Simon Jacobsen
ID: 15345
Издательство: Rizzoli

Readers will respond to the warm and sophisticated work of Hugh and Simon Jacobsen, whose style of architecture and interiors might best be described as American modern vernacular — the place where traditional comfort and modern design meet.

Hugh Newell Jacobsen, the legendary architect and late co-founder with his son, Simon, of Jacobsen Architecture, once said “the best house is polite to her neighbors and never shouts.” This statement is a key to the philosophy of the firm, whose houses are suffused with a kind of quiet sophistication that mingle elegant, subtle modernism, with respect for local vernacular traditions. Low-key on the outside, on the inside these houses offer dancing symphonies in white. Unmarked by moldings, walls and ceilings express simple volumetric forms composed of solid planes and voids, while, upon floors of burnished wood or travertine, furniture, much of it designed by the firm, allows for serene repose and practical, unfussy use. Featured here are exemplars of the firm, from Harbor Hill — a cluster of 12 small structures, appearing at first as a group of smallish shingled Nantucket cottages, that reveals itself as a single serene residence overlooking Nantucket Harbor — to Windsor, a Florida Colonial abstraction in Vero Beach. Featuring inviting interiors, exteriors, and gardens, the book is an expression of eloquent design.

About the Authors:

Simon Jacobsen is a founding partner of Jacobsen Architecture. The recipient of many prestigious awards in architecture and design, he is an inductee of Architectural Digest’s AD100.

Paul Goldberger is contributing editor at Vanity Fair, former architecture critic for The New Yorker, and holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism in 1984 for his work with the New York Times.

Robert Shaw
ID: 16329
Издательство: Rizzoli

American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds, published to coincide with an exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum, reveals the beauty, historical significance, and technical virtuosity of American vanes fashioned between the late seventeenth and early twentieth centuries.

This American art form has long been an enduring part of the country's skylines. Early church steeples were graced with weathercocks, following a European tradition that dates to the MiddleAges. America's first documented vane maker, metalsmith Shem Drowne of Boston, crafted a number of surviving vanes, including the iconic golden grasshopper that has topped the city's Faneuil Hall since 1742. Farmers, blacksmiths, and other craftsmen proudly fashioned roosters, cows, horses, and other forms for country barns, and as the tradition and public demand expanded over the course of the nineteenth century, so did the diversity of forms, which grew to fill the mail order catalogs of commercial manufacturers in Boston, New York, and other cities.

Today, weathervanes hold a well-established place in the canon of American folk art and American Weathervanes celebrates this artistry in the most up-to-date and authoritative work on the subject. Lavishly illustrated with masterworks from prominent private and public collections, this is a book to be treasured by anyone who collects or simply admires American vernacular art and sculpture.

About the Author:

Robert Shaw is a critically acclaimed author, curator, and art historian who has written and lectured extensively on many aspects of American folk art. He has curated exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Natural History, the Fenimore Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Shelburne Museum, where he served as curator from 1981 to 1994.

Author Ben Pentreath, Foreword by The Earl of Moray
ID: 18039
Издательство: Rizzoli

Pentreath is renowned as one of the foremost designers of new traditional buildings and country houses in the world. In celebration of his London-based firm’s twentieth anniversary, Pentreath presents his authentically, yet playfully, classical approach.

This is the first of Pentreath’s books to present his own output in its entirety — from his personal residences in Dorset, London, and Scotland that brought him international fame to many old and new houses that he has designed and some of the larger, town-scaled projects that make his practice unique in the world of traditional design. Although the results range from his colorful and romantic versions of the English country cottage to traditional splendor, there are underlying ideas that inform the breadth of his output — a sense of scale, proportion, craft, detail, sustainability, and appropriateness — that have a universal relevance today.

Pentreath has authored as well as taken all photographs in this book, which looks at some thirty case studies, large and small, including many previously unpublished works. The designs encompass an understanding of materials, texture, classical and vernacular detail, color, richness, and simplicity by turn — as exemplified in both sumptuous and honest interiors, grand country houses, and pragmatically organized town plans. While being steeped in a learned classicism, Pentreath’s work is celebrated by young and old around the world, as exemplified by his coverage in major media outlets.

About the Authors

Ben Pentreath is a London-based architectural and interior designer, educator, and author. He received the 2023 Richard H. Driehaus Prize for excellence in the field of classical architecture. The Earl of Moray is the founder and chairman of Tornagrain, a new town in the Scottish Highlands. Pentreath has overseen the master plan and architectural design of Tornagrain.

András Szántó, Neil Holt
ID: 16629
Издательство: Hatje Cantz

Following on the widely read The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues, which explored how museums are changing through conversations with today’s generation of museum directors, New York-based author and cultural strategy advisor András Szántó’s new compilation turns its attention to architects. The conclusion of The Future of the Museum was that the “software” of art museums has evolved. Museum leaders are “working to make institutions more open, inclusive, experiential, culturally polyphonic, technologically savvy, attuned to the needs of their communities, and engaged in the defining issues of our time.” It follows that the “hardware” of the art museum must also change. Conversations with a carefully selected group of architects survey current thinking in the field, engaging not only architects who have built some of the world’s most iconic institutions, but also members of an emerging global generation that is destined to leave its mark on the museum of the future.

About the Author:

András Szántó (*1964, Budapest) advises museums, cultural institutions, and leading brands on cultural strategy. An author and editor, his writings have appeared in the New York Times, Artforum, the Art Newspaper, and many other publications. He has overseen the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University and the Global Museum Leaders Colloquium at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Szántó, who lives in Brooklyn, has been conducting conversations with art-world leaders since the early 1990s, including as a frequent moderator of the Art Basel Conversations series.

