Patrick Mauriès, Marie Kalt
ID: 18118
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The first publication dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld's glamorous homes, known for their eclectic interiors, ranging from the Art Deco to the ultramodern

While Karl Lagerfeld was famous for being at the very centre of the fashion industry for over half a century, he was equally opinionated when it came to interiors, which acted as a private creative outlet alongside his fashion designs.

Following an overview by Patrick Mauriès, each house is introduced by a short text by Marie Kalt unveiling its history and identifying key designers and pieces. The homes are documented by date, beginning with rare photography of Lagerfeld’s early addresses in the 1960s and 1970s, through to his final house purchase in 2009. From the elegant Art-Deco inspired apartment in Saint-Sulpice, Paris, to the incredibly ornate 18th-century mansion, Hôtel Pozzo di Borgo (his muse and collaborator Amanda Harlech described Lagerfeld as having ‘a Versailles complex’) – Lagerfeld’s houses reveal he was a collector of a Renaissance scale, and showed spectacular range in his decorating styles. Lagerfeld would balance the old with the new, humorously describing the minimalist decor of his 200-year old apartment in Quai Voltaire, Paris as ‘like floating in your own spaceship over a very civilised past’, and moved from one atmosphere to the next, leaving a Memphis-designed apartment in Monte Carlo for a Grand-Tour themed Roman pied-à-terre, followed by bucolic French country houses and even a majestic Nordic villa in his native Hamburg.

Presented in a large, elegant format, Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Houses will be a rich source of inspiration for those interested in interior design, and will appeal to fans of the decorative arts and the fashion designer himself.

About the Author:

Patrick Mauriès is a writer and publisher of many notable titles on fashion and design, including Chanel CatwalkGoude: The Chanel SketchbooksFornasetti: Designer of Dreams and The World According to Karl. Marie Kalt is the former editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest France. The Moscow Metro is a unique place. With a network of 400 kilometers of lines, exceptionally deep tunnels and stations, and nearly nine million passengers a day, it is one of the most heavily frequented underground subway systems in the world. Katharina Gruzei explored it over several years and now presents an aesthetically fascinating and socioculturally remarkable photographic survey. Ideologically charged and symbolic of Russia's eventful history, the Metro was started as a prestige project and simultaneously conceived to also be used as a bunker. It was always intended as a place for people to congregate and is still today a living space where social, political and societal tendencies are made legible.

With her photo series, the artist enables an extraordinary journey through time and space in the underground of Moscow, a metropolis of millions.

About the Author:

Katharina Gruzei studied fine arts at the University of Art in Linz and the University of the Arts Berlin. She lives and works in Linz and Vienna as a freelance artist specializing in the media of photography, video, film, sound, and installation.

Text by Shahidha Bari and Federico Chiara and Pierre Léonforte and Renata Molho and Isa Tutino
ID: 15717
Издательство: Rizzoli

Known as the gardener of fashion, Ken Scott designed large-scale flowers that blossomed on fabrics and whole outfits and have recently been rediscovered in Gucci’s Epilogue collection.

The American fashion designer Ken Scott was a masterful creator of fabrics, mapping out flowers with romanticism and multiplying them as he transformed them into something that stood out and reflected his eclectic personality.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Scott moved to Milan in the 1950s, where he pioneered many colorful patterned fabrics and collections and founded the Falconetto brand. Known for bright floral patterns with peonies, roses, poppies, sunflowers, petunias, and asters, Scott followed a maximalist design philosophy when it came to his vibrant line. In the 1960s, he is said to have been one of the first designers to showcase calf-length skirts in his collection, while in 1970s he rose to fame because of his floral-printed suits for both men and women and unisex catwalks.

They called him “the fashion gardener,” but he was so many things: a gifted painter, an experimental restaurateur, an ingenious textile artist, and one of the most brilliant design savants of the twentieth century.

Edited together with the Ken Scott Foundation, including an interview with Alessandro Michele, this book provides an in-depth exploration of his archives and thoroughly reflects his imagination for everything from loungewear and luggage to silk scarves and swimsuits, all joyfully splashed with his colors, sunflowers, poppies, petunias, and peonies.

