Nora Murphy
ID: 17262
Издательство: Rizzoli

Following her success with Nora Murphy’s Country House Style, Murphy celebrates a selection of homes and their homeowners, each exemplifying a different style.

For Nora Murphy, a country house isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. A country house is warm, welcoming — at once down to earth, yet elegant. A country house has genuine character, tells a story, and is truly, wonderfully lived in. Here Murphy explores the tenets of country house style, as illustrated by her own “new” country house, and the many other striking homes she has curated for the book. Each one of these homeowners has embraced country house style — but each implements it in their own unique way. There is a pastoral 1732 center-chimney colonial in Connecticut nestled in spectacular gardens, a cozy cottage on the coast of Maine rich with local details, and an 1840s Greek Revival in the Hudson Valley filled with romantic Victorian ephemera. Common threads weave through the stories: the thrill of the antiques hunt, the role of history, and the priority of comfort.

Filled with practical ways to celebrate American country style, beautifully designed with a ribbon bookmark, and written in the author’s warm and effusive voice, this book will inspire readers to create a country house lifestyle wherever they live.

About the Author:

Nora Murphy’s lifestyle brand Nora Murphy Country House celebrates decorating, gardening, and entertaining, and is home to an award-winning blog; online magazine; the e-commerce site, Hunt Club; and the brick-and-mortar store, The Little Shop. Previously, Murphy was Executive Vice President of Style and Advertising at Ethan Allen. She is the author of Nora Murphy’s Country House Style.

A celebrated photographer focuses his lens on distinctive period and contemporary residences amid the natural beauty of New York’s Catskill Mountains and Hudson River Valley

The majestic panoramas, lush vegetation, and bucolic vibe of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River Valley in upstate New York have long proved irresistible for city dwellers seeking respite from urban life and inveterate country lovers alike. From acclaimed architect and designer Keith Summerour comes an alluring new book of carefully crafted dwellings that redefine the idea of home for today.

Protecting human beings has always been one of the most genuine purposes of architecture. Due to the increase in global warming in recent years, protection from the sun is becoming one of its most important functions. This challenge has resulted in numerous trendsetting technological innovations and amazing design concepts, which have been collected in this book. Shade is mainly created in three ways: while opaque constructions block off all light, perforated devices as well as translucent materials reduce the exposure to light.

Creating Shade presents all conceivable types and forms of shade-providing design made of a host of different materials such as wood, fabrics, concrete, and a great number of synthetic materials. The collection includes elegant pergolas, extravagant pavilions, and roofed piazzas, as well as a fascinating solution for a canopy over a Roman excavation site and the spectacular Metropol Parasol in Seville. Outstanding serial products are presented along with individually constructed creations.

Fyodor Savintsev

Издательство: Fuel

A ‘dacha’ is a country cottage, made of wood, used by Soviet citizens to escape the rigors of the city for rural idyll. Widespread in the countries of the former USSR, this important cultural and architectural form has been largely ignored academically. In Dacha, Fyodor Savintsev documents this particularly Russian phenomenon, his photographs constitute a unique record of a rapidly vanishing fairytale wooden world.

The word ‘dacha’ has been used to describe constructions ranging from grand imperial villas to small sheds. Originally bestowed by the Tsar to reward courtiers, this custom continued following the revolution, with Soviet cooperatives building dachas for their members. Supposedly for the benefit of labourers, in reality they were destined for those favoured by the State, including famous writers, architects and artists – from Pasternak to Prokofiev. The fall of the Soviet Union accelerated their use, as economic uncertainty forced city dwellers towards self-sufficiency. The dacha tradition has survived Revolution, war and the collapse of Communism, becoming an integral part of life in the process.

A collection of nine contemporary houses designed by one of the most influential and exciting architects of his generation

David Adjaye’s award-winning buildings and urban schemes have met with critical and popular acclaim around the world. Born in Tanzania to Ghanaian parents, David Adjaye enjoyed a wide-ranging education and opened his first office in London in 1994, making his name with a series of innovative houses for artists and creatives.

After twenty years of practice, houses now represent a smaller portion of Adjaye’s work but continue to play a significant role in his output and development as an architect. Here, nine outstanding examples in diverse settings on four continents – from a Victorian suburb in London, to the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a country park outside Nanjing, and a coastal landscape in Ghana – are presented in vivid detail. Each project engages sensitively with its location, pushes the boundaries of spatial invention and challenges received concepts of domestic space in the twenty-first century.

Adjaye’s artistry, his graceful compositions and unexpected materials, are explored in richly detailed photographs and drawings, which celebrate an architect at the height of his creative powers.

Ashley Hicks
ID: 6332
Издательство: Rizzoli

Back in print for the first time in years, this classic of interior-design history showcases the masterful work of David Hicks (1929–1998), who is acknowledged as one of the most important designers of the late twentieth century, in the company of Billy Baldwin and Albert Hadley.

Known for his bold use of color, eclecticism, and geometric designs in carpets and textiles, Hicks turned English decorating on its head in the 1950s and ’60s. His trademark use of electrifying color combinations, and mixing antiques, modern furniture, and abstract paintings became the “in style” for the chic of the day, including Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubinstein. By the 1970s, David Hicks was a brand; his company was making wallpaper, fabrics, and linens and had outposts in eight countries, including the United States where he worked with the young Mark Hampton, and where his wallpaper was used in the White House. “My greatest contribution as an interior designer has been to show people how to use bold color mixtures, how to use patterned carpets, how to light rooms, and how to mix old with new,” he stated in his 1968 work, David Hicks on Living — With Taste, the last authoritative book on his work. Written by his son, Ashley Hicks, with unprecedented access to Hicks’s archives, personal photographs, journals, and scrapbooks, this book is a vibrantly illustrated celebration of a half century of stunning interiors.

About the Author:

Ashley Hicks is a British author, architect, interior and furniture designer, and photographer. He is the son of Lady Pamela Hicks and the legendary decorator David Hicks.

The first monograph on the Danish architect and designer, whose approach combines his Scandinavian heritage with a modern design language.

David Thulstrup’s award-winning international and multi-disciplinary practice includes everything from residential architecture to interiors for restaurants, stores, and hotels, as well as designs for furniture and lighting.  More than 250 specially commissioned photographs, floor plans, architectural drawings, mood boards, process photographs, and four in-depth case studies, including his design for the interior and furniture for the new Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, illustrate more than 20 architectural and interiors projects, as well as 16 designs for furniture. This book traces Thulstrup’s life and influences from his childhood and education in Denmark, up to the present day, demonstrating his unique approach to design.

About the Authors:

Having gained extensive experience working for Jean Nouvel in Paris and Peter Marino in New York, David Thulstrup founded his own practice in 2009, grounded on enduring Scandinavian values of honesty and humanism with a particular emphasis on materiality. Describing his style as ‘modern simplicity’, Thulstrup creates pared-back designs that feel current but stand the test of time.

Sophie Lovell was born in London and studied Biology at Sussex University before going on to study Design at Chelsea College of Art & Design. She moved to her current home, Berlin, in 1994. Sophie has worked on and with numerous publications both digital and analogue in the fields of art, architecture and design. She is the former editor-in-chief of uncube magazine, for example, and the Germany Editor of Wallpaper* magazine from 2000 to 2022. She has written and edited a number of books on design and architecture, including Dieter Rams: As Little Design as Possible, and is also co-editor of The Common Table, a digital platform for food futures and systemic change that she founded together with her daughter Orlando Lovell as studio_lovell.
