An updated edition of this classic title on the origins of 20th-century ideas in architecture and the applied arts.

The turn of the nineteenth century saw an extraordinary flowering of invention in architecture and design, leading to the emergence of two contrasting styles: Art Nouveau and the International Style. Professor Nikolaus Pevsner brings clarity to this period of dynamic change by tracing the origins of twentieth-century ideas in architecture and the applied arts.

Featuring a new foreword by the distinguished architectural historian Kenneth Frampton, this classic title has now been updated with colour illustrations throughout.

About the Author:

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983) was Slade Professor of Fine Art, University of Cambridge, 1949-55, and Fellow of St John's College, 1950-55. He was the first Professor of the History of Art Department at Birkbeck College, University of London, retiring in 1969. He is probably best known for The Buildings of England, completed in more than fifty volumes shortly before his death, and for his Outline of European Architecture, which has remained a standard work for over forty years. Kenneth Frampton CBE served as Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York, from 1972 to 2019. In 2018 he was awarded the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. The Story of Trees takes the reader on a visual journey from some of the earliest known tree species on our planet to the latest fruit cultivars.

"Wonderful stories and in-depth information you will normally never find in books about trees." - Piet Oudolf, Landscape Designer and creator of the planting design for New York's High Line

"Entwining fascinating facts about 100 trees with inspiring stories of their importance to ancient civilizations, trade, religious and pagan beliefs, wellbeing and medicinal uses over the ages, this delightful and well-researched book provokes curiosity on every page." - Dr. Alexandra Wagstaffe, Eden Project Learning

The chosen trees have all had a profound effect on the planet and humankind. Starting with the Ginkgo Biloba, fossils of which date back 270 million years, we learn about how trees came to be integral to the development of our species, and how specific trees have become important religious, political, and cultural symbols.

With beautiful illustrations by Thibaud Herem and fascinating botanical facts and figures, this book will appeal to tree lovers from all over the world.

"Within these pages, we hope to inform and inspire those who already have a love of trees, as well as those who otherwise may have taken them for granted. The Story of Treesis our story, but also that of our ancestors. It is about our relationship with some of the world's most important trees, both on a local scale and globally. With so many trees to choose from, we have endeavored to feature those that have been, and in most cases continue to be, of cultural and practical value to humankind."

Winter gardens are well-established elements of the architectural design of residential spaces. With their glazed structure, they absorb light and heat, offer protection from all climatic conditions, while suggesting an immediate connection to the surrounding landscape.

Through more than 40 exemplary projects, this volume shows how the concept of glass building shells is successfully interpreted in contemporary architecture. In addition to winter gardens in the classical sense as modern expansions to the residential space, multifaceted solutions of glazed facades covering entire residential structures based on the latest technologies are presented. What is more, a close look on the trend of living in greenhouse-like structures provides innovative insights into the area of ecologic sustainability and potential self-sufficiency.

Thus, The Sunny Side of Life presents an inspiring and technically informative overview of the future-ready potential of using glass in architecture.

Jinny Blom
ID: 18548
Издательство: Frances Lincoln

‘The most romantic, creative person in garden design I know.’ Piet Oudolf

Prolific designer Jinny Blom embraces a wide variety of styles, from large garden spaces to formal walled gardensand contemporary installations. What defines her work is her skill with plants and her ability to create a garden that responds to the history of the site and the wider landscape. The gardens Jinny creates are as different as their owners and their locations.

In this book, Jinny shares her insight into the creative process she has developed while designing more than 250 gardens around the world. The Thoughtful Gardener contains modern takes on traditional forms, and is split into six sections: seeing, understanding, structuring, harmonising, rooting, and liberating.

All of Jinny's gardens share a commitment to beautiful craftsmanship and considered planting. Structure and detail are important, and receive close attention. The styles vary considerably – logical, calm, beautiful, romantic, naturalistic, formal, sometimes spare – but the principles remain firm. Jinny designs for the long term, with consideration for the environment; these gardens are built to last.

Reflecting Jinny‘s highly individual character, there is plenty of wit and quirkiness alongside the expert knowledge, and it will appeal to the widest audience of garden lovers. Thoughtful and beautiful, yet practical and informative, this book marries artistry with functionality.

About the Author:

Jinny Blom is a leading garden designer who began her London based landscape design practice in 2000. Jinny works on a wide range of projects and has designed hundreds of gardens all over the world. Her innovative and uniquely thoughtful work has been much lauded and featured in the press internationally.