Author Botond Bognár and Balázs Bognár, Introduction by Kengo Kuma
ID: 16415
Издательство: Rizzoli

A detailed examination of the beautiful and sensitively realized addition to the famed Portland Japanese Garden by contemporary Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

Kengo Kuma: Portland Japanese Garden introduces the star Japanese architect's first public project in the United States. Kuma won the Portland Japanese Garden invitational competition by proposing a design that, while executed with contemporary materials and the latest construction technology, also builds on the principles of traditional architecture and craftsmanship. The resulting group of small buildings superbly blends with its magnificent natural environment and provides an outstanding example of Kuma's artistry of seamlessly connecting nature and architecture as well as past and present without falling into the trap of mimicry or sentimentality.

The book includes chapters on the reverence of nature and Japanese culture, on architecture and gardens in Japan, on the architecture of Kengo Kuma beyond the garden, and on craftsmanship and design, as well as on the new buildings and the garden itself, which is widely considered the most beautiful such garden outside Japan.

Author Robert Sackville-West, Photographs by Ashley Hicks
ID: 15228
Издательство: Rizzoli

The Sackvilles have inhabited Knole, one of Britain’s greatest houses, for more than four hundred years. Robert Sackville-West, the thirteenth generation of the family, takes the reader on a personal tour of this “calendar house,” with its legendary 365 rooms, fifty-two staircases, and seven courtyards.

Sumptuous photographs by designer Ashley Hicks — who recently photographed the interiors of Buckingham Palace—capture the smoldering spirit of Knole, from the state rooms, which house possibly the finest collection of royal Stuart furniture in the world, to the private apartments and gardens to the behind-the-scenes labyrinth of cellars and attics.

Knole provides a window into English history. The characters who populate the pages — the grave Elizabethan statesman, the good-for-nothing gadabout at the seedy court of James I, the dashing cavalier, the Restoration rake, the 3rd Duke of the ancien régime — are all representative of their eras (members of a family described by Vita Sackville-West as “a race too prodigal, too amorous, too weak, too indolent, and too melancholy”). Vita's own disinheritance from Knole prompted her dear friend Virginia Woolf to pen Orlando, furthering the place’s fame and glamorous luster.

Similarly, the architectural and decorative features of the house illustrate the different tastes of successive ages, from Thomas Sackville’s seventeenth-century makeover of a ramshackle medieval mansion to an early twentieth-century suite of rooms designed in the Bloomsbury style. Knole has never been illuminated in this way before.

About The Authors:

Robert Sackville-West, 7th Baron Sackville, studied history at Oxford University and went on to work in publishing. He now chairs Knole Estates, the property and investment company that, in parallel with the National Trust, runs the Sackville family’s interests at Knole. Ashley Hicks is a British author, architect, interior and furniture designer, and photographer.

Author Katia Lysy, Prologue by Benedetta Origo, Photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale
ID: 18300
Издательство: Rizzoli

Discover La Foce, the Renaissance villa and classically inspired twentieth-century garden, at the dawn of its hundredth anniversary — once a barren Tuscan estate brought to life through the extraordinary vision and determination of Iris and Antonio Origo.

In 1924, English-born biographer and writer Iris Origo (1902–1988) and her husband, Antonio, purchased La Foce, a sprawling estate centered around a half-ruined fifteenth-century villa with a dream that was as ambitious as it was audacious. Guided by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, the Origos dedicated their lives to transforming an impoverished terrain into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards. With English architect Cecil Pinsent, they refurbished the house and designed an elegant terraced garden with box hedges, a rose garden, fountains, and a wisteria-covered pergola.

The dramatic story of La Foce — from the taming of the wild valley and personal loss to wartime strife — is told by the Origos’ granddaughter Katia Lysy, with reminiscences by Benedetta Origo, the couple’s elder daughter. The letters and diaries of Iris Origo weave beautifully into a personal narrative of the creation of the property and the people behind it. Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldout annotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images of the creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

About the Authors:

Katia Lysy is a journalist and a literary translator. She now assists her mother, Benedetta Origo, in the management and development of the family estate of La Foce. Benedetta Origo is the daughter of Iris and Antonio Origo and the owner of La Foce. Simon Upton is one of the foremost names in interiors photography, with more than twenty-five years of published work to his credit. Matteo Carassale is an Italian photographer who has contributed work to international travel, interior, garden, and nature magazines.
