Takashi Murakami’s irreverent, pop culture-infused art has made him one of the most recognized Japanese artists today. His bright, contemporary boisterousness, however, belies his deep scholarship and engagement with traditional Japanese art.

Takashi Murakami: Lineage of Eccentrics presents key examples of Murakami’s work alongside a rich selection of Japanese masterpieces spanning several centuries and arranged here according to concepts laid out by his mentor and foil, leading Japanese art historian Nobuo Tsuji. Beautifully illustrated with Tsuji’s selections from the pre-eminent Japanese art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as some of Murakami’s best-known works of painting and sculpture, the combination of old and new in this groundbreaking volume enriches our understanding of each, and ultimately shows us how contemporary art can be seen as part of a continuum or lineage.

About the Author:

Takashi Murakami has become recognized as one of the most prominent contemporary artists of his time. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at museums and art institutions throughout the world. Recent shows include the travelling retrospective ©MURAKAMI and the Château de Versailles’s solo exhibition of his works on the palace grounds. Massimiliano Gioni is the associate director and director of exhibitions for the New Museum in New York and the curator of the exhibition Murakami – Ego for the Qatar Museums Authority.

Today, the most clever brand communication is self-promulgating.

Anyone currently working in brand communication is facing fundamental yet compelling challenges. In an age in which we are flooded with information, consumers are becoming more critical and discerning. They are deploying ever finer filters so that only the most relevant pieces of information ever reach them. Because of this development, traditional brand and advertising messages are far less likely to be seen.

Taken by Surprise is a collection of communication measures that are sophisticated and relevant enough to overcome these hurdles. They include limited special edition products and signature collaborations between brands, artists, and designers such as those between Julian Schnabel and Maybach, Issey Miyake and Dyson, Sagmeister and Levi’s, Olafur Eliasson and BMW, Jonathan Meese and Staehlemuehle, Terry Richardson and Colette as well as other innovative work by the likes of Damien Hirst, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, David Lynch, Geoff McFetridge, and Pharrell Williams.

An accessible A-Z guide to the art of the 20th-century

The 20th Century Art Book was hailed upon its release as an exciting celebration of the myriad forms assumed by art over the last century.

Complementing the phenomenally successful Art Book, and most recently The American Art Book, it presents a new and original way of bringing art alive. Covering the truly international nature of the modern art scene, it encompasses established, iconic works of art and the classics of the future. 500 artists are showcased in alphabetical order, each represented by a full-page colour plate of a definitive work and an incisive text which sheds light on both image and creator.

This book is above all easy to use: cross-references help the reader make connections between artists; there is a jargon-free glossary of artistic terms and movements; and an international directory of museums and galleries lists the works on public view.
Ideal for those approaching the subject for the first time, it is a fun and unintimidating look at the ever-expanding boundaries of art.

This book presents work by a group of the world’s most esteemed young contemporary artists and designers in a medium they’ve previously not explored–retro 3D.

Since he was a kid, artist, designer, and vinyl toy impresario Tristan Eaton has been obsessed with the nostalgic look of 3D imagery. In The 3D Art Book, he parlays this fascination into a carefully curated selection of over 100 works by established and up-and-coming contemporary artists, expertly rendered as 3D images which can be viewed with red and blue glasses (included in the book). Many of the pieces, by artists respected within the designer toy, street art, Pop Surrealist, graffiti, graphic design, and streetwear communities, were created specifically for this project.

The included works range from otherworldly paintings by Eric White, Ron English, and James Jean, to graffiti pieces by Dr. Revolt, Claw Money, and HAZE, intricate designs by Tokidoki, 10Deep, and Mishka NYC, cartoonish characters by Jon Burgerman, Miss Van, and Gary Baseman, as well as pieces by heavyweights D*Face, Todd Schorr, and Shepard Fairey. Each image comes jumping to life when viewed with 3D glasses. Eaton’s introduction documents his personal history as an appreciator and creator of 3D art, while an essay by cultural critic Carlo McCormick focuses on stereoscopic 3D’s rise to pop prominence in 1950s America.

