Marking the 125th anniversary of William Morris’s death, this is the most wide-ranging, comprehensive – and beautiful – illustrated study of William Morris ever published

William Morris’s interests were wide-ranging: he was a poet, writer, political and social activist, conservationist and businessman, as well as a brilliant and original designer and manufacturer. This book explores the balance between Morris’s various spheres of activity and influence, places his art in the context of its time and explores his ongoing and far-reaching legacy.

A pioneer of the Arts & Crafts Movement, William Morris (1834–1896) is one of the most influential designers of all time. Morris turned the tide of Victorian England against an increasingly industrialized manufacturing process towards a rediscovered respect for the skill of the maker. Morris’s whole approach still resonates today, and his designs are popular and much admired.

Published to mark the 125th anniversary of Morris’s death, this book includes contributions from a wide range of Morris experts, with chapters on painting, church decoration and stained glass, interior decoration, furniture, tiles and tableware, wallpaper, textiles, calligraphy and publishing. Additional materials include a contextualized chronology of Morris’s life and a list of public collections around the world where examples of Morris’s work may be seen today. This study is a comprehensive, fully illustrated exploration of a great thinker and artist, and essential reading for anyone interested in the history of design.

About the Artist:

William Morris - textile designer, writer and social pioneer, William Morris and his work have long been associated with the V&A. In 1865, his company was commissioned to design the West Dining Room at the museum, which features early examples of a number of the organic patterns that would make his name. Born in Walthamstow in 1836, Morris was captivated by nature from childhood, spending much of his time exploring Epping Forest and the surrounding countryside. These themes informed much of his textile design, and his mastery of pattern ensured an enduring appeal.

William Morris Textiles was the first comprehensive survey of the many hundreds of original, colourful textiles produced by William Morris and the two commercial companies he founded and managed. To this day it remains the authority in the field, and this revised edition has been completely rewritten and expanded with beautiful new photography. Linda Parry provides new insight into the embroideries, printed and woven textiles, carpets and tapestries produced by Morris & Co., giving in-depth information about their design and manufacture. The varied, often highly specialized processes involved are discussed in detail, as are Morris's working methods.

Pamela Todd

Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

In the history of the decorative arts, there has never been another designer who has achieved such lasting impact. While lamenting the excesses of mass-production, he set up the firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Company. Soon it was producing a range of goods, from hand-woven tapestries, carpets and printed textiles to stained glass, metalwork and furniture. What the company offered was quite simply a way of life.

Now available in paperback, Pamela Todd’s book celebrates William Morris’s genius, presenting a thorough overview of his life and career, while setting out his guiding principles so that a modern audience can recreate the Arts & Crafts style in their own homes.

A series of case studies explores six contemporary houses – from a modern London townhouse to a traditional Arts & Crafts home in Massachusetts – that have followed and adapted Morris’s dicta, brilliantly demonstrating how the style can be applied to our environment today.

The book concludes with a comprehensive style-sourcing section, as well as a gazetteer of places to visit for inspiration.

Revised edition of the bestselling backlist title. William Morris was an outstanding character of many talents, being an architect, writer, social campaigner, artist and, with his Kelmscott Press, an important figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. Many of us probably know him best, however, from his superb furnishings and textile designs, intricately weaving together natural motifs in a highly stylized two-dimensional fashion influenced by medieval conventions.

Following on from the bestselling success of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Mucha, of the same series, this delightful new book offers a survey of his life and work alongside some of his finest decorative work. A richly beautiful book.

A beautiful book devoted to designs by William Morris that incorporate flowers, a central motif in Morris's oeuvre

A passionate advocate of craftsmanship over mass-production, William Morris (1834– 1896) designed a huge variety of objects, but it is his highly original carpet, fabric and wallpaper patterns that have continued to capture the imagination and exert their influence on the decorative arts. Around 600 such designs are attributed to Morris, of which the vast majority are based on natural forms, including trees, plants and flowers.

This beautifully designed, accessibly priced gift book offers a wealth of designs by Morris in which flowers are the principal motif, bringing together not only completed patterns but also working drawings in pen and watercolour, and examples of his pearwood, floral-pattern printing blocks. It also explores examples of the sources that inspired Morris’s flower-based designs: his own gardens at the Red House in Kent, Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire and elsewhere; 16th- and 17th-century herbals; illuminated medieval manuscripts; late medieval and Renaissance tapestries; and a range of decorated objects, particularly from the Islamic world, that Morris studied at the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A). Authored by Rowan Bain, curator at the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow, north London, and lavishly illustrated with almost 100 colour illustrations, this exquisite book will both inform and delight.

About the Author:

Rowan Bain is curator at the William Morris Gallery and was formerly assistant curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is the author of several books and a contributor to May Morris: Arts & Crafts Designer.
