An intimate meditation on love and loss from the acclaimed non-conformist photographer, featuring portraits of luminaries such as Vivienne Westwood

Throughout his 35-year career, Juergen Teller has been renowned for his non-conformist style, defying expectations with a unique combination of seriousness and self-irony, creating authentic narratives from his insatiable curiosity for life and the endlessly surprising world around him. i need to live, accompanying Teller’s major solo exhibition at the Grand Palais Éphémère, Paris, in 2023–24 and the Triennale Milano in 2024, captures the depth of his unmatched photographic achievement. Storytelling has always been integral to Teller’s practice, realized through the unconventional merging of his personal experience and commercial work in a range of genres: from portraiture and landscapes, to nudes, still lifes and the ever-changing self-portrait. This book embodies Teller’s interest in the unpredictable circle of life and a desire to explore his self and his familial relationships with a new poignancy — reflecting on the loss of close collaborators and friends including fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and gallerist Suzanne Tarasieve, while celebrating the arrival of his third child and the fruitful creative relationship with his wife and muse, Dovile Drizyte.

You have good experiences, bad experiences, funny experiences. Life is full of complexity, and I wanted to show that. - Juergen Teller

Celebrating the centennial of Saul Leiter’s birth, the official retrospective of a revolutionary figure in twentieth-century photography.

Saul Leiter photographed and painted nearly every day for over sixty years, amassing an enormous archive, most of which remained unseen during his lifetime. Finding inspiration within a few blocks of his apartment in lower Manhattan, he was a master at discovering beauty in the most ordinary places. Celebrated today for his evocative colour photographs of New York in the 1950s and 1960s, which were unknown in their day, Leiter also found success as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar. All the while he was shooting black-and-white street scenes on his daily walks, and nudes and intimate portraits back home, while continuing his painting explorations with abstract watercolours, whimsical sketchbooks and painted photographs.

Created in collaboration with the Saul Leiter Foundation, this definitive monograph brings together these diverse yet interconnected bodies of work – including much that was previously unpublished – to reveal the complete artist for the first time.

About the Authors:

Saul Leiter was born in 1923 in Pittsburgh. He pioneered a painterly approach to colour photography in the 1940s and produced covers for fashion magazines such as Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar before largely withdrawing from public attention in the 1980s. The publication in 2006 of his first collection, Early Color, inspired an avid ‘rediscovery’ that has since led to worldwide exhibitions and the release of a documentary, In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter (2013). He died in New York in 2013.
Margit Erb is the founder and director of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving Leiter’s art and legacy.

The first sightings of newly discovered work from Saul Leiter’s abundant archive of colour slides

Now widely acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923–2013) remained relatively unsung until he was rediscovered by curators and critics in his early 80s, and his work has been drastically re-evaluated over the last two decades. Leiter’s images evoked the flow and rhythm of life on the mid-century streets of New York in luminous colour at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. His complex and impressionistic photographs are as much about evoking an atmosphere as nailing the decisive moment.

On his death in 2013, he left behind a collection of more than 40,000 colour slides, only a fraction of which had seen the light of day. This book showcases seventy-six newly unearthed images from that extraordinary photographic treasure trove, published here for the first time. Meticulously curated by Margit Erb and Michael Parillo of the Saul Leiter Foundation and supported by texts that explain how Leiter built the slide archive and how it is now being explored, catalogued and restored, this monograph will be a must-have for photography fans worldwide.

Henri Cartier-Bresson, Clément Chéroux

The coronation of George VI on 12 May 1937 was one of the biggest media events of the interwar period. While other photographers focused on the new King, his family and the ceremonial splendour of the day, Henri Cartier-Bresson turned his lens on the crowds that gathered in the streets of London to watch the pageantry.

In a witty reversal of the expected order of proceedings, he shows us ordinary people of all ages and walks of life, some climbing on monuments or each other's shoulders, others straining to get a better view with cardboard periscopes and mirrors on sticks. A few even slump on the ground, the festivities having proved too much. Presented alongside contemporary news clippings from around the world, these remarkable images reflect Cartier-Bresson's unmistakeable photographic eye and capture the British public at a unique historical moment.

About the Authors:

Henri Cartier-Bresson, born in 1908, began his career by studying painting before discovering photography in the early 1930s. In 1947 he founded the legendary cooperative agency Magnum Photos together with Robert Capa, David Seymour, William Vandivert and George Rodger. Cartier-Bresson left Magnum Photos in 1974 to devote himself to drawing and painting until his death in 2004. He is still considered one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century.

