About the Author:

Philosopher Roberto Peregalli and architect Laura Sartori Rimini founded Studio Peregalli, an interiors and architecture firm, in Milan in the early 1990s. Rupert Thomas was the editor-in-chief of The World of Interiors for twenty-two years.

The ‘new urban municipality of Berlin’, also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city’s area increased from 66 to 878 square kilometres, its population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin.

The two volumes of Unfinished Metropolis are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin. The first volume offers an insight into an array of different topics, such as Berlin’s role as the capital of Germany, its relationship with Brandenburg, and the historical, economic, and social conditions that have driven the growth of the urban area over the centuries. The second volume delves deeper into the designs for the future. It comprehensively documents the International Urban Planning Competition for Berlin-Brandenburg 2070, held by the states’ association of architects and engineers. Urban pilot projects from the informal city

Urban-Think Tank (U-TT), an interdisciplinary design practice emerging from the turbulent political environment of Chávez-era Caracas, has pursued projects in Latin America, Europe, and Africa for almost twenty years. Their diverse work positioned the firm at the forefront of a social turn in architecture in the late 1990s, with concrete urban interventions encouraging social cohesion in the megacities of the Global South and Europe’s evolving metropoles. U-TT has also produced numerous media projects that harness film, theater, exhibitions, and print to create new discursive spaces and question how our cities are shaped, and for whom. Most notable is its work on the squatted skyscraper for which the firm shared the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012. This book looks forward as well as back, imagining new spaces for a hyper-urbanized world and gaining insight from informal settlements, spatial play, and artistic interventions in public space.

This monograph details thirty-four major architectural works from Valode & Pistre, including commercial, retail, industrial, and cultural projects. Founded in 1980 by its current directors Denis Valode and Jean Pistre, Valode & Pistre Architects is a highly sought-after architecture and design firm based in Paris. Their predominantly large-scale projects are distinguished by their high degree of diversity — from the Contemporary Art Museum of Bordeaux to the L’Oréal factory and more recently the T1 Tower La Défense in Paris. Their innovative designs for the Beaugrenelle Center on the Front of the Seine won the Global Award for Excellence in 2015 for its approach to urban development.

The book features works such as the Renault Technocentre near Paris, Las Mercedes business park in Madrid, and a group of hotel towers in Beijing. The book also looks at future projects that were recently awarded to Valode & Pistre — a new Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center and three stations of the Grand Paris Express transit line.
