The experimental art of Olafur Eliasson

Studio Olafur Eliasson is an experimental laboratory located in Berlin. Led by renowned Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, it functions as an interdisciplinary space, generating fresh dialogues between art and its surroundings. This rich sourcebook enables the reader to delve into the corners and crevices of the Studio’s diverse projects. The key concepts behind the works are presented alphabetically, and unfold in the course of short conversations with the artist. The majority of Eliasson’s thought-provoking installations, photographs, sculptures, and architectural projects to date is included, with additional material focusing on the research processes at Studio Olafur Eliasson. The introduction is provided by the noted art historian Philip Ursprung, who also participates in the enlightening conversations.

Olafur Eliasson, born 1967 in Copenhagen, of Icelandic parentage, studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, from 1989 to 1995. Early in his career he moved to Germany, establishing Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin. Internationally acclaimed, Eliasson lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin

The Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection was one of the first in the world to bring together works of US and Soviet art in the time period when they originated. Occasioned by the 30th anniversary of the opening of the iron curtain, in this book, which accompanies the eponymous exhibition at the Gropius Bau, works contained in the Ludwig Collection from both sides of the East-West conflict are compared for the first time. In this dialogue, it becomes apparent how Cold War era artists responded to the political and aesthetic issues of their age and negotiated concepts of individual and social freedom. The volume features some 150 works, including ones by Andy Warhol, Ilya Kabakov, Jackson Pollock, Erik Bulatov, Lee Lozano, Natalya Nesterova, and Helen Frankenthaler.

The CD is a complete summary of all the works presented in the concerts, as well as biographical outline of the composers and interpreters of which accompanied the distinct journies

The work of Catalan artist Eulàlia Valldosera links to the human body and the representation through conceptual pieces. Her installations formed by objects, cinematic devices, and projected images in the space surround the spectator and produce nearly a magical effect. The retrospective, which the Reina Sofia Museum dedicates to the artist, allows to look over and to get to know her initial works, barely shown previously, that include drawings, photography or single-channel videos. Besides, Valldosera will present the work Alma Mater, a monumental multichannel installation created especially for this show. The exhibition was followed by two publications. One of them The Navel of the World covers a wide selection of images, texts and documentation of the works produced in 1990 and 1991 by Eulalia Valldosera under the common rubric of The Navel of the World , and its structure is defined by the artist's notebooks with her memos, and completed with her conversation with Chantal Maillard.

Curating has been a key concept both in and outside the art world in the past few years, with the remit of what a curator does having changed and expanded with each new exhibition or biennale.

Natasha Hoare is Curator at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. She holds an MA in Curating from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London; and a BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University. Prior to joining Witte de With she worked as Assistant Curator for the Visual Arts Section of the Marrakech Biennale 5 (2014) and for On Geometry and Speculation, a parallel project for the Marrakech Biennale 4 (2012). She has previously worked as Studio Manager for artist Mark Wallinger and Special Projects Manager for artist Shezad Dawood. Natasha regularly contributes to Ibraaz, ExtraExtra, Elephant Magazine, The Gourmand, and Saatchi publications.
