Brian M. Viveros paints dangerous women. Often depicted helmeted and smoking, they sport bandages as if they had just been in a fight and won.

This first-ever monograph on this talented self-taught artist allows us to enter his fantasy world where women are sexy and powerful and men are nowhere to be seen.

From his first group exhibition 20 years ago, where his work was exhibited alongside the likes of H.R. Giger and Eric Stanton, his reputation among the art community and collectors alike has continued to grow.

Illustration’s Finest. A global compilation of 100 must-know artists

For all those who thought digital heralded the end of an era: illustration is alive and kicking, and new tools have given the art renewed vigour and the illustrator greater stamina. Steven Heller and Julius Wiedemann present a snapshot of “the new golden age of illustration,” rounding up 100 of the most talented artists around the world. We dare you to pick your favourites.

For the last ten years, Steven Heller and Julius Wiedemann have traced the latest developments in illustration across the globe — and for all those who thought digital heralded the end of an era, they’re here to set the record straight.

There were extraordinary eras before mass media changed our viewing habits, back in the day when illustration was the most primary means of illuminating the word on paper, to today when we get our words and images on screens as small as a watch face. And in this environment, today’s designers and artists are holding their own brilliantly. Illustration is more free and varied than ever, and it is ubiquitous in all kinds of media from paper to screen, books, packages, clothing, cars, and restaurants.

This book celebrates the sheer quality, diversity, intensity, comedy, vivacity, and exceptionality of the work being created by illustrators right now. From veteran artists like Brad Holland, whose oblique and metaphorical paintings for the New York Times’ op-ed section revolutionized illustrative content in the 1970s, to up-and-coming stars like Robin Eisenberg, her pastel-skinned alien belles cruising in spaceships on indie-rock album covers, the 100 artists in this collection are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, but they represent a compelling snapshot of the styles, techniques, and use of colour by artists across the world. We dare you to pick your favourites.

The Purple Book is a luxurious compendium of contemporary illustration that explores fantasy, sensuality and the erotic imagination. It highlights visual art and the written word as media for representing human desire’s relationship with the dream-state, make-believe and symbolism.

Much of the work by illustrators exploring these themes is unpublished, personal work, and many works here appear in print for the first time. As well as a treasury of portfolios by 21 of the very best international contemporary illustrators, a series of specially-commissioned works illustrate five classic literary texts that have inspired the themes of The Purple Book. The personalities behind this commissioned work are revealed through interviews with their creators, exploring the imaginative process behind their visual fantasies and how this translates into the final artwork.

The title of the book is inspired by The Yellow Book, the periodical published in the 1890s and initially art directed by Aubrey Beardsley. While the colour yellow represented the daringly salacious in the 1890s, today the colour purple is synonymous with opulence and sensuality.

This macabre tale — part dark fantasy, part Gray’s Anatomy — tells the chilling story of a man driven mad by his search for the truth, with hypnotic and horrifying images.

Philadelphia, the late 1870s. A city of gas lamps, cobblestone streets, and horse-drawn carriages — and home to the controversial surgeon Dr. Spencer Black. The son of a grave robber, young Dr. Black studies at Philadelphia’s esteemed Academy of Medicine, where he develops an unconventional hypothesis: that the mythological beasts of legend and lore — including mermaids, minotaurs, and satyrs — were in fact humanity’s evolutionary ancestors. And beyond that, he wonders: what if there was a way for humanity to reach the fuller potential these ancestors implied?

The Resurrectionist offers two extraordinary books in one. The first part is a fictional biography of Dr. Spencer Black, from his childhood spent exhuming corpses through his medical training, his travels with carnivals, his cruel and crazed experiments, and, finally, his mysterious disappearance. The second part is Black’s magnum opus: The Codex Extinct Animalia, a Gray’s Anatomy for mythological beasts, all rendered in meticulously detailed anatomical illustrations.

About the Author:

Eric was raised in Colorado but lived in several states throughout the U.S. while growing up. He worked as a snow and ice sculptor for nearly ten years, always writing and painting. His love for the arts led him all over the country and eventually to Pietrasanta, Italy where he worked as a marble sculptor. While in Italy, working on anatomy designs of impossible beings, he created the beginnings of what has become The Resurrectionist. Now living in New Jersey with his wife and two children, Eric continues to work as a professional artist.

The history of photography is teeming with portraits of musicians made iconic by their album covers: Thelonious Monk by W. Eugene Smith, Miles Davis by Irving Penn, Grace Jones by Jean-Paul Goude, Laurie Anderson by Robert Mapplethorpe.

The history of album cover art also includes collaborations between prominent figures, such as Mick Rock and David Bowie, Annie Leibovitz and John Lennon, Lee Friedlander and John Coltrane, Nobuyoshi Araki and Björk, Anton Corbijn and U2, and Robert Frank with the Rolling Stones ― not to mention Francis Wolff’s legendary work with Blue Note, the record label he cofounded.

Musicians and designers have also sifted through photography’s rich history for powerful photographs to match and keep company with the music enclosed within: Anders Petersen’s classic Café Lehmitz portrait of a man nestling into a woman’s bosom stands in for Tom Waits on the cover of Swordfishtrombones; Big Star and Alex Chilton push the listener into a corner with William Eggleston’s Red Ceiling on their album Radio City; Rage Against the Machine goes for the jugular on its self-titled album with the anonymous Vietnam War photo of the self-immolation of a Buddhist monk. Images like the Abbey Road crosswalk are deeply inscribed in our collective memory, yet few details are known about the photographer.

All of these ― and more ― are included in this compendium of electrifying images and the albums they grace. Includes albums featuring images by David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Anton Corbijn, Roy DeCarava, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Luigi Ghirri, Jean-Paul Goude, Brian Griffin, William Klein, David LaChapelle, Danny Lyon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Ryan McGinley, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Anders Petersen, Pierre et Gilles, Hiro, Cindy Sherman, W. Eugene Smith, Pennie Smith, Juergen Teller, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol, Albert Watson, William Wegman, and more.

Electronic and Mechanical Toys

Toys, fulfilling as they do one of mankind’s most basic needs, have existed for as long as we have. From the earliest times both adults and children have used toys to simulate reality or simply to pass time. Renowned designers, artists and architects have always tried their hand at creating toys: from Frank Lloyd Wright’s work with Fröbel’s building blocks to Josef Hartwig’s Bauhaus chess set that is still produced today. Gerrit Rietveld, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Breuer and Andy Warhol also designed toys. However, most often it was craftsmen and -women – such as the seamstress Margarete Steiff (Steiff teddy bears), the carpenters Christiansen (Lego), or the cabinet-maker Hans Beck (Playmobil) – who designed the most successful and enduring toys.

The title presents 115 products – from toy classics to brand new inventions, all with compelling shapes and functions. Introductory essays to each chapter presenting the history and significance of tricycles, play stores, etc., as well as a designer and retailer index round off the book. This makes it interesting to read for all toy lovers aged 0-99!
