Written by Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer, Text by Jamie Brisick, Foreword by Ben Stiller
ID: 9308
Издательство: Rizzoli

For their tenth anniversary, the design studio Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors presents projects that blend the spirit of our collective history with a modernist edge.

Roman and Williams’s style honors craftsmanship, the use of natural materials, and the overlooked in unexpected ways. Their understated, glamorous sensibility is imparted in Manhattan’s Ace Hotel interiors and restaurant The Breslin, The Standard Hotel, with its iconic Boom Boom Room, and the Royalton lobby. For such popular restaurants as The Dutch, the duo created environments with textured backdrops that reference a rich past with a contemporary sensibility.

Their innovative work has captured the attention of firms such as Facebook — they recently completed its campus food hall — and their residences for celebrities such as Ben Stiller and Gwyneth Paltrow are equally imaginative. This book surveys the firm’s prestige projects, presented with Alesch’s architectural hand drawings and sketches and detailed views.

Also included is their loft and Montauk home, which serve as design laboratories, and a collection of furnishings and fixtures.

About еhe Authors:

Following a career as Hollywood production designers, Stephen Alesch and Robin Standefer founded Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors in 2002. The New York firm’s scope includes buildings, interior design, and product lines, where they place a premium on such aesthetic juxtapositions as high/low and spare/baroque. Former Surfing magazine editor Jamie Brisick writes for the New York Times and Details and has authored two books, including Have Board Will Travel. Actor and film director/producer Ben Stiller is a prolific talent. Standefer and Alesch did the production design for Zoolander and Duplex and designed his homes.

Ashley Hicks, Foreword by Christian Louboutin
ID: 16099
Издательство: Rizzoli

Inspirational and visually on trend, Ashley Hicks's latest work is a pattern book for the twenty-first century. Offering insights and revelations, Hicks's own exquisitely quirky and colorful historicist interiors are discussed with designs from the recent and faraway past.

Ashley Hicks has created a mix of manifesto, souvenir album, and confession in this collection of noteworthy rooms--featuring his own one-of-a-kind interiors along with rooms that have inspired him. The manifesto aspect is rather limited, since Hicks is not a great believer in aesthetic rules or the value of so-called good taste, but as a souvenir album, it charts Hicks's personal creative journey of the last few years, illustrated with photographs of some favorite historical interiors and objects that represent a mixture of source material and inspiration.

The book's twelve chapters reveal Hicks's creative process, how he approaches different themes in his own interiors, furniture designs, and works of art, and how these themes can be applied to the works of others. Such subjects as flowers, color, layers, form, pattern, and memory are presented in the context of actual projects. Historical and recent interiors are discussed for their decorative value--notable rooms and architecture include the Pantheon in Rome; Emperor Maximilian's tomb in Innsbruck; the Royal Pavilion, Brighton; and the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Hicks has created a book for devotees of decorating and the history of interior design.

About the Author:

Ashley Hicks is a British author, architect, interior and furniture designer, and photographer. He is the son of Lady Pamela Hicks and the legendary decorator David Hicks. His personal Instagram profile has amassed over 200,000 followers. Christian Louboutin is a celebrated French shoe designer.

Jeffrey Simpson, Sarah Cumming Cecil
ID: 9123
Издательство: Rizzoli

Rose Cumming was the most flamboyant and exciting of the so-called Great Lady Decorators who invented the field of professional decorating and interior design in the early twentieth century. Flavored by surrealism and suffused with drama, her interiors were sumptuous, mixing bold colors and patterns. Her own library had emerald-green walls, a peacock -blue satin sofa, and scarlet japanned chairs.

Cumming’s famous New York decorating and antiques shop became a stopping point for celebrated personalities such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Andy Warhol, Rudolf Nureyev, and Jacqueline Onassis. Encompassing styles from gothic, Venetian, and Austrian baroque to early Oriental furniture, Cumming would add glittering chandeliers, birdcages, and fine carpets. Her glamorous style was reminiscent of film sets, and Marlene Dietrich and Norma Shearer were among her clients.

This book, the first on Cumming, is a richly illustrated volume of a great American artist, whose influence is manifest in the ongoing production of Cumming-designed fabrics and wallpapers. Rose Cumming will inspire the interior designer and home decorator, both professional and amateur alike.

About the Authors:

Jeffrey Simpson is an author and editor. For three decades, he served as contributing editor and writer for Architectural DigestSarah Cumming Cecil is president and principal at the Rose Cumming interior design firm and continues the design tradition established by its eponymous founder.

