A treasure trove of Bunny Mellon's garden design philosophy and advice from her personal archive.
Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon is for anyone who has enjoyed time spent in a garden, from aspiring garden makers to those who manage large estates. This collection is comprised of extracts from Bunny's own writings and garden notes, as well as photographs and drawings from her archive.
Chapters are organized by Atmosphere (sky, horizon, shadows), Climate, Light, Space, Shape, Maintenance, and more--readers will feel as if Bunny Mellon has come alongside as a gardening guide and friend.
Bunny Mellon was of the affluent class and mingled along with her husband, Paul Mellon, in the circles of the East Coast gentry of the Kennedy and Reagan eras. But Mrs. Mellon, as she was respectfully called by those professional gardeners who worked with her most, wasn't snooty about social position or afraid to get her hands dirty in the rich soil of her family's Virginia farm. Beyond this, Bunny Mellon was known nationally and internationally as a style icon of her time, enjoying friendships with Givenchy, the Kennedys, and the like. Her personal passion was for design, and that was exhibited in her fashion and her garden.
A late acquaintance, Linda Holden learned that Bunny wanted to write a gardening book but never found the time. Searching the family's archive after Mrs. Mellon's death, the editors -- whom all shared personal relationships with Bunny -- discovered a trove of photographs, illustrations, and writings and have now turned it into the how-to gardening book Bunny had hoped to write.
About the Authors:
Linda Jane Holden is the author of The Gardens of Bunny Mellon, published October 2018.
Thomas Lloyd, grandson of Bunny Mellon, is president of the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation which was established by Bunny Mellon to honor her father.
Vertical gardening is the hottest new garden design concept.
An increasing number of consumers garden in limited spaces, and are searching for help in maximizing gardening space, whether that's an urban terrace, a narrow side yard, or a small intimate area in a landscape. Vertical gardening techniques offer solutions for a wide range of garden challenges, including growing edibles, personalizing a garden with unique focal points and decorative touches or simply hiding unsightly landscape elements.
Landscape designers, Susan Lee Morrison and Rebecca Sweet have filled this book with easy, affordable, inspirational vertical options that will help consumers create beautiful gardens that take advantage of vertical opportunities.
Filled with design tips, plant ideas and over 200 photos, Garden Up! offers inspiration and how-to information for enhancing any outdoor space with vertical elements. Authors Morrison and Sweet cover everything from living wall projects simple enough for a home gardener to tackle to creative solutions for blank walls and narrow beds.
In chapters like 'Arbors and Trellises' and 'Garden Secrets', the book offers a wealth of design advice and problem-solving solutions for traditional gardeners. Small-space gardeners, DIYers and those looking to incorporate the latest vertical techniques into their gardens will appreciate sections that examine 'skinny space' planting beds, urban gardens, edibles and living walls. In keeping with their problem-solving approach to gardening and design, Morrison and Sweet have arranged their plant picks chapter by solution rather than plant type. Each chapter features a design spotlight that examines a specific garden and breaks down the elements that went into its creation.
The range of gardens included in the book support the authors' belief that vertical gardening is more than a temporary trend - it's here to stay.

This book is a survey of 12 breathtakingly beautiful gardens by award-winning photographer Andre Baranowski, whose eye for beauty will embolden readers the world over to embrace their inner instincts and create their own garden wild.
The new movement in contemporary gardening is about going back to the wilderness, creatively landscaping with native plants to enrich their environments and seamlessly merge with their natural surroundings. Politely rejecting traditional manicured, hedged and pruned gardening aesthetics to invite an alternative kind of beauty: wildly bursting with indigenous plants, old-growth trees, vibrant patches of wildflowers and perennials, succulents, un-pruned bushes and ornamental grasses. New York City's Highline is a famous example and this landscaping approach is becoming increasingly popular for private homeowners.
This book surveys twelve such breathtaking gardens captured by award-winning photographer Andre Baranowski.
The featured gardens range from small private residencies to large properties, by renowned landscapers such as Oehme van Sweden, Fernando Caruncho, Jorge Sanchez, and Piet Oudolf. The texts detail each project's approach and the hurdles presented by its landscape, providing the reader with an array of instructional ideas from an insider's mindset. Guaranteed to be a boundless source of inspiration and treasured by lovers of gardens worldwide.
