look behind the veil of that legend, reproducing the most fascinating relics from her private archive - once thought to have been lost, and never before revealed to the public - to clarify, qualify, or reverse many common conceptions about the “blond bombshell.”

Selected from more than 10,000 largely unseen and heretofore unpublished items from Marilyn’s own file cabinets, these documents, snapshots, letters, memorabilia, and ephemera are joined by the first account of Monroe’s life since Gloria Steinem’s Marilyn to be written by a feminist historian, revealing shades of her genius that have never before been fully understood.

"Forget everything you think you know about this person," Elia Kazan cautioned, in his autobiography. The icon we cherish under the name Marilyn Monroe was in truth the inspired creation of a smart, voluptuous, star struck and self-motivated fantasist named Norma Jean Mortenson. A pure product of Hollywood, she abides across time as brightly as two other self-inventors, Charlie Chaplin and Cary Grant. Few things make an afterlife blaze more mythically than a sexual reputation - ask Cleopatra. Norma Jean paid a huge price to become Marilyn, yet here she is - still setting the bar high for all other would-be goddesses.

The Movie Icon series: People talk about Hollywood glamour, about studios that had more stars than there are in heaven, about actors who weren't actors but were icons. Other people talk about these things, TASCHEN shows you. Movie Icons is a series of photo books that feature the most famous personalities in the history of cinema.
