Perfect English Cottage explores 18 beautiful and inspirational homes that celebrate the best of classic cottage style in the English countryside.

The classic English country cottage is both an icon and an archetype. Dozing beneath a heavy thatch and with roses around the door, it seems to epitomize all that is desirable about life in the countryside and to offer the perfect antidote to the stress of the urban grind. In Perfect English Cottage, Ros Byam Shaw takes a fresh look at the decorating and design solutions that make the classic English country cottage as attractive inside as out as well as practical and comfortable to live in.

The book is divides into five different chapters that address different facets of the look: Romance, Character, Holiday, Simplicity and Elegance. The featured homes are incredibly varied, from a humble farmworker's cottage with exposed beams to a pared-down Georgian gem, to a picture-perfect cottage with roses round the door - and plenty more adorning the interior.

At the end of each chapter there is an invaluable review picking up on ideas and inspiration from the featured homes. At the end of the book there is also a comprehensive directory of sources to help you achieve the English Cottage look in your own home - wherever you may live.

About the Author:

Ros Byam Shaw writes on design and interiors for House & Garden and the Telegraph, among others. She is the author of Perfect English, Interiors by Design, and Old House New Home (all Ryland Peters & Small). Perfect English was selected by the editor of House & Garden as one of the top ten interiors books available.

Continuing her exploration of English interiors, Ros Byam Shaw visits 14 distinctive townhouses full of charm, character and style.

In Perfect English Townhouse, Ros Byam Shaw examines the timeless English style of decoration in a variety of Georgian, Victorian and contemporary townhouses. Architecturally, these tall, narrow properties present challenges. How do you make the best of a basement kitchen with a low ceiling and limited light? Or allocate space when you live on five floors? And how do you maximize any precious outdoor space?

Perfect English Townhouse features case studies of such homes, not only in London but also in the provincial towns and cities of England. Some feel like little pockets of countryside surrounded by pavements, others have a more sophisticated, metropolitan allure; some are endearingly eccentric, others more classical. All the interiors featured are inspiring, and reflect the personalities of the people who inhabit them. These are the kinds of space that most of us are familiar with, and that many of us occupy. What is unusual is how cleverly and creatively these examples have been decorated and designed.

In Perfect French Country Ros Byam Shaw celebrates relaxed rural France at its finest, visiting timeless and beautiful French country homes that feature ancient beams and stone fireplaces, panelled rooms and attics under steeply-pitched pantiles.

In a busy modern world that seems increasingly overcrowded and monopolized by technology, the allure of the ‘good life’ is more potent than ever. As an antidote to texts and tweets, traffic jams and queues, additives and packaging, we seek out the simple and the wholesome, and long for the luxuries of space and fresh air. France can offer all these things, with its traditional farming methods, its authentic regional cuisine, and its low population density. Add to this the inimitable French sense of style and joie de vivre, and you have all the ingredients for an enviable way of life.

Perfect French Country revels in the timeless and authentic beauty of the French country home.

Larry Perkins describes the firm's philosophy: 'While we enjoy recognition, the applause we seek is the quiet trust and satisfaction of clients and public who know that their interests have been thoughtfully served.' From its early beginnings more than 65 years ago, Perkins & Will has evolved into a firm characterised by its ability to transform commonplace building programs into uncommon designs and to work with clients in very successful ways. Perkins & Will's portfolio of buildings is vast in quantity as well as scope, and includes schools, hospitals, colleges and university facilities, laboratories, museums and corporate headquarters. Success at Perkins+Will is measured by how imaginatively a client’s vision is translated into a finished product. The firm designs and strategizes with a philosophy that places people at the center of their work; collaboration is what propels their design process forward. This approach is a Perkins+Will legacy, dating back to one of the firm’s first and most prestigious projects, the 1930s Crow Island School, designed with the insight founder Larry Perkins gained from attending school with the children. This monograph explores the firm’s work through its rich history, examining a variety of completed and conceptually designed projects that promote the firm’s philosophy of ideas and buildings that honor the broader goals of society.

