The collected early works of Sir David Adjaye, winner of the 2021 RIBA royal gold medal

David Adjaye, the son of a Tanzanian diplomat, spent his childhood moving between international cities before settling in London, where he was educated. Fresh out of the Royal Academy of Art, his early commissions reflected an influential generation of artists at the turn of the millennium with whom he shared a range of sensibilities. His artistic sensitivity, deft use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in a number of iconic projects.

With the hindsight of almost twenty years of practice and a raft of high-profile projects around the world – perhaps best symbolized by his National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. – the significance of Adjaye’s earlier projects is clear. Never shying away from a challenge, Adjaye used his first projects as testbeds for what would become his unique, acclaimed and highly sought-after brand of ‘critical regionalism’.

This monograph presents the first projects of Adjaye’s corpus, many little documented. From London’s West End to Brooklyn, clever urban interventions and pavilions to private houses for artists and public buildings for the many. These early projects, brought together and presented with new analyses and recently uncovered archival material, testify to the originality of an architect at the height of his talents who is changing the face of our built world.

The second volume in Thames & Hudson’s monographic series on global architect Sir David Adjaye, winner of the 2021 RIBA royal gold medal

Following on from Adjaye – Works: Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, 1995–2007, published by Thames & Hudson in 2020, this book covers the impressive portfolio of work created by the architect between 2007 and 2015. During the years covered in this book, David Adjaye became interested in developing an architecture that was more expansive, taking him outside Europe to work on major projects such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo. Designing buildings around the globe, including two projects connected with the post-Katrina reconstruction programme in New Orleans, Adjaye carefully tailored his approach to each place, sensitive to the important role architecture plays in affirming a sense of community and identity.

A landmark volume on one of the world’s major art forms, and an important influence on contemporary fashion3

The African continent is home to numerous outstanding textile traditions, many dating to antiquity and all playing a multifaceted role in their respective societies: these eye-catching fabrics proclaim wealth and status, convey symbolic meanings, and of course serve a practical function in garments both ordinary and exceptional. This magnificent book conveys the amazing diversity of African textiles, from the geometric-patterned kente cloths of Ghana, to the multicolor raffia skirts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, to the beaded barkcloths once reserved for Ugandan royalty.

The authors, all leading experts in the field, examine each region of sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar in turn, elucidating the aesthetic qualities, cultural significance, and production methods of the most important textile traditions. Their authoritative text is illustrated with over 300 superlative textiles from public and private collections, many reproduced as full-page plates that allow the reader to appreciate each individual fiber.

This impressive clothbound volume will be a key reference for students and scholars, an essential sourcebook for designers, and a delight for all art lovers.

Alan I W Frank, Kenneth Frampton, Barry Bergdoll, Charles A. Birnbaum
ID: 16393
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book to feature this modernist masterpiece, one of Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer's most important residential commissions.

Offering a rare opportunity to explore the largest and most luxurious house designed by Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, and Marcel Breuer, leading architect and furniture designer of the twentieth century, this beautifully designed volume celebrates the Alan I W Frank House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Built in 1939-40, the house embodies the Bauhaus "total work of art" philosophy, with Gropius and Breuer having designed every aspect of the building and its site. Illustrations including new and archival images and the architects' plans and sketches highlight an exquisite balance of proportions and colors. Accompanying essays place this house firmly within the American modernist canon just as the Bauhaus celebrates its one-hundredth anniversary in 2019.

About the Authors:

Alan I W Frank, son of the original owners, is president of the Alan I W Frank House Foundation, whose mission is to restore and preserve the Frank House. Kenneth Frampton is one of the world's leading architectural historians of modernist architecture. Barry Bergdoll, former curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art, is a professor of modern architectural history at Columbia University. Charles A. Birnbaum is president and CEO of the Cultural Landscape Foundation.

ID: 18037
Издательство: Rizzoli

A mythical place, the Amalfi Coast is home to dream villas within a unique landscape. Some of them have opened their doors for the first time, providing a unique opportunity to enter these exclusive homes.

The Amalfi Coast has always been a sought after destination among artists and the international jet set thanks to its spectacular topography, which combines a rugged coast and cliff-side villages overlooking the sea with the climate and the light of the Mediterranean, and the characteristic traditions and craftsmanship of the Campania region.

The visitors to the Coast include major names that helped make it famous, such as Gore Vidal, Rudolph Nureyev, Greta Garbo, John Steinbeck, Gianni Agnelli, Jackie Kennedy and Lee Radziwill, Franco Zeffirelli, Maria Callas, Princess Margaret, and Hillary Clinton.

This book gathers together beautiful houses from the Sorrento peninsula and the stretch of coast that extends from Positano to Vietri sul Mare, villas from different eras with different styles, some of which were decorated by famous designers and artists.

Each villa surprises the reader with its uniqueness: historic homes that have been transformed over the years and more contemporary villas, some with lush gardens, all equally fascinating thanks to their topographical position, architectural quality, furnishings and interior decorations, which include the truly unique ceramic floors of Vietri.

All of them encapsulate curious stories related to the people who have inhabited and transformed them, tales traced by journalist Ana Cardinale with an abundance of detail.

The photographs were taken specifically for the book by renowned French photographer Matthieu Salvaing. They include the exteriors and spectacular landscape views, the interiors and furnishings, and numerous decorative details of the ceramic features.

The first volume in more than 20 years tells a new and modern story of the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Reception Rooms, one of the top collections of American fine and decorative arts in existence.

Winner, NYC Big Book Award 2023, Fine Arts; Best Art Book, American Book Fest Award, 2023

The art of United States diplomacy has been conducted over more than two centuries with figures from all over the world, in peacetime and in conflict. For the last six decades, these negotiations have taken place in the rarified environment of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State. Elizabeth Meredith Dowling
ID: 14810
Издательство: Rizzoli

First published in 1989, this updated edition celebrates this seminal American architect.

Between 1912 and 1968, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because he was so prolific, the book examines only his most essential work, which as a body represents an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.

A graduate of Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed one year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize, travelling shortly thereafter to Rome. There he remained for five years, learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

On his return to the U.S., Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose master-piece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia, to design in the Classical and traditional styles some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

About the Author:

Elizabeth Meredith Dowling is an architect who long served as associate professor of architecture at Georgia Tech. In 2020 she received the ICAA Philip Trammell Shutze Lifetime Achievement Award, for her contributions to the fields of architecture, architectural history, and the teaching of design.
