The redevelopment of historical centres became an important policy field in the era of European dictatorships following the First World War. At that time historical centres were regarded as shabby and as tarnishing the desired image of a magnificent new city, of a showcase of the dictatorship. This led to the widespread demolition of older buildings. Historical streets and squares disappeared and were replaced by new apartments and workplaces for the loyal middle classes, by car-friendly roads and ostentatious new buildings. Nevertheless, the redevelopment of historical centres did not exclusively mean the eradication of the ‘old town’. The aim of the dictatorship in many cases was also the preservation, and often the cultic display, of historical testimonials to past greatness.

The book presents examples of the redevelopment of historical centres in Mussolini’s Italy (Rome, Brescia, Bologna, Naples), in Stalin’s Soviet Union (Moscow), in Hitler’s Germany (Berlin), in Salazar’s Portugal (Lisbon, Évora, Óbidos) and in Franco’s Spain (Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Santillana del Mar). These are followed by a brief summary of the history of the redevelopment of historical centres in Europe. This volume represents the very first attempt to identify the commonalities and differences in the redevelopment of historical centres in dictatorships in Europe in the first half of the 20th century.

Russian-German architect Sergei Tchoban (born 1962) is well-known for his virtuoso skills as a draftsman; for over 30 years he has also been a passionate collector of architectural drawings.

This publication unites Tchoban's own drawings - which range from perspectival-illusionist representations of his hometown of St. Petersburg to travel impressions, fantasies and visionary architectural studies - with highlights from his collection of works by European architects and painters dating from the seventeenth century, including Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1656-1743), Filippo Juvara (1678-1736) and Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Focusing on motifs of ancient, classicist and Baroque architecture, these works establish a fruitful dialogue with Tchoban's correspondingly broad production.

Through these extraordinary examples of paper architecture - a fascinating but somewhat neglected critical genre - this book underscores the endless possibilities for expression in the medium and promises to delight any reader interested in architecture or the graphic arts.

As a full career monograph, the book will feature iconic Kligerman houses built over the past twenty years and current projects that demonstrate the evolution of his architectural thinking. This will be a “deep dive” into the design process, illustrated by sketches and renderings as well as finished photography.

An introduction by Architectural Digest design editor Mitchell Owens will provide an overview of the trajectory while Kligerman’s own essay will focus on his interest in developing a truly American style that reflects both the Puebloan style of the Southwest and the shingle style that has prevailed in along the East Coast since the late nineteenth century.

Kligerman designs only single-family houses, and his clients have beautiful sites in the Hamptons and throughout New England with a few on the West Coast and in Texas. He is deeply steeped in the history of European and American domestic architecture and wonders whether there is (or can be) an American house paradigm. He grew up in Connecticut and New Mexico so the two strands that he draws on most art the solid adobe forms of Puebloan style and the lighter, more open shingle style. He also considers West Coast architects like Bernard Maybeck and English arts and crafts designers like Vosey and Lutyens. Rather than looking at single, specifc precedents and adapting them for contemporary life, Kligerman tries to incorporate multiple strands to come up with something new – “to move the needle forward,” as he says.

About the Author:

Tom Kligerman was raised in Connecticut and New Mexico and spent years in France and England as a student. These experiences sparked his interest in therich history of domestic architecture, gardens, and landscapes. Before co-founding Ike Kligerman Barkley, he worked at Robert A.M. Stern Architects. He holds a BA from Columbia University and a Master of Architecture from Yale School of Architecture.
Kligerman is active in professional organizations, including the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art, the Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation, where he served as board chair for many years, and the Design Leadership Network.

 A dedicated student of the history of residential architecture internationally, Kligerman is a sought-after speaker and tour guide for the work of McKim, Mead & White, Bernard Maybeck, and other iconic figures. He also shares his passion on Instagram where he posts images of houses and intricate details he admires for 31k followers.

The unique achievement of this work is to have brought together research, theory, and action for the first time to deal with the issue of Romanian shrinking cities. The format of the publication is ambivalent, being at the same time an edited volume and an authored book. An extraordinary variety of well-designed middle-class family dwellings in Germany

Germany is a nation of detached houses. About two-thirds of its residential building stock consists of single-family homes, and with 80,000 to 90,000 new buildings per year, more and more people are fulfilling the dream of their own four walls.
