KHA / Kerry Hill Architects: Works and Projects celebrates the buildings, resorts and spaces designed by the internationally renowned practice founded by the late Kerry Hill in Singapore in 1979.

KHA has grown through the decades from a small studio in Singapore, known for redefining boutique hotels and resorts in Asia, to an architectural practice that embraces a distinguished global portfolio of public buildings and private residences, while continuing to pioneer innovation in resorts and hotels throughout the world.

This comprehensive illustrated monograph captures KHA’s commitment to achieving authenticity and exactitude in its work. The buildings presented are highly sensitive to their settings, their relationship to the landscape and their cultural contexts. These values of place are also celebrated in their interior spaces, which are enriched by contemporary crafting and highly considered details.

KHA / Kerry Hill Architects: Works and Projects brings together a corpus of more than fifty completed works from 1992 to the present, with an emphasis on KHA’s recent projects. These include the trio of newly completed and celebrated Aman hotels in Japan, Amanyangyun, near Shanghai, and the recently completed Walyalup Civic Centre in Fremantle, Western Australia. Added to this are a range of new commissions currently being developed by the practice’s two studios, including two wineries – one in Western Australia and the other in Tasmania – and a remarkable design for a desert resort in Saudi Arabia.

About the Authors:

Geoffrey London is Emeritus Professor of Architecture at The University of Western Australia where he is a past Dean and Head of School. He is a Professorial Fellow at The University of Melbourne, an Adjunct Professor at Monash University, a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), a previous WA Chapter President of the AIA and an Honorary Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. He previously held the positions of Victorian Government Architect (2008–14) and Western Australian Government Architect (2004–08) and has written extensively on aspects of contemporary architectural practice.

KHA / Kerry Hill Architects was founded in 1979 by the late Kerry Hill AO. The practice, now based in two studios in Singapore and Fremantle, Australia, works in many countries throughout the world, and is highly regarded for the sensitivity and generosity of its approach to architectural and interior design.

Today, Kharkiv’s unfortunate geographical position on the eastern edge of Europe makes it a frequent target for the Russian army’s relentless shelling and airstrikes. Yet, not long ago, Ukraine’s second-largest city was a vibrant centre of student life, progressive art, intellectual thought, and techno-logical innovation, all spiced by the tough post-industrial identity of its citizens. Born from waves of migration, modernisation, industrialisation, and revolution, Kharkiv trod a stormy path from its origins as a Cossack military fortress to a period (1919–1934) when it was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. This decade and a half was a golden age, marked by a dramatic construction boom that turned Kharkiv into a legendary Modernist city.

In this publication, author Ievgeniia Gubkina takes the reader on a journey through the city’s history and architecture, from its Old Centre to its New Centre, home to Derzhprom, a Constructivist gem which was also the embodiment of a new model of social and economic relations. This architectural guide is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of freedom of Kharkiv’s citizens. But it is also an important act of remembering and resistance: in documenting the city’s buildings in words and photographs, even as many of them are, day after day, being destroyed by Russian bombs, it keeps them intact and alive in our minds as a model for the city’s future.

This title is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty on 24 February 2022.

About the Author:

Ievgeniia Gubkina, born 1985, architect, researcher and curator. Organised and held numerous conferences. Co-founder of the NGO Urban Forms Center. In 2013 she started the women’s avant-garde movement Modernistky. Her research interests include modernist architecture, urban planning and planned cities as well as the heritage of Socialist cities. Currently working on a PhD project on Soviet workers’ settlements in Ukraine in the 1920s and 1930s. Lives and works in Kharkiv.

About the Authors:

Stephen Kieran, FAIA, and James Timberlake, FAIA, formed their architectural practice in 1984. They both received the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome (1980 and 1982, respectively) and have taught at a number of schools, including Yale, Princeton, the University of Washington, and the University of Texas at Austin. For the past decade, they have taught a joint graduate research studio at the University of Pennsylvania. They are the inaugural recipients of the Benjamin Latrobe Fellowship for design research from the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows and have received over one hundred awards for design excellence, including the Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award.

Karl Wallick, AIA, is an assistant professor of architecture at The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. His courses focus on integrating technology and design through artful detailing. His research utilizes the tectonic fragment as both a constructive and narrative device to investigate topics related to building technics, detailing, and drawing.

Vita's own disinheritance from Knole prompted her dear friend Virginia Woolf to pen Orlando, furthering the place’s fame and glamorous luster.

Similarly, the architectural and decorative features of the house illustrate the different tastes of successive ages, from Thomas Sackville’s seventeenth-century makeover of a ramshackle medieval mansion to an early twentieth-century suite of rooms designed in the Bloomsbury style. Knole has never been illuminated in this way before.

Robert Sackville-West, 7th Baron Sackville, studied history at Oxford University and went on to work in publishing. He now chairs Knole Estates, the property and investment company that, in parallel with the National Trust, runs the Sackville family’s interests at Knole. Ashley Hicks is a British author, architect, interior and furniture designer, and photographer.

Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldout annotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images of the creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

Lauritz de Thurah (1706-1759) was one of the most important and influential Danish Baroque architects. As the first substantial monography on Thurah, this book gives a multifaceted view on his important role in 18th century Denmark by presenting him not only as an architect, but also as a garden architect, publicist, and an official in the Danish absolute monarchy.
