About the Authors:

Vo Trong Nghia (b. 1976) studied architecture at the Nagoya Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo, before founding Vo Trong Nghia Architects in 2006 in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. His designs are at the foregront of ‘green’ architecture and sustainable practices, and have received numerous accolades, including multiple World Architecture Community Awards and a Wallpaper* Design Award in 2021. Philip Jodidio is the author of numerous books, including monographs on Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel and Zaha Hadid as well as The New Pavilions, Casa Moderna: Latin American Living and Casa Tropical: Houses by Jacobsen Arquitetura.

Edited and authored by the renowned architecture expert Philip Jodidio, this book is dedicated to a new, eye-catching building by Swiss architect Jean-Pierre Dürig located in Lausanne, also known as the “Olympic Capital.” As the structure’s name suggests, Vortex is an 88-foot-high tower in the shape of a cylinder, rising around a single, continuous 1.7-mile-long ramp. Its spiraling movement creates an emblematic shape reminiscent of Olympic rings — a fitting tribute for a building that housed the 1,700 talented young athletes who competed in the Winter Youth Olympic Games in January 2020.

Over 130 photographs, sketches, plans, and models illuminate this enormous undertaking, while Jodidio’s informative text offers detailed insight into the phases of design and construction. Imagery of circular references from art, architecture, and nature highlight the inspiration behind the building’s extraordinary shape. Printed in Italy using the finest European papers, this volume is a beautiful ode to Vortex and Lausanne’s forward-looking spirit.

About the Author:

Art historian William Hennessey has taught at Vassar College, the University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Michigan and directed the art museums at each of those institutions. From 1997 to 2014 he was director of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. Hennessey is the author of catalogues and articles on a variety of art and design topics, including nineteenth-century architecture and twentieth-century industrial design.

Michelle Nussbaumer’s design career began in Rome, where expats fell in love with the villa she had decorated and sought her out as a guide to Italian treasures. After moving to Los Angeles, Nussbaumer opened her design business and chic antique shop in La Brea. A decade later, she returned to Dallas and opened her celebrated shop Ceylon et Cie. Her work has been featured in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Veranda, Marie Claire, House & Garden, and the New York Times. Hutton Wilkinson is an interior decorator, master jeweler, and design authority.

An in-depth look at the dramatic architecture and design for the largest rail transportation hub in the world, serving a high-speed rail network that connects Hong Kong to major cities in China, with its pioneering, ecofriendly, and socially sound design.

The is the first book to document the highly innovative Terminal in Hong Kong, completed in 2018, with a rare glimpse at all stages of plans, design, and construction. Located centrally in Hong Kong, this is the largest below ground station in the world. The high-speed rail terminus station will connect Hong Kong to Beijing with the largest rail network in history, expected to strengthen the city's strategic position as the southern gateway of China.

West Kowloon Station enjoys a spectacular location with a panoramic view of the Hong Kong skyline, but when Bromberg's team entered the competition to design it, they encountered a problem the station is mostly 100 feet belowground. His solution was to ensure the station was civic-minded and to create a large volume capped by a shell-like dome that rises from the earth, capturing daylight and sending it deep underground. Even as they stand on the subterranean concourse, passengers can catch a glimpse of Victoria Peak and the city's tallest buildings. In order to keep the space open and airy, Bromberg minimized the number of columns needed to support the vast atrium. His team devised a system that branches out, giving the organic appearance that complements the sweep of the station roof.

This book contains never-before-seen sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of the building as well as an interview with the architect.