ID: 14416
Издательство: Rizzoli

A privileged chance to see Rose Uniacke’s work in the form of a private tour of her London home — the crucible for all her design ideas — in her first book, produced as a limited edition of 2,500 copies.

Airy and light, delicate and robust, grand and intimate, raw and luxurious: these are just some of the qualities and contradictions that resonate within the work and home of Rose Uniacke. This sumptuous volume, the first on the designer, has been conceived with Uniacke to her bespoke specifications.

Masterfully photographed by François Halard, the book unfolds gatefold after gatefold as a series of privileged glimpses inside Uniacke’s home, with the designer’s own words as our guide — an intimate and exclusive portrait of a home rarely gained access to as well as a window onto the workings of one of our leading design minds.

Her work is distinguished by warmth, character, and an extraordinary serenity, and mirroring these qualities the book is a luxury object made from some of the same materials featured in Uniacke’s home: a unique cotton duck canvas slipcase houses the book itself, which is wrapped in pure new wool. Completing this indispensable book in design history are texts from the architect of Uniacke’s home, Vincent Van Duysen, and her landscape architect, Tom Stuart-Smith.

Pamela Smart and Stephen Fox, Foreword by Christopher Rothko, Introduction by David Leslie
ID: 16326
Издательство: Rizzoli

A first look at the recently restored Rothko Chapel, a world-renowned destination for spiritual renewal, with all-new photography and scholarship of the renovated building and campus, published on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

The Rothko Chapel -- home to 14 monumental modernist paintings by the pioneer Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko--is an interfaith sacred space dedicated to global human rights, art, and spirituality, located in Houston. The Chapel was founded in 1971 by arts patrons and philanthropists Dominique and John de Menil, who placed their utmost faith in Rothko's vision to express the profound, the miraculous, and regard for the sanctity of the human spirit in this oasis for the intellect and the spirit.

Through photographic testimony and the insights of scholars, this large-format volume gives an intimate look at this sacred space, where visitors seek solace and inspiration within this truly ecumenical sanctuary featuring Rothko's iconic paintings. Pamela Smart discusses the spiritual side and Stephen Fox puts the architecture in the context of Houston.

The Chapel has been reworked within an expanded campus to enhance the experience for its many visitors. As viewers sit in stillness or move about the Chapel's serene octagonal enclosure, the reinstalled skylight better reveals the nuances of Rothko's powerful panels and allows for better connection to the outdoors as conditions shift, such as when clouds pass above.

About the Author:

Pamela Smart is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Art History at Binghamton University. Stephen Fox is an architectural historian and a Fellow of the Anchorage Foundation of Texas. Christopher Rothko is the second of Mark and Mary Alice Rothko's two children. Russian Textiles showcases the gorgeous printed-cotton textiles created and manufactured in Russia and exported to Central Asia from approximately 1860 to 1960. More than 175 spectacular patterns spanning a variety of periods and styles, from Art Nouveau florals to Soviet-era agitprop, are featured. The people in these Central Asian countries - including Uzbeks, Tadjiks, and Turkmen - incorporated the brightly patterned material into their clothing, particularly their robes, and in their household items.

Brief essays by the author and fellow textile experts describe the “social life” of the fabrics and the fascinating history of this merging of Russian, Western, and Central Asian aesthetic styles; Robert Kushner contributes a lively text on how an artist “sees” and is inspired by these designs. Complementing the pattern images are vintage photographs from the turn of the 20th century as well as beautifully detailed reproductions of the robes and other articles that were lined and embellished with these cloths

First survey of modernist and contemporary architecture and interiors in the richly layered architectural history of Santa Fe

Santa Fe Modern reveals the high desert landscape as an ideal setting for bold, abstracted forms of modernist houses. Wide swaths of glass, deep-set portals, long porches, and courtyards allow vistas, color, and light to become integral parts of the very being of a house, emboldening a way to experience a personal connection to the desert landscape. The architects featured draw from the New Mexican architectural heritage–they use ancient materials such as adobe in combination with steel and glass, and they apply this language to the proportions and demands exacted by today’s world. The houses they have designed are confident examples of architecture that is particular to the New Mexico landscape and climate, and yet simultaneously evoke the rigorous expressions of modernism. The vigor and the allure of modern art and architecture hearten each other in a way that is visible and exciting, and this book demonstrates the synergistic relationship between art, architecture, and the land.
