About the Author:

Avi Friedman is a professor of architecture at McGill University, Canada, an honorary professor at Lancaster University, UK, and president of Avi Friedman Consultants, Inc., a design firm with a focus on affordable and sustainable residential environments. He has written fourteen books and his design work and projects have been cited in magazines, newspapers and TV shows, including Good Morning America, Dream Builders and Stewart Brand’s How Buildings Learn. In 2000, Wallpaper* included him in their list of ten people ‘most likely to change the way we live’.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been forced to retreat into private shelters and to question the limits of residential typologies. The villa is an obvious example of such a shelter. Alexandra Black has written widely on cultural and material history. She is the author of Living in Cuba, The Japanese House, Dusk Till Dawn, and The Fashion Book, and has contributed to Elle, Vogue Living, and Gourmet Traveller.

Anyone concerned with the history, tradition, and culture of our built environment will sooner or later come across the term ‘Public Humanities’. At the interface between an academic discipline and the media-oriented culture industry, Public Humanities is established as a field of inquiry in the US and is increasingly becoming so in Europe too.

Whether this field of research remains a product of Western culture will only become apparent in the coming years. However, linking architectural debate with the humanities is an important concern of the papers collected here.

About the Author:

Philipp Meuser, born in Hilden / Germany (1969), architect and publisher. Studied architecture in Berlin and Zürich with a focus on history and theory. Construction and consulting projects in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Academic research on mass housing in the Soviet Union as well as publications on socialist architecture.

About the Author:

David M. Cobb is a member of NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) and PPA (Professional Photographers of America). He lives in the Pacific Northwest.

Kendall H. Brown is Professor of Asian Art History in the Art Department at California State University Long Beach. He also recently served as Curator of Collections, Exhibitions and Programs at Pacific Asia Museum. He received BA and MA degrees in history and art history from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in art history from Yale University. Dr. Brown publishes actively in several areas of Japanese art. He is a leading figure in the study of Japanese gardens in North America, having authored the book, Japanese-style Gardens of the Pacific West Coast.
