Among the pictorial genres, still life, which depicts in detail the common objects of domestic life (fruit, vegetables, food, but also animals and tableware), holds an important place. It is an art form which gives us valuable insights into changes of mentality and philosophy. Each still life is emblematic of a specific time and place and of a certain metaphysical perspective. This condensed, well-priced overview of the genre features some sixty works from antiquity to the present and analyzes the history and significance of each.

The still life, the most primordial of painting subjects, had its peak between the late Middle Ages and the 17th century. In this book, Norbert Schneider explores the still life's insights into changes of mentality and philosophy as well as its role in the history of scientific discoveries and the gradual replacement of the medieval concept of the world.

Setting up a still life may take no more than gathering a few objects on a table, but infusing its depiction with depth, texture, feeling, and even beauty takes great skill. The origins of the still life can be traced back at least to classical antiquity (such wall paintings have been found in the ruins of Pompeii) but the genre's name wasn't coined until the 17th century in Holland, a few centuries after it was re-popularized during the Renaissance. This book explores a stimulating selection of still lifes from the 15th century to the modern day, revealing the historical importance and creative possibilities of this genre.

More than 125 gorgeous photographs showcase the beauty of award-winning stonemason Lew French's work in eight different homes, illustrating how rounded fieldstone, gray slate, rough granite, and even curvy driftwood can be incorporated into stunning pieces of functional art. French provides charming narration for each project: how an idea came to be; how a stone-splitting technique is executed; even how one of his most difficult pieces, a three-year-long project, was saved from ruin the day it was completed. With its contemporary hearths of rustic slate, sculptured walls of both great granite slabs as well as stacked and rounded fieldstones, Stone By Design: The Artistry of Lew French will inspire design lovers to incorporate this material in home interiors and exteriors, whether as an artful writer's studio, a playful fireplace, or a carefully crafted garden pathway. More than just a stunning tribute to the work of Lew French and his unique vision and craft, this book celebrates both the function and form of stone. It's the perfect inspiration for anyone interested in adding the beauty of stone to their home or landscape.

Graffiti has evolved into a rich and democratic form of visual expression that is now most often labelled ‘street art’. As it matures, street art has moved indoors; galleries now exhibit and sell limited-edition prints by established artists with recognizable self-created brands, including Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Shepard Fairey, Eine and Miss Tic.

This beautiful book is the first to look specifically at street art prints – now highly prized in their own right. It introduces the artists, symbols and subject matter that dominate the genre and places their prints in the wider context of urban art. The book jacket unfolds into a poster.

A Stencil is a templated used to draw or paint identical letters, symbols, shapes, or patterns every time it is used. Stencils havs become popular for graffiti since stencil art using spray-paint can be produced quickly and easily. These qualities are important for graffiti artists where stenciling is illegal or quasi-legal, depending on the city and stenciling surface. The extensive lettering possible with stencils makes it especially attractive to political artists

Sticker art is more than just simply a sticker, it is everything you can stick on a surface on the street, becoming immediately a little piece of art. New York City, London and Barcelona are some of the cities featured on this imaginative colour book.

Stunning and vibrant artwork can be found on buildings, sidewalks, street signs, and other surfaces in cities from New York to London to Barcelona. Street Art presents a comprehensive overview of this movement that began in the late 1960s with anonymous spray-can art in New York and Philadelphia and that has since grown into a cross-cultural phenomenon over the last four decades.

Street Art begins with an explanation of the difference between street art and graffiti, along with new trends and styles. Each medium is then explored in a different chapter - stickers and posters, stencils, textured surfaces, traffic signs, buildings and furniture. Also included are chapters on street art characters and panoramic murals. Woven throughout are biographies of the artists - all internationally known - and an interview with each one.

Street Art is an exciting look at an art movement that has been around for decades but that is just now beginning to emerge in the mainstream.

Much of today’s most exuberant, most creative and most telling imagery is all around us, in the street. Cuba has a unique place in these international street galleries. Its colonial past and its Revolution, invoked everywhere in utopian images, have created something vibrantly distinct.

Beyond the ideology, this is the venue to enjoy the nostalgia of the chrome trim and high tail fins of 1950s automobiles, the locale for Cohiba cigars, pre-Revolution enamel Coke signs, the ever-popular Bacardi rum and all the excitement of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Barry Dawson’s brilliant photographic eye captures it all in an all-colour ideas book for students and practitioners of design, an evocative medley of impressions for visitors – and would-be visitors – to Cuba, and an inspirational journey for the visually curious.