Eulalia Valldosera

The work of Catalan artist Eulàlia Valldosera links to the human body and the representation through conceptual pieces. Her installations formed by objects, cinematic devices, and projected images in the space surround the spectator and produce nearly a magical effect. The retrospective, which the Reina Sofia Museum dedicates to the artist, allows to look over and to get to know her initial works, barely shown previously, that include drawings, photography or single-channel videos. Besides, Valldosera will present the work Alma Mater, a monumental multichannel installation created especially for this show. The exhibition was followed by two publications. One of them The Navel of the World covers a wide selection of images, texts and documentation of the works produced in 1990 and 1991 by Eulalia Valldosera under the common rubric of The Navel of the World , and its structure is defined by the artist's notebooks with her memos, and completed with her conversation with Chantal Maillard.

How many times have you heard the term 'curate' in the past few years? But what exactly does it mean?

Curating has been a key concept both in and outside the art world in the past few years, with the remit of what a curator does having changed and expanded with each new exhibition or biennale.
With an emphasis on the ‘now’ and the most recent exhibitions, this book examines the variety and richness of curating practices today, from public commissions by Art Angel to experimental projects such as the 'Ghetto Biennale' in Haiti or the Rhizome digital archive.

Each highly illustrated case study is structured around an interview with the curator responsible for the show. The text both tells the story of the show’s making and fills in background information about the curator’s work.

About the Authors:

Natasha Hoare is Curator at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. She holds an MA in Curating from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London; and a BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University. Prior to joining Witte de With she worked as Assistant Curator for the Visual Arts Section of the Marrakech Biennale 5 (2014) and for On Geometry and Speculation, a parallel project for the Marrakech Biennale 4 (2012). She has previously worked as Studio Manager for artist Mark Wallinger and Special Projects Manager for artist Shezad Dawood. Steampunk — a grafting of Victorian aesthetic and punk rock attitude onto various forms of science-fiction culture — is a phenomenon that has come to influence film, literature, art, music, fashion, and more.

The Steampunk Bible is the first compendium about the movement, tracing its roots in the works of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells through its most recent expression in movies such as Sherlock Holmes. Its adherents celebrate the inventor as an artist and hero, re-envisioning and crafting retro technologies including antiquated airships and robots. A burgeoning DIY community has brought a distinctive Victorian-fantasy style to their crafts and art. Steampunk evokes a sense of adventure and discovery, and embraces extinct technologies as a way of talking about the future.

This ultimate manual will appeal to aficionados and novices alike as author Jeff VanderMeer takes the reader on a wild ride through the clockwork corridors of Steampunk history.

Artists breaking new ground, employing masterly techniques and creating work influenced by visual subcultures.

A new breed of contemporary artists is celebrating newfound international recognition for their style and approach to creating art that is sprouting from and largely influenced by visual subcultures. These young artists, many of whom are associated with the widespread movements of Lowbrow Art and Neo-Surrealism, share similarities with the popular art movements of the 1960s and 70s as well as urban art.

The term Lowbrow may sound self-deprecating; rather it represents a distinctive artistic composition and technical approach in which art is produced. The Upset documents this movement and the artists associated with it. Feeding off an array of popular subcultures, they often draw influences from anime, comic books, graffiti and street art as well as character design.

The often figurative and narrative artworks featured here employ classical techniques with great skills to create sculpture, illustration, design and painting with the use of spray cans, sharpies and elaborate colour palettes on canvas. With the evolution of new media, artists are also blending these elements with various disciplines in contemporary visual art.

Many of the artists in The Upset enjoy international fame and are represented in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. The book also introduces a selection of promising talent who are breaking new ground, making it the perfect source book for those interested in fine art and discovering young artists.