She has designed four award-winning gardens for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and was awarded the coveted gold medal in 2007; along with silver-gilts in 2002 (for her ‘Healing Garden’ developed in collaboration with The Prince of Wales); in 2006 (for Laurent-Perrier); and in 2013 (for her creation commissioned by Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale).  The great-granddaughter of an Impressionist painter, Jinny had a Liberal Arts education in the UK. She trained and practised as a transpersonal psychologist and psychotherapist, working for many years in mental health. In 1996 she chose to devote herself to her lifelong interest in natural landscapes and gardens.  She has been a columnist for The Times, contributed regularly to radio and television worldwide, and in 2002 won BBC Radio Broadcaster of the Year for her Radio 4 Woman’s Hour features. Jinny has been nominated Woman of the Year an unprecedented three times - in 2002, 2007 and 2013 - for her services to society including her role as Artist in Residence at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.

It seems that almost everyone likes treehouses. Smiles of recognition turn into grins of enthusiasm as more people discover them and dream about making their own private retreats or family play spaces.  And it's nice to remind ourselves that treehouses are built into the oldest and most forgiving, living things on earth.  Also, history records treehouses as being built as deliberate follies, as challenges for arboreal designers, for merrymaking, and for keeping the spirit of fairy tales alive.  But treehouses can also be social places.  We will visit many that were built to entertain, to hang out with friends, or as guest houses.  Trees come in all types.

Master treehouse builders Peter and Judy Nelson, with David Larkin, have embarked on yet another treehouse-discovery expedition across America, this time adding the investigation of backyard playhouses to their agenda.  Now, in The Treehouse Book, they reveal their findings, illustrated and described in the most complete volume yet. From casual treeshacks made from discarded lumber to multitiered feats of fancy, they found shelters representing myriad builders -- interesting characters ranging from childhood fanatics grown up, to weekend carpenters, to those who want their grandkids to have the best clubhouse on the block.

Detailed how-to information, including plans and drawings, is woven with behind-the-scenes tales of each structure's occupants and stunning interior and exterior photographic exploration.

About the Authors:

Peter and Judy Nelson are builders of custom houses. They are the authors of the bestselling Home Tree Home and Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb.

David Larkin is a renowned editor and book designer.  His many bestselling books include Frank Lloyd Wright: The Masterworks, American Masterworks, Barn and Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb.

The Venetian Facade is about the facade. It explores the art and typology of the Venetian facade, not only as a high point of architectural literacy and achievement, but as a potentially useful contemporary stimulant.

There are no books that focus on the unique artistic characteristics of the Venetian facade and its potential relevance to contemporary architectural and urban issues, as this book intends.

This book is about architecture. It is not about history, although a bit of history is necessary to set the context. It is not about theory, although, again, a bit is necessary to connect the facade with urbanism.

It is also not about structure and technology. And, most definitely, it is not about the plan. All of these topics are well-covered elsewhere. This book is about the facade. It explores the art and typology of the Venetian facade, not only as a high point of architectural literacy and achievement, but as a potentially useful contemporary stimulant.

About the Author:

Michael Dennis is the principal of Michael Dennis & Associates in Boston, and Professor of Architecture Emeritus at MIT. 1986 Thomas Jefferson Professor of Architecture, University of Virginia; 1988 Eero Saarinen Professor of Architecture, Yale University; 2006 Charles Moore Professor of Architecture, University of Michigan.

_A formal study of the Venetian facade as a unique facade typology and as a resource for the design of modern facades
_The Venetian facade is a unique contribution to urban design
_As cities become increasingly important ecologically, socially, and economically, the design of urban facades will again become increasingly important

For the Love of Trees. The illustrated encyclopedia of wood types, now in a gold edition

A painstaking facsimile reproducing all specimen pages from the original volumes of Romeyn Beck Hough’s American Woods, an indispensable reference work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood. In this luxurious gold edition, each specimen is broken down in three cross-section cuts, revealing its unique characteristics, grain, colours, and texture.

Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains a stunning and unparalleled achievement, American Woods—originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock — is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood.

The Woodbook reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes; for this purpose, TASCHEN obtained an extremely rare original set of volumes in very good condition, with minimal damage to the wood cuts.

Arranged in alphabetical order, each tree is broken down into three different cross-section cuts of wood (radial, horizontal, and tangential), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colours and textures to be found among the many different wood types.

Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts explaining each tree’s geographical origins and physical characteristics.

The author

Klaus Ulrich Leistikow (1929-2002) studied natural science and philosophy at the universities of Cologne, Tübingen and Glasgow, and then taught biology at the university of Frankfurt.
