In 2012 at the latest, when a Chinese architect received the prestigious Pritzker Prize for the first time ever, the professional community started noticing and realizing that contemporary Chinese building culture is among the most innovative and adventurous found anywhere today. It is truly amazing how the technically most daring designs can be implemented within the shortest possible time. At the same time, Chinese architects mediate between modernity and architectural tradition and turn to regional typologies to rediscover traditional craft techniques.

This volume features a wide range of typologies, styles, sizes, and locations that have one thing in common — their designers hail from China and have made the world of architecture stop and take notice of their work.

Design reduced to the absolute essential – the shipping container. Invented in the 1950s by Malcom McLean, these plain steel boxes with corrugated profiles revolutionized the worldwide trade sector. These huge receptacles for storing and transporting cargo have found their way into architecture to become an essential part of global building culture.

Ever more astonishing architectural applications and design experiments are based on these standardized, strictly geometrically conceived units. Their imaginatively designed shells are just as versatile as their use: sometimes with original, rough surfaces with traces of use that tell a story, sometimes with a curtain facade made of wood and large-scale glazing, or even as a purist composition with a sophisticated light installation. In an ever-changing world with its hybrid forms of living and working, this book presents a collection of remarkable container buildings.

Discover the stories of some of the most breathaking and historic great houses of London, along with their secrets, in this lavishly illustrated compedium.

London has a wealth of truly stunning great houses, seen by many as one of the marvels of English architecture, and yet to many their histories, their interiors and their occupants remain unknown.

This book, illustrated throughout with sumptuous photography of these breathaking residences, reveals to us this secret world of riches and splendour.

From the baroque and imposing magnificence of 10 Downing Street, perhaps London's most famous address, to the extraordinary Pre-Raphaelite mosaics of Debenham House to the confident, futuristic steel and glass of the Richard Rogers House in Chelsea, this book showcases these properties and details their origin as well as the many transformations they have undergone from their construction to the present day.

There are many architectural wonders, among them Robert Adam's 20 St James’s Square and William Burges’s Tower House. Several — including Bridgewater House with its Raphaels and Titians — have held great art collections.

These are houses that hold extraordinary stories: half the Cabinet resigned after breakfast at Stratford House; and on 4 August 1914, at 9 Carlton House Terrace — then the German Embassy — young duty clerk Harold Nicholson deftly substituted one declaration of war for another.

With photography by the world-famous and multi-award winning Fritz von der Schulenburg, this title brings these houses to life in all their grandeur, and text from historian and author James Stourton delves into the many fascinating stories hidden behind the walls of these homes.

Great Houses of London opens the door to some of the greatest and grandest houses in the world to tell the stories of their owners and occupants, artists and architects, their restoration, adaptation and change.

Now available in a more compact format.

About the Author:

James Stourton is Chairman of Sotheby's UK. He writes regularly for The Times, the Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Spectator and Apollo. Previous books include Great Smaller Museums of Europe (2003) and Great Collectors of Our Time (2007).

A compact edition of this landmark publication, which celebrates humanity’s ability to create buildings that for millennia have responded ingeniously to cultural and environmental conditions

There has never been a more important time to understand how to make the best use of local natural resources and create buildings that do not rely on stripping our planet or transporting materials across the globe. First published in 2017, this major book gathers together the world’s leading experts on vernacular architecture to examine how local buildings have stood the test of time and offer lessons for the future.

The core of the book is arranged by climate zone, from desert to tropical, temperate to arctic. Within each section, buildings are presented regionally, showing how climatic conditions and vegetation affect the evolution of building styles. This central part is bookended by a range of essays exploring the economic and anthropological aspects, while the reference section offers information on materials science and engineering, including how buildings have been adapted to contend with natural disasters.

The traditions of vernacular architecture have much to teach us. Given our ecosystem’s increasing frailty, the architecture and building trade’s new role in a post-digital era, and the desperate need to record fading cultural traditions, the relevance of this book is greater than ever.

A landmark publication that celebrates humanity’s age-old ability to create buildings that are ingeniously adapted to their cultural and environmental conditions, providing enduring lessons for living today

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing our planet. There has never been a more important time to understand how to make the best use of local natural resources and to produce buildings that do not rely on stripping the environment or transporting materials across the globe.

The culmination of years of specialist research, this once-in-a-generation publication gathers together an international team of over one hundred leading experts across a diverse range of disciplines to examine what the traditions of vernacular architecture and its regional craftspeople around the world can teach us about creating a more sustainable future. Organized by the five major climate zones, covering polar, temperate, tropical, desert and continental, and more than 80 countries worldwide, it reveals how people and cultures have adapted to their environment to make the best use of indigenous materials and construction techniques, and stresses the importance of preserving disappearing craftsmanship and local knowledge before it is too late.

Including contextual essays on issues ranging from climatology, to anthropology and economics; detailed reference section; specially commissioned maps and infographics; and a wealth of illustrations, this landmark publication is a celebration of humankind's resilience and ingenuity in a rapidly changing world, and an invaluable resource document for the future generation who will shape our built environment.

The most complete overview of interior design ever, featuring the 100 interior designers everybody must know, and how they changed decorating forever

Most decorating books focus on one designer; the rest focus on one period, one trend, one room. This book, for the first time, has the big picture: ALL the names everybody must know from the entire 100-year history of interior design. Each designer is profiled and illustrated with three to four photographs of their best work; what we can learn from them — and how they changed decorating forever — is clearly highlighted to catch the eye.

Any list of 100 interior designers is personal. Agree or disagree. Love it or challenge it. But Inspired Design is the starting point for everybody who loved interior design -- and the one book every design library must have.

About the Author:

Jennifer Boles was one of the first bloggers on the design scene, in 2008, with The Peak of Chic. She has won the “Best Writing on a Design Blog” award at the Design Bloggers Hall of Fame in Los Angeles, and been profiled in the New York TimesElle Décor, and Town & Country, among other publications. Boles frequently lectures at design centers, museums, and show houses around the country. In a 2013 article about Ms. Boles in the New York Times, Stephen Drucker observed, “Jennifer isn’t the usual facile love-love-love decorating blogger.” Mr. Drucker then added, “She’s a serious student of decorating history. Her head is filled with photos of rooms, and she sees patterns among them that no one else sees. She’s like Claire Danes in ‘Homeland,’ but for living rooms.”
