For over 100 years, "Country Life" has regularly covered British gardens and gardening - but it has also featured fine gardens made abroad, particularly those in the Mediterranean region. Kathryn Bradley-Hole has visited gardens in the South of France and all over mainland Italy, but also in North Africa, Sicily, Greece and Spain, and unearthed the absorbing stories behind their creation and development. More than 35 glorious locations are featured here, illustrated with stunning archive photographs from the Country Life Picture Library. They include private residences in Greece, Spain and Italy, and the iconic gardens of the French Riviera - including Villa Maryland on Cap Ferrat, La Leopolda at Beaulieu, the novelist Edith Wharton's own villa garden at Hyeres and Auguste Renoir's home at Cagnes-sur-mer. Kishani Perera is founder of the L.A.-based design company Kishani Perera Inc. and has worked with many celebrity clients. Her designs have appeared in InStyle, People, and Better Homes & Gardens, among many other publications. She was named a Designer to Watch by Town & Country. In 2011 she opened her first store, Rummage, in Los Angeles. Molly Sims and Gary Oldman are actors and Perera’s longtime clients.

This chronological account takes you through the key events in the lives of Virginia and Leonard Woolf through a history of their home, Monk’s House in Sussex, where Virginia wrote most of her major novels.  The story of this magical garden includes selected quotations from the writings of the Woolfs which reveal how important a role the garden played in their lives, as a source of both pleasure and inspiration. Bought by them in 1919 as a country retreat, Monk's House was somewhere they came to read, write and work in the garden.  

Virginia wrote first in a converted tool shed, and later in her purpose-built wooden writing lodge tucked into a corner of the orchard. Enriched with rare archive images and embroidered garden plans, the book takes the reader on a journey through the various garden ‘rooms’, (including the Italian Garden, the Fishpond Garden, the Millstone Terrace and the Walled Garden), each presented in the context of the lives of the Woolfs, with fascinating glimpses into their daily routines at Rodmell. 

About the Author

Caroline Zoob is  an embroiderer, designer of china and textiles, and someone who set a trend for making beautiful things using antique textiles. She undertakes design commissions for several large companies and runs a website  www.caroline-zoob.co.uk selling her embroidery and a range of homewares. Her book Childhood Treasures was published in 2003. Caroline Zoob lives in East Sussex.