Clément Chéroux is director of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris. He has also held senior curatorial positions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The Beauty of Machines

With the technological and digital revolution, an entire universe of machines and computers has developed alongside the human world. These machines tell the story of what it is to be human: our needs and desires, our hopes and follies, our visions for the future. Alastair Philip Wiper’s photographic eye sweeps across Adidas shoe factories, colossal shipyards, or laboratories such as the Swiss research center CERN, showing us spaces of incomprehensible complexity. Observers can experience through this a kind of visuality that no longer has a consistent point of view, but a diversity that overwhelms the process of seeing. These photos not only possess a unique beauty of their own, as well as a fascinating aesthetic, but also stimulate thought and the search for one’s own position in the world.

About the Autor:

The British photographer Alastair Philip Wiper (Hamburg, 1980) became known for his work for the magazines Wired, The Guardian, Scientific American, Wallpaper, and Vice. His series about Silicon Valley (Silicon Nights) and his book The Art of Impossible about Bang & Olufsen have been greatly admired. Wiper lives in Copenhagen.

André Kertész is one of the figures who shaped modern photography. From the First World War onwards, his independent spirit led him to practise an art based on spontaneity and sincerity, seeking out the chance moments that ‘capture the true nature of things.’ Tender, nostalgic, modest, he forged a new path for photography, a kind of poetic realism that was neither forced nor showy. ‘I never document,’ he said, ‘I give my own interpretation.’

PHOTOFILE brings together the best work of the world’s greatest photographers, in an attractive format and at an easily affordable price. Handsome and collectable, the books are produced to the highest standards. Each volume contains some sixty full-page reproductions printed in superb duotone, together with a critical introduction and a full bibliography. The series has been awarded the first annual prize for distinguished photographic books by the International Center of Photography, New York.

Anja Niemi

The first retrospective monograph of one of the most fascinating talents in contemporary photography

Anja Niemi: In Character is the first career retrospective/monograph by the Norwegian photographer. Niemi’s work has emerged as a distinctive force within the venerable tradition of conceptual self-portraiture. She works alone and always in character. With her purposeful and elaborate stagings, Niemi is photographer, director and female lead, inserting herself into the lives of her fictional characters. Extending the genre of self-portraiture, Niemi is at heart a story-teller, a creator of fictions. Her images offer a multilayered, cinematic exploration of identity, gender roles and, crucially, our relationship with ourselves.

Anja Niemi is at the ‘breakout moment’ in her career, having had exhibitions in Amsterdam, London, New York, Oslo, Paris, San Francisco and Shanghai, and with her first museum retrospective show opening in February at Fotografiska in Stockholm. This book features over 170 photographs organized into the six series – Do Not Disturb, Starlets, Darlene & Me, Short Stories, The Woman Who Never Existed, and her latest series She Could Have Been A Cowboy – that have marked her career to date, supported by an essay and interview by Max Houghton, co-author of Firecrackers: Female Photographers Now. It is the perfect introduction for those encountering Niemi’s work for the first time, and a comprehensive retrospective of her career to date for her long-time followers.

About the Author:

Anja Niemi (b. 1976, Oslo) studied at the London College of Printing and Parsons School of Design in Paris and New York, and has exhibited in galleries worldwide. Three previous monographs of her work have been published, and her work appeared in Firecrackers: Female Photographers Now, also published by Thames & Hudson.

Ansel Adams
ID: 7997
Видавництво: Little, Brown Book Group

For many people images of the major national parks in the US exist in the mind's eye as Ansel Adams photographs.

A dedicated environmentalist as well as a renowned artist, he was one of the 20th century's most ardent champions of the parks system. Through his photos, essays and letter-writing campaigns, he helped create new parks and better protect existing ones. He worked in more than 40 national parks over 50 years - including Shenandoah, the Great Smoky Mountains and Acadia in the East - and his work in the California High Sierra resulted in some of the most indelible images of the natural world ever made with a camera. 50 of the images in this volume have not been published in any authorized Ansel Adams book previously; many more are rarely seen. A substantial essay by photographic critic and historian Richard B. Woodward lays out Adams' significant role in tracing the history of American conservation.