As residing in cities is becoming increasingly popular among all social strata, multi-party residential buildings are gaining in prominence. While this building type focuses first of all on the design and conception of residential space, its height and façade design significantly influence the cityscape. Creating layered living spaces is therefore one of the most important and diverse tasks of contemporary architecture.

This volume presents a spectrum of apartment buildings with innovative interpretations of traditional layout types, and loft-style room divisions, up to individual solutions that vary from one floor to the next. The range of presented projects extends from small dwellings with three residential units up to apartment complexes with several hundred parties, from inventive low-cost one-room apartments to giant luxurious residences with more than ten rooms. In this way the selection shows the multifaceted possibilities of how contemporary apartment buildings can accommodate very different lifestyles on all levels.

The physical model is an important communication tool for architects. Although the proliferation of CAD programs has enabled the creation of increasingly complex computer models and virtual environments, there is also a growing need to address the three-dimensional qualities of architecture that may be lost when using such media.

This book focuses on the inspiring possibilities for modelling the built environment with all the different media and techniques available. In describing the use of different models in different contexts, the book provides a practical guide to how and why models are used, and what they are used for.

This second edition includes more detailed step-by-step exercises, expanded discussion of materials and techniques, updated coverage of digital techniques and new case studies.

Daniel Chavkin, Jeffrey Head, and Jo Lauria
ID: 18388
Издательство: Monacelli Press

The first book to document the history of the groundbreaking company Architectural Pottery, tracing its critical influence on midcentury design and its enduring appeal today

Architectural Pottery’s strikingly minimalist designs heralded new domestic housewares that could uniquely accent the modern home - inside and out. Formally expressive yet accessible, their refreshingly unembellished, elegant pots and planters were enthusiastically received by the public upon Architectural Pottery’s launch in 1950, soon ubiquitous in spaces representing the epitome of modern living.

Highly coveted and prized in design circles, they were seen in houses by Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and the historic Case Study Houses, and featured in the first of MoMA’s legendary Good Design exhibitions alongside now-iconic designs by Ray and Charles Eames, Alexander Girard, and George Nelson. Over three decades, Architectural Pottery also developed innovations in stoneware production, expanded into fiberglass furniture, and included famed furniture designer Paul McCobb and sculptor David Cressey on its roster of designers.

A midcentury modern design enthusiast’s dream, Architectural Pottery: Ceramics for a Modern Landscapeis the first full history of this celebrated and influential brand. Richly illustrated with contemporary photography and extensive visual archival material—including the records of the founders Rita and Max Lawrence, and the personal archives of designers, art directors, and photographers associated with the company - it both tells a compelling story and is a valuable resource for collectors and interior designers.

The publication of this new book will coincide with a major exhibition at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, California.

About the Authors:

Daniel Chavkin is a photographer, collector, and researcher of all things modernist, and the author of Unseen Midcentury Desert Modern.

Jeffrey Head is a writer specializing in architecture and design and is author of several books.

Jo Lauria is a Los Angeles–based curator, writer, and educator, as well as coauthor of Master of the Midcentury: The Architecture of William F. Cody, also published by Monacelli.

The book presents outstanding hand drawings of German architects from various areas of architecture and design. The focus of the presentation is on the individual manuscripts of the architects and designers.

For some time now, many architects and designers are returning to manually drawn depictions of their designs – despite the fact that the latest computer-aided visualization techniques allow the creation of almost perfect illusions of planned buildings. However, they often lack in conveying life and atmosphere to the building resulting in a feeling of coldness and distance from the observer. Beyond the pure conveying of information through a mechanical drawing, the various techniques of manual drawing can convey individual sentiments and impressions. The result is a larger degree of authenticity coupled with an emphasis of the human dimension of architecture.

Gino Finizio, Alfonso Gambardella
ID: 3279
Издательство: Skira

Finizio’s theme is one we can see on the streets: having changed the 19th-century city into a “metropolis” of suburbs and highways, the car as an object is, in turn, changing in relation to the modern city. A leading Italian design professional, Finizio has gathered an international symposium of architects to explore how urban planning, architecture, and design ideas can create a new design philosophy for the automobile as a sort of domestic moving space that interacts with the new urban environment.

This richly illustrated book focuses on the relationship between the static city and “mobile architecture” of the car through the works of some of the most important contemporary international architects such as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhass, Jean Nouvel, Massimiliano Fuksas, and Alessandro Mendini. This is an urgent, exciting design mission that finally deals with how thinking about the urban car must coevolve in profound new ways.

Research is the driving force behind all innovation. Yet, for a long time, the research building, the nucleus of social change, languished as a purely functional building, ignored by architectural discourse. However, today there is consensus that structures for research and knowledge transfer can do and must do more than just provide workplaces and experimental areas. They are actually spaces of communication and inspiration, a reflection of our times.

In Architecture for Science, Christine Nickl-Weller and Hans Nickl share their wealth of experience in planning research and science buildings. They initiate a discourse on social significance, work-environment demands, and future challenges. Buildings dedicated to science are regarded within the context of urban structures, as highly specialized building styles, in their dimension as working and living environments, as well as regarding innovation in research and construction. An interdisciplinary approach is a key factor of this discussion, and thus this volume includes articles not only by architects, urban developers, and specialist planners but also by experts from a wide range of research areas.