Featured artists: Maike Abetz / Oliver Drescher, Alexone, Grant Barnhart, Gary Baseman, Tilo Baumgartel, Tim Biskup, Mark Bradford, Daniele Buetti, Cailan Burns, Ray Caesar, Miguel Calderon, John Casey, Paul Chatem, The Clayton Brothers, Joe Coleman, John Currin, Brendan Danielsson, Stephan Doitschinoff, Blaise Drummond, Dzine, Ala Ebtekar, Martin Eder, David Ellis, Ron English, Faile, Christian Farner, Rosemarie Fiore, FriendsWithYou, Camille Rose Garcia, Os Gemeos, Michael Genovese, Charles Glaubitz, Benjamin Güdel, Robert Hardgrave, Maya Hayuk, Ryan Heshka, Femke Hiemstra, Cody Hudson, Gisela Insuaste, Rich Jacobs, John John Jesse, Colin Johnson, Mel Kadel, David Kassan, Aya Kato, David Kinsey, Henning Kles, Kozyndan, Susanne Kuehn, Mia Mäkila, Mateo, Elizabeth McGrath, Casey McKee, Jason McLean, Philip Metten, Moki, Brendan Monroe, Heiko Müller, Muntean/Rosenblum, Yoshimoto Nara, Aaron Nather, Anne Faith Nicholls, Jose Parla, Nigel Peake, Raymond Pettibon, Danielle de Picciotto, Anthony Pontius, Pooch, Johan Potma, Jeremy Pruitt, Leopold Rabus, Scott Radke, Rex Ray, Scott Rench, Daniel Richter, Rostarr, Christoph Ruckhaberle, Mark Ryden, Christoph Schmidberger, David Schnell, Sebastian Schrader, Michael Sieben, Michael Slack, Jeff Soto, Fred Stonehouse, David Stoupakis, Swoon, Johannes Tiepelmann, Chris Uphues, Miss Van, Vania | Ivan Zouravliov, Matthias Weischer, Martin Wittfooth and Chet Zar.

Not only Mao before the masses, but also dozens of housewives armed with brooms, scores of Gillette razors and hundreds of Mon Chéri chocolates. In a play on perceptions in which nothing (or everything) is what it seems, in the midst of a profusion of food tins, cleaning products, cars, reinforced concrete buildings and motorways that populate the works of Thomas Bayrle (Berlin, 1937). Acclaimed as one of the voices of Pop Art in Germany, the truth is that Bayrle's ironic, repetitive, almost grotesque visual displays ultimately subvert the paradigms of the Pop movement. His works are practically psychedelic maps constructed from mosaics of images and hallucinatory to a point far beyond pop's hypnotic and surface effects. This book, based on the first retrospective devoted to this artist's artist, reproduces part of his work - wallpapers, photographic and digital collages, graphic works, cardboard sculptures, watercolours and drawings - and takes the visitor on an artistic journey that spans more than forty years.

Since the early 1980s Thomas Ruff has explored the photographic medium, the way it is used and the world of contemporary digital visual culture.

This volume contains and comments a seminal selection of 200 photographic works by this important german artist: including images of domestic interiors, portraits, houses and architecture, starry skies, nocturnal urban scenes and nudes, it focuses on the blurring of the distinction between photography and painting today and predominantly on ruff’s more abstract recent works, particularly his relationship with digital imagery and its production, which he began to investigate in the 1990s.

This book, realized on the occasion of a major retrospective that takes place at Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, features new essays by the curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, as well as by Daniel Birnbaum and Giorgio Verzotti.
the volume also includes a detailed chronology of the artist’s exhibitions, a bio-bibliographical appendix, a rich anthology including texts on the artist by Wim Beeren, Per Bj. Boym, Boris Von Brauchitsch, Ian Brunskill, Régis Durand, Marc Freidus, Reinhold Happel, Jacques Herzog, Julian Heynen, Michel Houellebecq, Jörg Johnen, Eva Karcher, Valeria Liebermann, Annelie Pohlen, David Rimanelli, Michael Stoeber, and Matthias Winzen, as well as conversations and interviews by Daniel Birnbaum, Max Dax, Stephan Dillemuth, Isabelle Graw and Friederike Wappler.