The selection of photographs was made by Andrea G. Stillman, Adams' assistant late in life and a foremost expert on his work. A group of thumbnail images with brief narratives, enlivened by quotations from Adams, appears at the back of the book.

Ansel Adams

Видавництво: Little, Brown Book Group

Beautifully reproduced and cleanly presented, the four hundred images in this volume represent the finest work of a pre-eminent landscape photographer. The photographs are arranged chronologically into five major periods in order to convey Adams's maturation as an artist - from his first photographs in 1916 to his last great photograph in 1968.

ANSEL ADAMS' 400 PHOTOGRAPHS is intended as a must-have gift and reference book for anyone who appreciates photography and the allure of the natural world. Few artists or photographers of any era can claim to have produced four hundred images of lasting beauty and significance. It is a testament to Ansel's vision and his prodigious output that a book of this scale can be justified, and it is a point of pride for Little, Brown to publish a comprehensive overview of the work of Ansel Adams in a single well-packaged volume.

About the Photographer:

Born on 16th August 1928, Ara Guler is a Turkish photojournalist, also known as Istanbul's Eye. His father owned a pharmacy, but had many friends that belonged to the world of art. Later, he leaned towards journalism and abandoned cinema. In 1950 he joined Yeni Istanbul, a Turkish newspaper, as a photojournalist. During the same time, he studied economics from University of Istanbul. Then he started working for Hurriyet.

Nobuyoshi Araki
ID: 12347
Видавництво: Steidl Verlag

A young woman with her legs spread wide; buttoned-up dressed workers on a city street. Contrasting photos like these of intensely private scenes, and snapshots of nameless passers-by are Nobuyoshi Araki’s early commentary on the heterogeneity of Japanese society, calling the moral responsibility of its members into question. This book combines Araki’s Tokyo series from his early works with a selection of his recent Polaroid collages and newly developed slide shows — all of them exploring the contradictions between anonymity and intimacy, the public and private sphere, reality and dream.

The legendary Araki is one of the most influential and widely discussed artists today, one who deals with nakedness, sexuality and the body in a radical and realistic way. Through an extreme emotional and physical closeness with his subjects, he becomes not only part of their lives but plays a central role in his own photos, thus transcending voyeurism. Together with Nan Goldin, Larry Clark and Boris Mikhailov, Araki is considered one of the pioneers of intimate subjective photography.

Art is all about doing what you shouldn’t. Nobuyoshi Araki

About the Author:

Born in Tokyo in 1940, Nobuyoshi Araki worked in advertising after completing his studies in photography and film at Chiba University in Tokyo; he devoted himself exclusively to photography from the mid-1960s. Araki’s oeuvre spans erotic portraits of women, artificial still lifes, images of plants, documentary-style depictions of everyday life, architectural photography, as well as diaristic photos of himself and his deceased wife Yoko. He has published around 400 books, shown in many international exhibitions, and his work is part of important collections worldwide. Araki lives and works in Tokyo.

Ari Marcopoulos, Foreword by Robert Slifkin, Text by Catherine Taft and Neville Wakefield
ID: 16008
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The definitive monograph of Ari Marcopoulos, the renowned photographer whose explicit and startling visual intimacy bridges art and street photography. For nearly four decades, Ari Marcopoulos has broken conventions with his candid and raw style. His photographs documenting subcultures such as skateboarding, snowboarding, and hip-hop; his tendencies to photograph stark landscapes, portraits of artists, and celebrities; and his extremely quiet and intimate photos of his family and friends have all been hugely influential in helping to establish the visual rawness of youth culture, as well as the ephemeral aesthetic of contemporary photography. Ari Marcopoulos: Not Yet is an unprecedented journey through the artist’s celebrated career, from skateboarding and snowboarding to rural landscapes and cityscapes. This volume includes both iconic and never-before-published photographs from the 1980s to now. Each chapter is edited by a different celebrated artist or family member — all close to Marcopoulos — and it is through these personal reflections on the artist’s work that this monograph takes on a deeper level of intimacy, drawing a more complete portrait of his oeuvre.

About the Author:

Ari Marcopoulos is an artist whose photographs and films have been exhibited, collected, and published around the world. Robert Slifkin is an associate professor of fine arts at the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Catherine Taft is a writer and curator based in Los Angelese. Neville Wakefield is a curator and writer on contemporary art and culture.