Persian art and architecture have a rich heritage that stretches far beyond the borders of modern-day Iran, from the Abbasid monuments of Baghdad to the splendid Timurid buildings of Samarqand and Bukhara.

In this glorious volume a wealth of photographs capture this profusion in rich detail, creating a vibrant guide that will captivate anyone keen to explore the cultural achievements of this
great civilization.

When the ancient land of Persia was conquered by the Arabs, its people embraced the coming of
Islam but strove also to retain their own language and culture, celebrating their history in works of literature such as the epic Shahnama. This merging of influences resulted in a distinctive artistic style that spread through the Middle East, reflected in monumental architecture and in art forms that range from expressive miniature paintings to sumptuous carpets and ceramics.

The book follows a historical path across the Iranian world and examines the artistic legacies of great rulers and their dynasties, from the rebirth of Persian art under the Seljuqs, to the magnificent structures built by Timur-i Lang in Samarqand, to the cultural flowering that occurred under the Safavid dynasty through the patronage of Shah Abbas and his descendants, and beyond.

Palaces, mosques, madrasas and mausoleums display a mesmerizing decorative complexity, with form and ornament combining to create an indivisible whole. Spectacular polychrome tiles, intricate brickwork, curling arabesque motifs and calligraphic inscriptions attain a transcendent beauty, designed to reflect both the temporal power of the rulers who commissioned these works and the heavenly glory of creation

Persian Rugs and Carpets: The Fabric of Life presents a pictorial journey around Persia, reflecting the weaving and pattern styles of the many regions and tribes - including Esfahan, Kashan, Nain, Qum, Kerman, Tabriz, Bakhtiari, Senneh, Malayer and Qashqa'i - showing the vast range of carpets woven in Persia from about 1850 to the third quarter of the 20th century. The introductory text to each section explains the particular aspects of that region's weaving style. In addition, each caption gives an in-depth account of the carpet, not only the date and region in which it was woven, but also the motifs and patterns, the technique used, even the weaver, and, in the case of pictorial carpets, the fascinating stories being depicted.

The introductory essay takes the reader through the history and geography of the Persian rug, including information on structure, weaving and knotting, the different output of the city and urban workshops compared to tribal and village weaving, flatweaves, and identification. It also features points of note for the collector, such as conservation and cleaning, as well as highlighting the difficulties in dating rugs, and the problems with fakes.

Lavishly illustrated in colour throughout, Persian Rugs and Carpets: The Fabric of Life shows these carpets at their very best, with incredible clarity of detail, bringing together in one place the diversity of weaving styles and the great variety of patterns, allowing the reader to compare carpets at a glance.

This exquisite book - an essential addition to the bookshelves of all carpet collectors and aficionados - is a testament to the rich and vibrant art form of Persian carpets.

Born in Iran to a family with a long history of dealing in Persian carpets, perhaps it was inevitable that Essie Sakhai should become a respected expert on Oriental and Persian carpets, gaining much of his great knowledge from his father Benayahoo Sakhai. Essie lives in North London, though he spends most of his time at ESSIE CARPETS on the corner of Albemarle Street and Piccadilly in London's Mayfair, carrying on the family tradition started in the 18th century.

Essie is a true enthusiast and hopes through his extensive lectures, interviews and writing (his previous books include The Story of Carpets, which has been translated into many languages, and The Buyers' Guide) to share his knowledge and passion for carpets with a wider audience.

Peter Gisolfi is an architect, landscape architect and educator whose substantial design practice extends over 20 years. Most of his work consists of carefully crafted buildings that relate to a larger setting. A variety of public and private projects completed throughout the United States are featured in this first monograph.

The projects in this book are organised thematically as landscapes and buildings, gardens and houses, campuses, townscapes, and transformations. The common threads in these projects are that indoor and outdoor spaces are created in harmony with each other, that buildings are placed to define outdoor spaces, and that natural context and man-made context strongly influence the design. From an understanding and response to these factors comes a timeless and permanent architecture.
