Philippe Starck is one of the world's most prolific and famous designers. Well known for his luxurious hotels and restaurants, he is equally celebrated for his inspirational reworkings of everyday household items.

Whether it be his iconic lemon squeezer, dubbed the 'Juicy Salif', or his colourful stylized toothbrushes, Starck's works are some of the earliest examples of 'democratic design'. This idea, that exceptional products should not be exclusive and elite, but be accessible and affordable, would eventually revolutionise modern design.

Starck has worked privately for French president Francois Mitterand, decorating a suite in the Palais d'Élysée in Paris in 1982. He has designed products for a number of internationally renowned organisations including Microsoft, Lacie, Eurostar, Alessi and Fossil.

These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarising the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

Christina Morozzi is the editor of Design magazine and works as a curator of exhibitions in Italy and abroad. She is also a visiting professor at Domus Academy of Milan and University of Art and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland.

The mechanics of lightness

The wide-ranging career of the Italian virtuoso

"The array of buildings by Renzo Piano is staggering in scope and comprehensive in the diversity of scale, material, and form. He is truly an architect whose sensibilities represent the widest range of this and earlier centuries." Such was the description of Renzo Piano given by the Pritzker Prize jury citation as they bestowed the prestigious award on him in 1998. Whereas some architects have a signature style, what sets Piano apart is that he seeks simply to apply a coherent set of ideas to new projects in extraordinarily different ways. "One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again," Piano says. "Like a movie director doing a love story, a Western, or a murder mystery, a new world confronts an architect with each project." This explains why it takes more than a superficial glance to recognize Piano’s fingerprints on such varied projects as the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Kansai Airport in Osaka, Japan, the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Nouméa, New Caledonia, the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland, The New York Times Building in New York, and his most recent structure, the London Bridge Tower, which will be upon completion the tallest building in Western Europe.

While some architects have a signature style, Renzo Piano seeks to apply coherent ideas to extraordinarily different projects. His buildings impress as much for their individual impact as for their diversity of scale, material, and form. Piano rose to international prominence with his codesign of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that "turned the architecture world upside down." Since then, he has continued to craft many high-profile cultural spaces, including the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Morgan Library Renovation and Expansion in New York; and, most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan's Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries.

In New York and London, the Renzo touch has also transformed the skyline with the towers of the New York Times Building and the Shard, the tallest building in the European Union. This essential introduction travels from Osaka, Japan, to Bern, Switzerland, and through many cities, structures, and islands in between, to explore the staggering scope of the Renzo Piano repertoire.

From the "inside-out" Pompidou to the airy shells of the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia, this is a thrilling journey through the beauty of architecture, where, in Piano's own words, "each time, it is like life starting all over again."

About the series:

- information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions

Piano, Virtuoso. The Italian master’s complete oeuvre

Renzo Piano rose to international prominence with his co-design of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that “turned the architecture world upside down.” Since then, he has continued to craft such iconic cultural spaces as the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago and, most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries. In London, the Piano touch has also transformed the skyline with the Shard, the tallest building in the European Union.

At the age of 81, the Italian maestro retains all of his enthusiasm and kindness — and his recent roster is more impressive than ever. As he confided to the author, “I think at a certain age, one can discover that there is what the French call the ‘fil rouge,’ a kind of red thread that relates one building to another over time. In my case, I believe it is about lightness and the art of building.” From freshly built museums in Athens and Santander; ongoing works in Los Angeles, Moscow, Beirut, and Istanbul; to such humanitarian projects as the Emergency Children’s Surgery Center in Entebbe, Uganda, and the Children’s Hospice in Bologna, Italy, Piano’s career is a thrilling journey through the beauty and very essence of architecture.

This XXL-sized monograph, jam-packed with more than 200 new pages illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans, spans Piano’s entire career to date and the many existences of his singular aesthetic.

Also available as an Art Edition accompanied by a print of a sketch by Renzo Piano, signed by the artist and limited to 200 copies.

The artist:

Renzo Piano (born in 1937) studied at the University of Florence and at Milan’s Polytechnic Institute. A recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1989 and the 1998 Pritzker Prize, Piano’s most iconic projects include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Shard in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has his main offices in his native Genoa and in Paris.

The author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His TASCHEN books include the Architecture Now! series and monographs on Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Richard Meier, Zaha Hadid, and soon Norman Foster.

This series presents international architects and designer in monographies. Pierro Lissoni is one of Italy's most successful Designers, leading a company in Milan with over 50 Architects and Designers.  So far he is known more for his furniture design rather than his architecture. He is often thought of as a minimalist, but in reality, Piero Lissoni's aim is to create a complementary cohabitation of different styles. His highest goal is simplicity: as way of thinking, as an attitude, simplicity holds a great inner complexity. For Piero Lissoni it is always imperative to scale down and get to the bottom of things. Among his customers are renown companies such as Boffi and Matteograssi. The book introduces to a selection of his outstanding projects all around the world.

An exhaustive monograph on the eminent architect, emblematic of Milanese, and also Italian, 20th-century architectural and figurative culture.

Celebrated in the 1930s, controversial and forgotten during the postwar period, and finally rediscovered today, Piero Portaluppi was an undisputed protagonist of 20th-century Italian architecture. An eclectic protagonist who steered clear of specific styles and schools, a master of hydroelectric architecture, and a great town planner whose projects changed the face of Milan. Produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Piero Portaluppi, this new exhaustive monograph comprises a large photo album with new colour images of Portaluppi’s architectural projects and interiors, taken by the well-known photographer Ciro Frank Schiappa; three previously unpublished essays, illustrated with vintage photos by Antonio Paoletti; views and models of Portaluppi’s projects; items documenting his personal interests (cartoons, diagrams, sundials, postcards, newspaper cuttings). The volume also features an interview with Portaluppi’s nephew, architect Piero Castellini, by the famous film director Luca Guadagnino; an unpublished essay by architect Paolo Portoghesi; a biography of Piero Portaluppi by Jacopo Ghilardotti; a list of works and a bibliography compiled by Ferruccio Lupi, conservator at Fondazione Piero Portaluppi.
